Michele Bachmann Leads Iowa Polls, Republican Rivals Take Aim

Your big 2012 election news of the day comes out of Iowa, where a poll conducted by TheIowaRepublican.com has placed Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann at the top of the pack. This poll, of "likely Iowa caucusgoers," found 25 percent of respondents favoring Bachmann's bid, with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in second place, with 21 percent.

According to the report:

While Bachmann's lead over Romney is just within the margin of error, the poll's cross tabs show how much momentum her campaign has generated in Iowa. Her favorability is ten points higher than Romney's, who had the second highest number in that category. Her unfavorable figure is 14 points lower than Romney's, giving her a stellar plus 65 favorability margin. Her numbers suggest that Bachmann has found a very effective way to appeal to caucus goers.

Now, none of these results are particularly surprising, given the fact that Bachmann has gone out of her way to play up her connections to Iowa and Romney has gone of his way to...well, do everything short of ignoring Iowa entirely. Bachmann's pitched herself to all the right constituents, and has aligned herself with influential Iowa conservatives -- she was the first to sign Bob Vander Plaats' "Marriage Vow," inking her name on the pledge before its sponsor organization, The Family Leader, altered the pledge to remove an odd reference to slavery. It's also very likely that between now and the Iowa caucuses, Bachmann will avail herself of the organizing power of her close friend, Iowa Representative Steve King.

Aside from Bachmann and Romney, the most significant shifts signaled by this poll involve Tim Pawlenty and Ron Paul. Pawlenty's third place finish (he edged out Herman Cain by a few tenths of a point), is a lifeline to a campaign that was circling the drain last week. Pawlenty can take solace in the fact that after Bachmann, he is the candidate with "the next highest favorable/unfavorable spread." Pawlenty spent last week sending mixed messages on how hard he was going to compete in Iowa, alternating between downplaying the state's importance and suggesting that he'd only just begun to compete in the state "in earnest."

On Meet The Press this Sunday, he played up the latter position. This mini-surge will bolster his efforts. However, conventional wisdom dictates that he'll need to show real strength in the Ames Straw Poll just to get his ticket punched to next year's caucus. Ron Paul has also heavily invested in winning the Ames Straw Poll, and he's outraised Pawlenty at just the right time. But mired at six percent, he'll need a successful showing in the Straw Poll to just demonstrate that his candidacy has broadened its appeal beyond his dedicated fanbase. The singular thesis behind Paul's candidacy is that the rest of the country has moved toward the positions he's spent his career espousing. Ames will be a critical test of his theory.

Naturally, Bachmann's now facing incoming fire from the direction of Pawlenty's and Paul's respective camps. As Alexander Burns reports, Pawlenty was critical of Bachmann's record on this morning's Fox And Friends.

"With all due respect, she just doesn't have that kind of experience," he said. "And secondly, her record in Congress, as I mentioned before, is, you know, again, great remarks and great speeches, but in terms of results and accomplishments, nonexistent."

And Alex Pareene reports that Paul's inimitable fanbase is organizing against Bachmann by going after her pre-political career as an IRS "tax collector":

The tax collector business has been brought up on the Ron Paul forums by Paul-supporters who are clearly irked that the "Tea Party" candidates like Bachmann (and former Fed employee Herman Cain) are stealing grassroots attention from their preferred insurgent candidate. ("Bachmann was a tax prosecutor for the IRS - I can't think of any professional less desirable to the tea party.")

At the Paul-supporting "Economic Policy Journal," Robert Wenzel writes:

"But, there is a clear difference between Ron Paul and Michelle Bachmann. While Dr. Paul early in his career practiced medicine and delivered thousands of babies, Michele Bachmann was a tax lawyer for the IRS and has a post-doctorate degree in Federal Tax Law. She has stated that she represented the IRS in hundreds of cases against American citizens."

That is a clear difference! (The comments on that post are also priceless. "IRS/Federal Reserve: Two NWO people right from the bowels from hell.")

Perhaps the saddest news in this poll is reserved for Rick Santorum, who garners just two percent despite having made Iowa his second home. As we've noted before: conservatives really like him, they just don't want him to be President.

Ask Bachmann anything..."Ma'am, your toilet is backed up, how do you think that happened". Answer: "My toilet was fine before President Obama took office". She does nothing but attack Obama. Romney threw in his two sense after just returning from a trip of pandering hedge funds in London for cash.

Romney is now under investigation by the FEC and DOJ...

On the matter of black children being raised by 2 parents in 1860 and only one or none in 2008 and beyond its stupid to assume that Blacks were better off as slaves. No they weren't. What happened after emancipation was inequity and biasness which still prevail today. One can see prisons where a strong population of blacks and latinos vs whites begs to question of justice. Poverty, poor education, even poorer health impact minorities because we are still inbalanced as a society. Until that inequity is addressed these problems will remain with us like a blight.

If I were Obama I would be kicking in a lot of dough to her campaign. That money would be well spent. If she got the nomination I would sign up for cable TV again just to watch the debates. And to relax knowing Obama was going to win easily. Except in the South.

No one cares about Iowa. Huckabee won it last year and lost the election. Not to mention this ridiculous Marriage Pledge. Vomit

And here all of this time my hope was that Sarah Palin would be my true love this election season. Now it turns out that Ms. Bachmann is the conservative's darling and has an outside shot at disrupting the coronation of Mitt Romney. We all know that the conservatives loathe Mitt, not least of all because many don't consider Mormonism to be a true Christian religion. But that bit of sober reasoning pales when held up to the larger mirror of mainstream Republican dogma: discrimination against gays and lesbians, denial of a women's right to choose what she does with her body, destruction of the public schools (or any public system in my humble opinion), and a willingness to bring down the economy on the alter of false fiscal morality.

Wow, that was a mouth full of spittle. The Republican positives to your accusations are: "Protecting Marriage" and the definition thereof. I am a Republican and do not care if a state recognizes "civil unions" but they should not gain every right that a heterosexual couple have (yes I am a bigot because I discriminate, but nature discriminates already, gays can't reproduce naturally). Either way I am not a fan of the federal marriage protection legislation because marriage is ordained by God not the government. I am a fan of protecting a human life that cannot protect itself (including babies in the womb). The removal of federal government from schools and placing them back in the hands of states and local communities instead of Washington bureaucrats... and cutting the deficit responsibly by cutting spending not increasing taxes which will only hurt the economy more.
So, to point the gun back at you would be "The democrat position is keep spending and increase the budget, generating more debt. Take more money out of the economy (taxes) and give more control to the federal government who promises more false security to citizens. A federal government that continues to invade other countries without declaring war (both Republican and Democrat Position currently). Use tax payer dollars to fund abortions and schooling without freedom to choose which schools". So, how does the barrel of the gun look from that side?

Yessssssssss! If the Christian concervatives don't consider Romney a true christian I would need to look into Mormonism a bit more. They help the poor, believe in education, and leave peple to decide for themselves what to do with their lives. They force their religion on no one. Nor beleive that the Mormon church should dictate to Government what it should and should not do with the morals of others. Live and let live. Perhaps the concervative right is more like pharisees then christians. Vote the taliban out.

Why do we still let one midwest state that does not really represent the avg American have so much leverage on the election There are 49 more states still??? A couple of years ago when Fl tried to go first they were denied having representation at the national caucus.. Sounds like a different type of geryymandering to me ..another election snafu that should be changed..why not have 5 or 10 primaries on day 1..make any one of them less important over theother that way

If more people were just aware enough that this is the case it would lessen their influence. But that would necessitate either more spending on education or people actually taking the initiative to learn how things work. Neither are likely.

The nations that have the best education for its children are the nations that don't get into it. Its been my experience that education is best done in the hands of professionalism and highly qualified teachers that are paid well. The teachers are very vigorously trained so well that companies want to hire them in their businesses because of their credentials. They are respected members of their communities and the top 3 percent of graduates from colleges. Do we esteem education and educators in that light? No. We don't even esteem kids having the right to such.

THe only way the mess in the USA will ever get fixed is to eliminate the 2 party system. It is no longer a system of checks and blances, it is now the cause of a total stalemate where no matter how good the other party's idea is, it is rejected soley because it is from the "opposing" party..
Eliminate the parties now, let people run for office based on their views, abilities, ideas and constituents/Americans needs. Some will be connservative, liberal and in the middle and together they will run the government and accomplish things, no more finger pointing and doing nothing..
Also, when a US Senator or Congress person comes out publicly and says he/she will do everythign thye can to see the presidentt fails , that in my opinion is TREASON, and should be treated as such in court

We need to eliminate parties altogether period. We can see that it has always been a problem of not getting stuff done when it should because of party platforms and agenda's. Nations that practice this sort of politics ends up dead sooner or later. We see it all the time. When will America wise up and see that sword of Democleas hangs over our head as well.

ABC news has been running a story about DR Bachmanns (Michelles husband) clinic that tried to make gay people straight thru religion and the bible and jesus...now the place is shut down and the website gone..They are going to look into if he had billed Medicare/medicaid for these bogus "treatments"...Also..I think Dr Bachmann is also gay. and thats ok in itself but it seems like he is the self hating type who end up being the most outspoken anti gay and then get caught in a bathroom somewhere? So how do you all fell about a gay "first husband" imagine the White Hosue parties than.....

He is Gay but he plays a straight game. Using religion as a base to keep himself within the "fold" Its not uncommon for people to have self loathing issues of others that don't "control" their impulses. Ever hear of a dry drunk. They hate on other drinkers because they themselves have a weakness that the other exploits without impunity. This is a destructive cycle. He has not made peace with himself on his own matters so he tries to "convert" other homosexuals. So I don't expect him to have wild man parties at the white house since he is playing a straight card. But he is disturbingly overeaching his credentials to use religion as a pass for his Medical practice.

I see here that people are still trying to put the blame of the mess we're in on Bush, people have short memories. The debt went up how many points after the bail outs and the bribery checks that went out out. I returned mine in little bitty pieces I don't take bribes. Worked hard for my money and I don't like it when some fuzz butt in the WH thinks he knows what's best, excuse me Mr. fuzz butt, but I want what is owed to me

This mess has been going on for longer then Bush has been in office. I call it systemic failure. The entire political system is responsible for the mess we are in. Bush's issues have only been repeated over and over again since the first world war. And on the note of those that think they know whats best for you. GOP and Tea parties know how much you should earn, when you can retire, who you should marry, what you should do with your bodies, How high your medical expenses will be, what gas you will use. and wether or not you can afford college. Your future is very fuzzy.

If it wasn't so pitiable it would be totally laughable to think, much less have everyone believe, that a bunch of Bible-thumping cornhuskers from Iowa are capable of selecting the next candidate for the Presidency of the United States, when in actuality those decisions are made by one of three or four power elites who actually run the whole country. There's the auto industry, the financial sector, the power generators and the military-indutrial complex who actually control every segment of our lives. If you don't believe me, just ask anyone.

Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease let Bachman win the Iowa primary and move on to become the Republican candidate. Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease let her choose Palin as her running mate. This slate will be a donneybrook and lose every state. Maybe, just maybe, the once grand old party can extract the fundies' talons and become the party it once was: fiscal responsiblity and social tolerance.

Oh you are so right!! Please, convince all of your brethren that is true.. we are really frightened about Bachmann destroying Obama easily... really. She really has a handle on the whole President thing, and will be right out there making her case for what a GREAT leader she will be.... right after she discusses it with her husband to make sure he is alright with it... because, as you know... real leaders are submissive to their spouse (oh, that's right, it is only the FEMALES that have to be submissive) What a great qualification THAT makes for a president!
