BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Sobbing mothers dressed in black crowded the streets of Brooklyn Wednesday night.

Many had come from Monsey and New Square, 50 miles to the north, and they wailed as if the child they'd come to mourn was their own.

The women were among the thousands of mourners who filled the streets of the Orthodox Jewish enclave of Borough Park for the funeral of Leiby Kletzky, the 8-year-old boy whose dismembered remains were discovered nearby early Wednesday morning. Parts of the boy's body were found in a dumpster a few miles from the neighborhood and in the freezer of a man who is now in police custody.

"It's as if we all lost a child," said Esther, a mourner who declined to give her last name.

Leiby was supposed to meet his mother at a neighborhood grocery store shortly after 5 p.m. Monday evening. Instead, he vanished from the neighborhood, last seen alive on a surveillance camera outside a dentist's office where his alleged killer had come to pay a bill.

That man, Levi Aron, 35, allegedly told police he killed the boy in a panic after seeing the child's face on a missing poster, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters at a press conference Wednesday morning.

Officers tracked Aron to a Brooklyn home owned by his father. When confronted, Aron allegedly gestured to the kitchen, where police found the boy's remains inside the refrigerator, along with three bloody knives and a cutting board, Kelly said.

The grisly slaying has rocked this close-knit community, whose members consider their corner of New York among the safest in the city.

"We hear these stories on the news, but we don't live these stories," Faigy Neumann, a mourner who lives in the neighborhood, said.

In the nearly two days between when Lieby went missing and his body was found, she said she and her friends worried over him as any mother would.

Those who spoke with The Huffington Post all said the boy's fate was simply unthinkable.

So, too, was the identity of his suspected killer. For many, as horrible as Leiby's gruesome death is the knowledge that it came at the hands of one of their own.

"The shocking part is that it's one of us," Neumann said.

A neighbor, Hindy, who also declined to give her last name, physically recoiled when another mourner showed her a picture of the alleged killer on his BlackBerry. She said she'd been too distraught to eat since hearing the news. Instead, she'd spent most of the day Wednesday outside the family's five-story building, a sack of tissues strung around her arm.

That night, she joined the thousands attempting to cram into a narrow ally near 16th Avenue outside the synagogue where Leiby's funeral service was held. Many held cell phones aloft, so absent mourners could hear the speeches.

"This child was a sacrifice for our sins," Rabbi Binyamin Eisenberger said in Yiddish, audibly weeping as he addressed the crowd.

He was not alone in his tears. When a brief but punishing downpour delayed the service, many noted that the sky itself was weeping for Leiby.

Or as one mourner, Chana, put it: "God was crying with us."

I've read the posts, people the mother's going to live with the pain and guilt of "what if" for the rest of her life.. you don't need to add to it.Comments about gays.come on! There are so many "straight" males and female child molesters in the world...get off that soap box, no basis, this is a horrible tragedy especially a child,no matter what race, creed, age cannot trust an adult to give him directions, Not trusting another human being to be helpful, that's sad.Why can't some of you be more open to others feeling? are YOU that insensitive to the grief this family and community is feeling? What ever happened to good will towards men? Put yourself in their shoes for a second. You may not understand their religious beliefs,or understand why this child was walking home alone, but thousands of children do it every day, remember the stories of your parents "when I was a child I walked 5 miles in the rain and snow etc etc?have some compassion for the family. The perp?..off with his head... I am not the law. I'd probably have to asked to be excused as a juror, that is why we have our government set up the way we do in the great USA.. and hopefully justice will be served. To the family, I hope you're not reading these posts so your hearts aren't hurt anymore , if so, may God help you heal.

I hate it when a Human decries that God is with us or cries with us or God is mad wand will punish u. God is on the side of the Universe and we are insignificant to him. We are mere particles on a small scale. If anything is true the all knowing Lord has seen everything that has past and will come to be so why would he stop to cry with you pr take sides in a fight that has no bearing on the universe.

This article is about a little boy's funeral. One who died a terrifying and horrific death at that. Have you been to a funeral? Some of you people have no heart at all. I feel sorry for you! Rest in peace Leiby! May the family also find peace in this hate filled world!

I followed the story of the poor little Syrian boy who was kidnapped, tortured & killed, & I don't remember seeing a bunch of people jumping on the anti-religious bandwagon on the articles talking about the story! Have you people no shame?!

Child molestation has become practically an EPIDEMIC! And THIS problem & THIS problem alone, is what needs to be focused on at a time like this!

Nobody should be blaming Leiby's parents, their faith, or mocking their grief! I hope some of you leaving these kinds of posts don't have children of your own. God help them if something should ever happen to them & you have to put up with public ridicule & be made to feel shame!

And I hope anyone thinking of writing a rude comment back to me about what I've said here, will think twice before posting & ponder on what I've said.

It's time for people to STOP being so callous to one another & to start SHARING in each other's sorrows, griefs, laughter & pain. We need to be more connected than this!

The Hassidic community needs to be more on the up & up about child molestation. Nobody is denying this-including them now! They've believed for too long that "one of their own" wouldn't do such things & that unfortunately has lead to several molestation cases in their community & now poor Leiby...

Trust me- they are paying for their mistakes all on their own. They don't need "help" feeling

I am really disappointed in some of the comments on this page. Now is NOT the time to complain or chastise these people over their religious beliefs! It's obvious those of you criticizing the Rabbi's comment (that Leiby was "a sacrifice for our sins"), doesn't know the 1st thing about Judaism, so why complain?

According to Jewish belief, if a child dies before the "age of accountability", the fault is of the communities! The crime, the perversions, the disparity in income, depression, etc. Can ANY of you argue w\this point?!

And when a community protects a pervert like Levi Aron (people had said the dude was strange beforehand), it's usually over their PRIDE & not because their religion told them to do it! In fact, according to Judaism, it is forbidden to protect anyone who would hurt the little Yidden! But people feel embarassed, so they keep quiet! This is DEFINITELY a "people problem" & not a religious one!

How many times in the secular world, will people protect their son when they find out he's a molester or suspect he's one? LOTS of parents have a hard time locking their own kids in prison. So they keep their mouths shut & hope the "problem" will go away w\therapy or pills.

Stop picking apart a comment made by a mourning Rabbi & get a life! This article isn't the time or place to be making fun of their "skygod".

If that was true, your sins would be forgiven. Guess again..

I fully understand how tragic this is, but why is this in the Religion section? Bcs he was Hassid? Shouldn't it be in the regular (horrible) news section?

This is a criminal act of unrivaled proportion which should not be tolerated in our society. My heart is deeply saddened for this family, but to say that "God was crying with us." is absolutely ludicrous. If there is a god, and he is as omnipotent as so many say, he would not permit such evil to exist in this world.

God did not do this.A man with free will did this.We are not robots. We are human beings who know right from wrong. If this man is mentally ill (and who in their right mind would do this) he will be held accountable in this world and the next. While I am not Jewish,I would guarantee not one Jew there would curse God for this.If God forbid this happened to one of my children I would not blame God.I would blame the person. I would thank God for the time I had my child and know he/she was safely returned to the LORD.We draw strength to go on from God. My concern is if this was some poor little child from the Ghetto, would this have even made the news. ALL OUR children need to be protected from predators. Now we see that any race, religion,or nationality can be a predator. We are not yet with God where it is truly safe.

The murderer seems to be of unsound mind. I cannot believe a balanced person could commit such a crime. We may know people around us who may need psychiatric help, but we remain silent until the unspeakable happens. It always happens. Sad, but true. We mourn with the bereaved.

Is the blood-thirst of this 'God' never quenched? How can people believe in an entity that would act like this? If god was real, especially the Abrahamic version, I'd be an anti-theist instead of an atheist, eternal damnation be damned.

If you listen to the religious, you'd think that their god has an insatiable thirst for blood, yes. He can never get enough. Most of the theology is centered around blood and its redeeming qualities, all stemming from the ignorance of the ancients. And why would God cry, when, in His omniscience, He should have seen this coming? And could have chosen to stop it? I guess they'll come up with an explantion for that.

God Crys?? Seriously... Why do people use god to project their own opinions and feelings into.
