PHOTOS: Paddle Board Yoga The Latest Trend

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/11/11 12:53 PM ET   Updated: 09/10/11 06:12 AM ET

Following Bikram Yoga, Hot Yoga and restorative yoga, there's a new yoga style in town, and it lives on a paddle board. Meet paddle board yoga -- a yoga practice that is carried out on paddle boards in the water. A combination of surfing and yoga, if you will, paddle board yoga is known for giving the body a "core" workout because of the added challenge of having to maintain one's balance while performing yoga poses. Flip through this slideshow to find out more:

Sarah Castrellon, Guillermo Pineda, Andrea Blachly and Adelaiea Loukota during a paddleboard yoga session at Adventure Sports Miami in Miami, Florida. The paddle board is said to give the body's core more of a workout than in a gym since the platform is unstable and one must use the muscles to remain balanced on the board.

Why not just do it one the side walk or the top of a bridge? This is lame.

I'm teaching SUP Yoga in Los Gatos, CA. Have found that there is just as much neuromuscular training as there is "core." This is THE MOST FUN I have had playing Yoga! Come and play Floating Lotus in Lake Vasona Through Breathe Los Gatos Yoga studio.

okay I tried paddle boarding the other day...NOT as easy as it looks. And I'm a average surfer, skateboarder and all around yogi...I know that board looks big and it is...BUT you have to be straight up the middle even...for these people to get off yoga poses is really impressive...heck I went into the drink after putting one toe on that thing...BUT I enjoyed it once I got the hang of it...not sure if I'll get to that next level and do yoga...

I know right, I'm the same. I surf and do yoga and I was thinking wow this would be cool and tougher than people think. But I will say years ago... those big round exercise balls, I had a friend who could stand up on them and do squats.

I was like how in the world can he do that. I tried and seriousy ate S#$%^&*$%^ several times. You fall hard trying, that ball rockets out from under you and WHAM. After a few hard falls, I was like I'm NOT trying that again. Then like weeks later I saw the ball and just felt like I could do it. And I did it.

Now I can bust out squats on that ball no problem, even if I haven't done it for weeks or months its just like riding a bike. So I'm sure with some practice and mental focus Paddleboard Yoga will be doable too.

So falling off a paddle board into the water doing Yoga I think would hurt less than falling off an exercise ball. I'm sure people fall everyday... I wonder though if one person falls does it break the concentration of others and then it's like a Domino Effect, haha... and many splash down.

Falling kind of makes it fun and more of a challenge to try and NOT get dunked.
