The man made a fatal mistake. He probably didn't realize a wave could crash over that rock wall. It's something everyone should realize, though. There are powerful places on this planet and sometimes we just get swept away like ants. Doesn't mean we need to change nature, in fact we shouldn't try to change nature, only our minds. His loved ones now have to endure the pain of his absence. No need to add insult to death.

Having grown up in Hawaii, I've seen my share of tourists turning their backs on the ocean for a photo, only to get drenched, knocked down, etc. No amount of signage will stop people from being oblivious about the power of the ocean. We all learn the hard way; some, tragically, don't live to heed that wisdom.

This blowhole is like a toilet that is being flushed. He would not be consumed by lava, but drowned. There are signs warning people not to get close to the edge of the blow hole and not to swim in it as the current is strong. They'll be lucky if they find his body.

No joke, when I read this headline, I immediately thought that they meant that this man had fallen into the blowhole of a whale. Needless to say, I was quite confused.
This story is so sad, though - especially with his girlfriend going through cancer.

Terrible story to be sure, but if your wife/long-time girlfriend is going to have cancer surgery next week and you have a newborn, I would it might be time to grow the f;,k up and act like a REAL MAN and take care of your loved ones.

Just saying.

Sad story, but someone needs to come up with an alternative name for these geological features, "blowhole" just does something to the 8-yr- old part of my brain.

I've been up close to the very same geological formation where this unfortunate person lost their life, and I don't know how else to describe it except as a blowhole.

It's quite amazing, but obviously highly dangerous if you get too close.

I think we need a headline for every person that dies each day.
