Does Lil Wayne Have The Worst Celebrity Twitter Account? A HuffPost Culture Review

Lil Wayne

First Posted: 07/12/11 05:19 PM ET Updated: 09/11/11 06:12 AM ET

Is it really even a question anymore? Is anyone less deserving of about 2.4 million followers than Lil Wayne (lesser-known as @LilTunechi)? Perhaps more importantly, when it comes to Twitter, can he do no wrong?

It pains this writer to indict him (really, we held a pre-prison goodbye party for the rapper in our college apartment), especially since Lil Wayne may be one of the most interesting people currently making music (more on that here). But the time has come to name the worst celeb Twitter user of all time.

The timing of his arrival to the land of bit-poetry and Kim Kardashian gaffes couldn't have been better. Joining a mere week before heading to Rikers for the prison stint that had fans printing "Free Weezy" t-shirts, he exploded in popularity. But after thousands of followers became hundreds of thousands up into the millions, this is (essentially) all he produced:

Oakland was one of the best shows yet! Ok Canada let's git it.less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet Reply

Dallas was better than ever!

Indiana was the best yet!

Orlando was the best hands down!

Miami was awesome!
And s/o to the Fighting Irish for playing their hearts out.
Way to go wifey!less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet Reply

(Perhaps the most interesting to ever come out of Wayne's timeline was this brief but seemingly passionate obsession with Skylar Diggins, a member of Notre Dame's Lady Irish basketball team. But even this bit of intrigue proved to be a short-lived fling.)

Consider the fact that millions of people read this stuff. Millions of people continue to tolerate a list of probably sold-out tour dates with a generic compliment for each city. Then consider the fact that each of the tweets listed above was re-tweeted well over one hundred times. This is worse than DJ's retweeting people saying they're "killing it" at some Vegas pool party. This is worse than Diddy's (Swag's?) ceaseless positivity.

Aside from his incessant self-congratulating and bugling, there's another disappointing revelation Wayne's Twitter gave us: He's a horrible bandwagon fan.

First there was the Kobe Bryant song. Then "Green and Yellow," his Wiz Khalifa-remix ode to the Green Bay Packers who were headed to superbowl victory. Then there was the shoutout to Mark Cuban and the photos of him partying with the Dallas Mavericks after they won the championship.

For someone who reps New Orleans so much (the man has a Saints icon tattooed on his face), he really has a hard time resisting a winner.

The problem with Wayne's account is that you can't really unfollow it, because it's Lil Wayne! He could say something crazy any minute! There are, to be fair, the occasional shockers. Like this one, which fell out of nowhere: "Never knew falling kud [sic] feel so good." Neither did we Mr. Carter, neither did we.

But really, his Twitter is hardly the worst thing he's ever done. At least he doesn't give out his manager's phone number to the entire internet. And sometimes, he really just makes us smile:

Rumors or as dumb as the people who believe them.less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet Reply

Why does he have a following at all? Especially on his way to Rikers. Unbelievable. Still laughing at the autotuner comment...

As culturally vacant as Lil' Wayne's tweets may be (who really cares?), this article far exceeds those tweets as a waste of time with no cultural value.

I have no opinion of him one way or another but honestly, these tweets are not bad. I looked at this article because I wanted to see just what he was saying that qualified him for "the worst." He may not be fascinating, but he isn't annoying.

Aww C'mon, every politician and entertainer claims the city they are visiting at that time is "the best". Serioulsy! I saw Price in concert in two different cities and each city was "the best". Please!

Also, Id rather see a Tweet like the above than the ones my friends send updating me where they just finished eating.

Ha... "incessant self-congratulating and bugling." So great.

pathetic people following a rapper on Twitter, get a life people. This young man is still a big kid making millions and millions of dollars because he can express himself thru his style of music which Ii am not a fan of because even as a AA don't understand one word he is saying, but I am not that bored with life or have more of a life than to follow what he is saying. GET A LIFE PEOPLE. This man is in jail and more free than you people probably are and he probably is sitting in jail eating like a king because he has the money to do so and you are talking about his stupid tweets.

I have more respect for him now. It seems that he recognizes that Twitter is frequently mindless and completely overrated.

I have to think you don't know how to use it. It is actually possible to never see the mindless drivel. I'm a design student and my Twitter feed is a jolt of creative inspiration, whenever I need it. That's because I only follow designers who tweet links to the latest and greatest in the creative community. Twitter is highly useful if you know how to use it.

You are taking this way too personally. Nothing you say about yourself negates what I've said. Twitter is often mindless and I find it very much overrated.

And a lot that do have something to say are much less interesting than the characters they have played or the public persona that their publicist puts out there.
05:51 PM on 07/13/2011
Eh... correction. Lil Wayne did not jump on the bandwagon to become a packers fan. He was always a fan of former Packer Brett Farve while he played for the Packers.

And Wayne tweets more than generic shout out to the cities he performs in. Also, I dont see that being a problem, it shows that an entertainer appreciates his fans.

And they were right to be critical of both of them. Jerry Lee Lewis...didn't he marry his 13 year-old cousin? and Elvis...c'mon, seriously? His early career was brilliant, took a time-out to serve his country...but he turned into this drug riddled caricature of himself...how is that any better than any of the rappers or singers today?
