'How Could Netflix Do This To Me?': Netflix Users Lash Out

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 07/14/11 10:04 AM ET   Updated: 09/13/11 06:12 AM ET

Judging by the reactions to the Netflix price hike--posted on Twitter feeds, Tumblrs and comments forums across the web--the streaming video and DVD-mail service might want to consider another change to its pricing plans, or at least the way it announces adjustments to them. A community has not been this upset about a decision since Clevelanders learned that Lebron James was taking his talents to South Beach.

Netflix, in case you missed it, delivered a major blow to its users by surprising them with a significant price hike. The company announced that the incredibly popular $9.99 "all-you-can-eat" streaming and DVD rental plan would be scrapped and be replaced by three separate plans: all-you-can-eat streaming for $7.99, or all-you-can-eat one-at-a-time DVDs for $7.99, or a combo for both at $15.98.

Netflix users are not just angry at what they perceive to be the company's unjust greed; they are stung that one of their favorite companies could ever do something like this, and without any warning at all.

The Netflix blog post that announced the pricing change was gamely left open for comments and as of press time, there are about 8,800 pages of comments. Not 8,800 individual comments themselves, but 8,800 pages of comments. And guess what? Most commenters aren't asking for an address where they can send a thank you card.

Indeed, Netflix delivered a rude shock by upping prices 60 percent overnight. Now, its subscribers are taking this as though they are on the wrong end of a shocking breakup. They are going through all of the emotions of the jilted: the betrayal, the disbelief, the heartbreak.

Below are some of the more representative reactions from the Netflix's old flames, who seem to have just three questions for the ex they used to love and who they trusted. Listen up, Netflix. This isn't going to be easy, but there's something that we need to get off our chests:

HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME (I'VE BEEN SO LOYAL)?

I am really disappointed. We have been Netflix customers for over 5 years and a $10 a month increase is way out of line. I think there should be a discount for those of us who want both streaming and DVD's. Otherwise, I have to seriously consider dropping our plan, returning to our one local Independent Video store and the library for our DVD's. -- Bob

This is terrible -- how is this possibly a "terrific value" for everyone who's stuck with you and grown your business. We've told everyone how great your service is over the years, resulting in new subscribers and more revenue for you. Thanks for screwing us! -- Sean, Boca Raton

Netflix I have been one of your biggest supporters, getting my parents, friends and other family members signed up, but I can no longer promote a company that does this to its customers. I have been loyal a long time and its a shame that you disrespect and undervalue your customers so much. -- Brett, Ohio

I know that this move increases their profit by going to only streaming...the problem is, I feel so alienated by them that I'm also looking for the next streaming alternative. I will look at amazon's streaming very seriously...it's not like netflix streaming selection is very good anyway. I feel betrayed and angry. -- Matthew, Purdue University

YOU THINK I SHOULD DATE WHO??? (STREAMING IS TERRIBLE)

Will you be upgrading your movie selection on the streaming side? The only reason I continue to get DVDs is because most of the movies I select are only available that way. I'm happy to stream to keep costs down, but a better selection is required to keep me as a customer. -- Jocelyn, Missouri

I would not mind your unlimited streaming option if you actually listed new, up to date movies on it. I can't tell you how many times we have tried to search for a movie on line and it is not available but rather must be ordered through the mail. Why not offer online everything you offer by mail? -- Laura

My account will be gone August 31st. I get the logic in splitting them out into two distinct plans, but the pricing is just insane. I'm not going to pay $8 a month to stream movies that come on USA every weekend. Unless the streaming catalog starts to mirror the DVD catalog, I see a lot of Red Box in my future. -- Tiffany, Virginia

I've always treated the Streaming portion of Netflix the way Netflix seems to have done -- as an afterthought. The selection of titles available for streaming is mediocre at best, and I rarely find myself using that service, though I'm glad to have had it available when the mood strikes me to just browse for something I'd never heard of before. I guess I'll keep my DVD subscription and just switch over to my (free) Amazon Prime Instant service to get my mediocre-film-streaming fix. The idea that Netflix seriously thinks its DVD service was just an "add-on" to its streaming service seems disingenuous and, if true, delusional. -- Gerry

HOW IS THIS BETTER FOR ME (YOU GREEDY, GREEDY JERKS)?

I think you should fire your marketing department. Anyone that comes up with a 60% price increase scheme and forgets to NOT include even a minimal increase to the service or content at the same time to distract, confuse, bamboozle, or lie to your customers is just stupid. -- Blake, Virginia

Netflix: Great job guys, increase prices by damn near doubling them and don't offer anything additional. How's that working for you? I tolerated the lousy streaming selection because I could get the new stuff by DVD, but now you want me to pay 8 bucks for the lousy streaming selection and an additional 8 for the DVD. Heard of Hulu and Red Box? I have. If you are not competitive on the September 30 switch date color me gone. -- Lynn, Missouri

That has got to be the worst spin job I have ever heard. How is it a great deal for me when my price increases by 50% with no increase in service? It wouldn't be so bad if I could combine limited dvd/blu-ray with unlimited streaming, but you don't offer that option. This is nothing but a "money grab".-- David, South Carolina

Charging $15.98 a month for a combined plan crosses the line. The combination of such a huge increase over the current combined plan price and the lack of a discount for a new combined plan will only anger customers, as these comment treads show. -- Sven, California

Streaming is not too bad an alternative but a vast majority of them do not have the CC and subtitles that their DVD counterparts have.

As for Netflix customer service, there's just no way to actually contact them outside a ph#. That's a problem for those of us who can't use a phone for various reasons (hard of hearing, can't speak well, speak a different language, et. al.)

As much as this absolutely sucks for consumers, we can still make do with what is left. I read a money-saving blog called morewithlesstoday.com. She posts codes for free Redbox and Blockbuster Express rentals at least once a week. There are still plenty of ways to watch what you love and save money.

Don't really care about what it cost. It's a free market and they can set their price.
But I have a free mind and can decide where I spend my money.
Account is closed. No hard feelings. Good bye flix. I've moved on.

This price hike is obviously not just for their own profit margin. They are being squeezed by the production companies because of Netflix's massive customer base. I stream and my mom usually gets them in the mail, so now I will get my own account back. Netflix has been a great deal for far too long; this was bound to happen. Maybe the quality of things available to stream (which is not terrible, but could be a lot better) will improve. Six dollars is not a whole lot.

It isn't even their fault - it's really not Netflix being greedy, it's all the corporate offices jacking up the prices for the licensing rights. If they aren't careful, they'll go the same way as the music industry: down. I prefer Facets to Netflix, (and Blockbuster, and Apple tv, AND redbox) - they have wayyyy more movies in their catalog, and they're a non-profit, so I feel better about parting with my $. I know they focus on independent films and documentaries and stuff, but I never ahve a problem finding a "blockbuster" in their library (sorry, I couldn't help myself). More pros over Blockbuster/Netflix: if they don't have something, they don't have it up there. There are movies in the "saved" part of my Netflix queue that have been there for months - don't lie to me, Netflix! just give it to me straight, but don't play with my emotions. Also, a real person picks your recs instead of a computer analyzing the data in your queue, so you don't end up with a bunch of cartoons for watching 1 season of Family Guy. and the cherry on top: the 1 dvd at a time plan (the plan I have) costs me $90 a year, which is really nice. Cons: no streaming. I know Netflix didn't have streaming either (at first), but now that I've had it, I don't know how to live without ittttt.
12:27 AM on 07/18/2011
Why not offer streaming as an add-on to DVD? I rarely used streaming anyway; been a member for 3 or 4 years and have probably streamed 3 or fewer movies all tolled. I will stay with the 1-at-a-time DVD plan, so all you did is lost revenue from me. I might have gone for a $1 or so increase to keep both, but not double. However, thanks for the price decrease—love keeping costs low!

If Americans had any kind of memory, they'd remember, like 2 weeks ago, Netflix had contract problems with a little company called Starz... Both parties said then that licensing fees would increase dramatically between them. In addition, the other distributors are looking at Netflix profits and saying, "hey, we should get a bigger slice of that pie", and also increasing fees.

This is purely trickle down economics... the real kind.
09:11 PM on 07/16/2011
BTW, I agree they should have raised this cost in increments, maybe even grandfathered in people for a year... I have changed my account to pure streaming for now.
12:25 AM on 07/18/2011
In September I am changing to pure DVD by mail.
12:26 AM on 07/18/2011
That is the way trickle down always works; those at the bottom get the worst of the deal.

This is pretty pathetic. Many of you complainers act like jilted lovers... "How could you do this to me? I thought you were different from all the others. I'm so hurt. Blah, blah, blah..."

They are a corporation. They exist to make money for those who own them. If you thought differently, you were sucked in by a simple PR strategy. Stop complaining and either pay, or move on.

There - I feel better now... ;)

Cancel your Netflix service and move on, something or someone will fill the void. Why, cause there will be money to be made. Hollywood needs something akin to Netflix!

I can afford the price increase. What I don't like is the snarky email Netflix sent us that didn't even have an apology for them jacking up the rates 60% and also didn't include an explanation for the huge price increase. I also didn't appreciate another price increase when they just raised prices on us in November, especially since I've only been a member since June 2010. Plus, they aren't offering us improved selection or service for the price hike, or a bundle discount. So, I'm moving on to Amazon and Redbox, even if Netflix is still the best price. That's poor customer service, and I deserve to be treated better than that, and not be taken advantage of.

After 4 years, I cancelled. The value is simply not there. BB has a better streamin selection and I can get new release movies from a number of places.

If Netflix would only get better selection of streaming by adding all the movies they have to the streaming service, I'd pay that much just for the streaming, and ditch the DVD service. I won't pay that much for the separate services though. It is too steep of a hike to pay since most of the DVD's we get are new releases and they take months to show up. I'll just switch to getting DVD's from the video store down the street and Redbox. I think this price hike is gonna backfire on Netflix. I have no loyalty to any particular company and I don't think most consumers do either.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I don't think we're going to see a mass exodus of Netflix customers, but you never know...

I'm tempted to just cancel on them, but instead I downgraded my service to unlimited DVD with only two out at a time, and no streaming. I've never streamed. I have no plans to stream. Why should I pay extra for it? If they continue, as they say, to push toward all streaming, they will certainly lose my business.

I did just that. It looks like the DVD will go the way of the dodo, but in the meantime, our family will still observe the ritual of gathering four people together to watch a movie or series and compare notes and plan for the next movie. We enjoy the service.
