TECHLAND:

Google's social networking Facebook rival test-launched not quite two weeks ago, and it's already suffering growing pains. In fact Google+'s storage well apparently ran dry this weekend, prompting the service to spam users with a sudden fusillade of error messages.

Google+ = the Balkanization of social networking as users will now effortlessly have the ability to choose, migrate, and place friends, contacts, and acquaintances into selective cliques without them having any idea as to their place in the pecking order. Facebook may have met it's match as a reboot of social networking takes hold. Personally as one who has lived through Friendster, MySpace, Wave, Buzz, Facebook, etc., it's time for a change. No doubt this move by Google will force Facebook to go public.

I got a Google+ invite. Setting it up is not intuitive. I don't get the circles. Hardly anyone I know is on it. My account will likely sit dormant. I don't get why they are being so stingy with invites. In a few months it will go the way of Google Buzz.

I didn't get any error spam. I'm one of those weirdos who never joined Facebook, but I'm liking Google+ a lot. Most of my friends are on, and the Circles concept works really well for keeping my college friends, newer friends, family, workplace, and professional network all neatly separated. I did a Hangout last weekend, and I think that will become quite useful one we all get used to it.

The same thing happened to the Spirit rover on Mars a few years ago... its hard disk got full and instead of getting pictures, NASA was just getting error messages sent back from Mars. Luckily, they figured out the bug in the Mars rover software, and used a satellite orbiting Mars to beam the new firmware to the rover as a BIOS update, a safety mechanism that had been built into the Mars rovers just in case their software had any bugs that weren't discovered until after they landed on Mars. Anyway, if NASA can clean up a hard drive on a robot on Mars, Google can make sure they have enough disk space here on Earth. It's not rocket science!
