On Monday evening, police officers say that they saw a man firing a gun in the air in a vacant lot in the West Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago's South Side.
They gave chase as the man ran into his home on the 6200 block of South Vernon Avenue. As he was being chased, the man, who would later be identified as Jonrynn Avery, ran head-on into a glass door in his home, according to FOX Chicago.
He suffered multiple cut wounds from the broken glass, the Associated Press reports, which ultimately took his life. He was pronounced dead at 9:09 p.m. Monday night.
Avery, 24, was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office early Tuesday morning. According to the Chicago Tribune, the case was being handled on Tuesday as a death investigation, and not as a homicide.
