Spinner:

The average lifespan of a band involves everything from playing gigs to breaking up then eventually reuniting, but a fictional band can experience all of the growing pains in one movie or TV episode. Sometimes these make-believe acts are silly and sometimes they're actually good enough to make viewers want to own their songs. Regardless, fictional bands entertain us, which is why we've picked our 23 favorites (and yes, we know we left out semi-fake artists like Spinal Tap and Flight of the Conchords). Check out these fictional groups below and relive their greatest hits.

Never heard of most of these guys. Didnt the Monkeys do some of this? I know that they played their own music later in their carrier but I think they were a studio fake at the start. If so they should be number one as they are a staple of television rock bands. Maybe even the first and by all means the most popular.

Uhh... where's Spinal Tap? Yes, they do actually play their music, but they are and will always be the "number 1 fake band". I don't even like them and I say their exclusion from this list is not just an oversight, but a travesty.

The list is further invalidated by Wyld Stallyns not being in the top 5...

Come on, THE ARCHIES!!!!! They actually had a number one song (Sugar, Sugar).

I assume they meant to leave out shows and movies that were made about bands, like The Partridge Family and "Eddie And The Cruisers", but then there's Ellen Aim and The Sorels from "Streets Of Fire" that should be included.

And before anyone mentions them, The Monkees may have been a fabricated band, but they were a real group, and toured for many many years, and still going.
