Miranda Kerr Named Son Flynn After Ex-Boyfriend

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/14/2011 8:38 am Updated: 09/13/2011 5:12 am

Miranda Kerr sat down with Australia's Daily Telegraph to talk about her newfound respect for her body, embracing Zen philosophy and juggling work and motherhood. The Victoria's Secret Angel revealed that she named her newborn (the dad is husband Orlando Bloom, lest you forget) after an old flame.

Reporter Lisa Marks explains:

Flynn Christopher Blanchard Copeland Bloom was (in part) named after Kerr's first boyfriend, Christopher Middlebrook, who died in a tragic car accident when he was a teenager. In her book Treasure Yourself, she wrote of that time: "Chris' death taught me that the people who touch your life are always with you. It taught me that I have the choice to be grateful for the time I had with him instead of dwelling on losing him."

"Chris and I had been dating for two years," she says today. "After he died, I wrote him a letter that said I hoped to name my first child after him in some way. I told Orlando and he was the one who said he'd be happy to do that. Orlando's a good guy."

A good guy, indeed. The same guy, in fact, who stayed by Miranda's side during her 27-hour-long labor. The model previously told Conan O'Brien that Bloom did not leave the room once, saying, "He was there every moment by my side, I never even let him go to the bathroom...he had to pee in a bottle."

He's also a great dad, previously telling People.com, "[Flynn]'s my boy, he's amazing....Everything you know, all the things that you thought were important, drift into the background. And even things that were important really come to the fore and he's one of them."

I'd be absolutely thrilled if my wife named our son after an ex boyfriend. Not!

Despite HuffPo's absurdly sensationalist headline, this is a rather heartwarming story.

That's a really sweet thing to do.I'm having a baby boy in December.I went through so many names(before we knew what it was)and my bf said no to everything just to irritate me,then couldn't remember the names he liked.I was pretty ticked off.I went with Peyton. It's a name I came up with with my ex-fiancee.I wanted something different and he(my ex) wanted something country.I remembered seeing Peyton on a Nascar commercial, and we both loved it.I told my bf(baby's dad) where it came from but it doesn't bother him.Maybe because I have no feelings towards my ex,he treated me really bad.I'm happy for Miranda and Orlando, and their baby boy. :)

Interesting. I didn't know about her past and her bf. But "I never even let him go to the bathroom...he had to pee in a bottle." ??? Seriously?! I definitely cannot do what he'd done, even if I had a gf/wife as beautiful like her. If nature calls, sorry, I just had to go!!

Why not say named after her late boyfriend? The headline makes it appear the boyfriend is living.

My best friend just signed off on his divorce. During the proceedings it came to light that their two children were named after her ex-boyfriend's two dogs. For real. To say that came as a surprise is an understatement.

You're welcome! They weren't even traditional dog-like names (Quinn and Wynter) so that was a real shocker to discover. But the thing that got my buddy the most was that she tabled a few names and he picked Quinn, so he thought it was his idea all along. haha Poor guy!

No surprise here although she did admit it.  I can't tell you how many of my friends named their first boy after their first boyfriend/serious love.  The dads never know.  I'll bet it happens a lot more than people realize.

Don't most people talk about that openly with their husband. I mean, the name of their first love and such. Unless there's something to be ashamed about.
