A couple of years ago a national newspaper was giving away free books. It wasn't my newspaper of choice but, you know - free books. So I would always have a glance in the newsagent to see what the current offer was. One week it was Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

I just read a library book that had a neat little round burn hole on one page.
Not exactly tattered, but it did make me stop reading long enough to giggle and wonder.....

This article reminded me of the quote from Margery Williams' The Velveteen Rabbit. The rabbit asks "what is real?" And the Skin Horse says, "Real isn't how you are made. It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."
