Jon Stewart Rips Republicans Over Debt Ceiling Fight (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/13/11 11:25 AM ET Updated: 09/12/11 06:12 AM ET

Jon Stewart

As you've probably heard, the government is headed for a crisis if the debt ceiling isn't raised by August 2. On Tuesday night's "Daily Show," Jon Stewart summed up our potential default and mocked House republicans for "playing politics with our credit rating."

Stewart discussed President Obama's deal that offers tax increases for the democrats and spending cuts for the Republicans as well as his now famous "eat our peas" comment, but he saved most of his snark for members of Congress, specifically Speaker of the House John Boehner.

According to Stewart, Boehner thinks he's in a different negotiation, one where raising the debt ceiling is his party's "big give" instead of increased taxes despite the fact that both parties have voted to increase it many times before. He offered an analogy:

"It's not, 'Let's all chip in a buy a keg for the party,' it's 'Buy me a keg or I'll burn your f***ing house down.'"

Watch the rest of the clip below to hear why Stewart believes Obama dealing with Boehner is akin to consulting with a doctor who only believes in magic.

Funny interpretation of "crisis". Maxing all credit cards is not a crisis. But being turned down on your next application is.

Oh, and another thing about the great John Kennedy, Sr. When he returned from the UK, he played his cards with FDR to become the first head of the S.E.C. He played the stock market, trading on inside information, constantly, making hundreds of millions of dollars, but in true Democrat form, he conspired with his cohorts in DC to pass legislation to make it a Federal crime to trade on "inside information" --- but Mr. Kennedy never disgorged a dime from his "legal" insider trading ...........

Funny that you waited until the main Kennedys were dead. You make up stuff much?

He got his money another way.

Let's see..............Clinton had the chance to get bin Laden in Torra Bora, but he didn't want to jeopardize his re-election, so, instead, he let 3,000+ people die a year after Preident Bush took office........he was an impeached Preident who lied about having sex in the Oval Office....he lied about Vince Foster .........then there are the good 'ole Kennedy's .......the old man was ambassador to England and was having sex with Gloria Swanson on the ship taking him and his family to the UK...he was making all kinds of deals to line his pockets from every bottle of booze coming into the USA, to this day, and was ultimately asked by the Brits to get out. His sons learned well. Ted was an alcoholic, rapist, murderer; he turned his ex-wife Joan into an alcoholic. He talked a lot about helping the poor. Why didn't he give up some of his ill-begotten wealth to the poor? Jack, Bobby and Ted all should have been indicted for conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Marilyn Monroe.....Obama wrote 3 books, all about himself and is reaping millions from royalties, to this day. Tells you the ignorancy of the people browsing the shelves of Barnes & Nobles. Contrast that with Bush, Cheney & Rumsfeld, all who have written books and donated all funds to soldiers, their families and charitable organizations .....And people dare to criticize the Republicans??

To see of you really know politics, challenge yourself to do this:
Write a persuasive argument that is totally and blindly partisan, like the posting above, only this time make it sound like it is all the fault of the republicans - not sarcastic but actually persuasive.
If you can't do it, you are merely another partisan hack.
Any Joe six pack can write a one sided rave like this, blaming the other guy, but to be able to have a truly complex and thorough understanding of politics, you need to be able to really understand and feel what drives the other side to feel as they do - and maybe even be a little sympathetic to it.
Then, next time you feel the need to write a post critical of liberals, you can do it without sounding like you just copied the text from one of Hannity's monologues and instead sound like a thoughtful informed citizen.

Almost 2 years after leaving Office and you blame Clinton for 911 ?
Shows how mindless you really are. You forgot the hundreds of thousands W left homeless in Iraq and no telling how many dead. But it's the Dems fault.
Get a clue bud.

I think it's time we get rid of people like Jon Stewart and all other Hollywood limousine liberals who just don't understand simple economics: you don't spend more than what you take in and Obama is a typical tax and spend liberal. I never met a Democrat who didn't like a tax he didn't like.

Tell Stewart to move here, to Taxachusetts and pick up my tax tab for a year and then he'll shut up.

But you have a decent health care plan. You don't like it - simple, move to Texas or Arizona with Perry or Brewer to take care of you.

Here is an actual reality check for you:

When Clinton was president, the rich paid a little more taxes and the government had money. Then Bush cut all those taxes, started 2 wars and put Medicare D on our Chinacard™ and now the government does not have money.

Solving this problem does not require 'innovative solutions' it requires 'a calculator' and 'a copy of the old tax code'

Unfortunately Bill Clinton is no longer the President, and a large portion of this country is so disconnected from realty that they believe Michelle Bachmann and Palin actually know something. Folks such as these really need a realitycheck.

Stewart is just wrong on this one.

It's not let's all buy a keg; it's you've been warned for 30 years to stop smoking (over spending); lose the weight (lower spending) or you will find yourself in big trouble.

During those 30 years you've held a job and took in a constant rate of revenue of 18% of GDP. Now that you are ill from over spending, or so fat, you may die from a heart attack, you cannot work as many hours and your revenue is down to 14% of GDP under the tax code Obama signed into law last December.

So it's a spending/eating/smoking problem that has to be addressed. That is the root cause of the problem. Fix that and you will solve your revenue issues.

But according to Stewart, the solution is to continue eating and smoking? And Boehner is like a doctor who practices magic? Then why Stewart, did you say in the beginning of this rather lame piece, that the country has to get it's spending under control? Was that magic too?

And if you wanted to address the revenue side, you might do what millions have done, temporarily increase revenue with a temporary second part time job until you fixed the the spending/eating/smoking issues.

tax burden expressed as a percentage of GDP is meaningless.

The ratio of spending to GDP is up because GDP has fallen and safety net programs like unemployment insurance and Medicaid are covering more people (by design) — that is, what we’re looking at isn’t 'government expansion', it’s the consequences of the slump. Tax receipts are at their lowest in 60 years.

The country has had a 30 year long failed experiment with supply-side solutions in the form of 'trickle down' economics. It is time to end this cruel nonsense...

Trickle-down was a political game meant to give back to those that are the base of the political class, ie the plutocrats.

Trickle down always made me feel trickled on. The obvious and simple thing is to go back to when we werent lost, but that point is always lost on the Talivangelicals and the Mad Hatters.

I love your bio and your point, F&F.

Have a great day!
