Scott Walker Critics Say Effort To Recall Wisconsin Governor Likely To Prevail In 2012

Scott Walker Recall Election

First Posted: 07/14/11 10:15 AM ET Updated: 09/13/11 06:12 AM ET

MADISON (Reuters) - Wisconsin Democrats are increasingly confident that efforts to recall the state's Republican governor in 2012 will succeed, a top official said on Wednesday, after the party scored an early win in its battle to unseat Republicans who backed a controversial anti-union law.

Mike Tate, the chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, said his party's sweep of six unusual primary races on Tuesday night had energized the party's base, and he also expected to seize a majority in the state Senate in August recall elections.

Tate said Tuesday's primary races, where six real Democrats were unsuccessfully challenged by six stealth Republicans running as Democrats, had served as a dry run for the party's get-out-the-vote operation.

"What we're beginning to see is our momentum rolling downhill. Last night was a huge win for us," he said in a conference call with reporters.

He said that would pay dividends in the real recall elections, which begin next week, as well as in next year's general election, where Wisconsin is likely to be a battleground state as President Barack Obama seeks a second term in the White House.

Tate said Governor Scott Walker, who was elected last fall and can't be recalled until he has served a year in office, would likely be forced to defend his seat next fall.

"I have every reason to believe Scott Walker is going to be recalled from office," he said. "He will lose an election if it's held in November 2012, and there is no scenario in which he can be reelected in 2014. His numbers are that bad."

Asked about a potential recall, he said: "The most likely scenario, and one that the Democratic Party will support, is a recall effort of Governor Walker in November of 2012."

UNION DEBATE

The fractious debate over the union measure propelled Wisconsin to the front of a wider national political battle as Republicans who took control of many statehouses in 2010 midterm elections moved aggressively to shrink government and made reining in public unions a top priority.

"The Republican Party of Wisconsin is in a weaker position electorally than anyone could have thought possible in January of this year," Tate said. "They have destroyed any independent voters that came out and gave them a chance last November."

In all, six Republican senators who supported the anti-union measure, and three Democrats who opposed it, will be forced to defend their seats this summer after recall petitions were signed by thousands of disgruntled voters.

The law, which dismantled key bargaining rights for most Wisconsin public sector employees, triggered the biggest opposition demonstrations in the state since the Vietnam War.

The Republicans said the party's unorthodox decision to run six Republicans as Democrats in Tuesday's primaries was needed to buy time for the six targeted incumbents to campaign, raise money and maintain their party's hold on the state Senate.

If Democrats gain just three of the seats at stake in the special summer elections, they will take control of the upper house and have a better chance at thwarting Walker's far-reaching legislative agenda.

Republicans will continue to have a majority in the lower house, or Assembly.

Nobody in Wisconsin wants Walker. He's ruining our state and turning it into a corporate dictatorship where only the richest top 1% of people here have any rights. He's even eliminating college students' right to vote right now. It's unbelievable how evil this man is. Thank God the people of Wisconsin, in poll after poll, have shown they want him out. In fact, NONE of the Republican governors voted in just  Read More...

Recall him then undo every single piece of legislation he put forth. That would make his term in office a total waste of time and a complete and total embarrassment for the rest of his life.

Too bad we can't return to the days when America was the pre-eminent economic superpower, with widespread unionization and a vibrant middle class. Instead, 30 years of conservatism has us circling the third-world drain.

Fanned. You are absolutely, spot on. The GOPer oligarchic plutocracy class has written the United States off. They see their future in the Asian markets, with it's burgeoning new infrastructure expansion, educated, cheap labor force and multi-billion consumer potential. They're saying why should we invest in America. They could care less about unemployment, crumbling roads. and vanishing manufacturing. They'll slowly come back, when they've destroyed the middle class and unions and bottomed out our wages.

It is the unions that nearly destroyed the American auto industry (with the "jobs bank" they didn't even have to work to draw 80% pay) and thankfully American's have finally decided to stop leaving so much money and power in the hands of union bosses. There are laws in effect to protect worker's safety so the main reason for unions is now gone. The biggest reason for unions now is to protect the lazy.

Then by your reasoning, it was really the Industrialists who abused the workers so badly, it caused the workers to unite to create unions. If the owners hadn't cheated the employees every which way but loose, there would be no need for unions. There is a rich history of how the industrial revolution changed the world, and how strikes like the ones in New England changed our work week. The first Women's Strike was here at a mill in Dover. http://www.villageprofile.com/newhampshire/dover/02/topic.html

Do you know why so many church steeples have clocks that ring the hour? Because mill owners had their own time clocks and added minutes and hours in summer as the days stayed lighter - without extra pay of course.

???? Writers have you misquoted or misedited, most people following the process will tell you we don't have to wait to November 2012. It happens sooner than that. He had to be in office one year, and along with him some of the remaining GOP senators. Challengers to them are in the works now too.

GW looks clever by comparison. Walker's got that late-night-manager at Taco Bell look about him. Is it that hard to imagine him picking up food trays--or for that matter wearing a pair of khakis in a corporate cubicle?

Thanks. The ride to Wisconsin is worth it alone even if the food isn't. I expect it is, and besides, a public statement like they made shows courage and support for the people of Wisconsin to me. That should be rewarded in any small way one who cares can. Thanks again.

what's really great about this is that you recall the people that are trying to fix your financial situation and then tax the people that create most of the jobs. The poor private sector person is left being fleeced by the unions who only pretend to protect them. So they simply pay more for less. Companies will leave your state -- you'll lose jobs and the dems will now have to deal with a budge crisis. There won't be the rich to blame and so you will just start to fight amongst yourselves.

The best part is those people who believe in indivudal achievement will have left your state and gone to states who actually support growing the economy instead of taking from it. So Dems -- go for it -- I look forward to you willing the battle but losing the wars. Maybe you can hook up with folks over in Michigan and form one big support group.

actually it's happening all over -- why do you think companies are moving out of CA and New York, and soon WI. Both individually and as collection (in the case of companies) -- people know when they are getting fleeced by Government. And yes -- you will go down hill -- and while I wish no harm on people of WI -- you get what you deserve when you elected a bunch of spenders and union protecting governors.

So why haven't the "job creators" been creating jobs for the past decade that they have been enjoying the lowest tax rates in 60 years?

Businesses don't create jobs because they get a tax break, they create jobs when demand for whatever they sell goes up. If you own a bakery that sells an average of 10 cakes a day and your taxes get cut, you don't hire a second cook to double the number of cakes you make. You hire a second cook to double the number of cakes you make when customers start buying more cakes.
08:01 AM on 07/15/2011
you're looking at it the wrong way. If hiring a person now means I have to pay 50% of his/her overhead because of new taxes, policies, etc... than I would hold back or consider outsourcing. If taxing profit in certain industries means I need to pay 10% more, then I ask whether it's worth expanding in those areas. If you're going to get rid of the "loopholes" that I count on to incent me to invest in areas that would otherwise not be profitable -- than I would forgot creating new jobs. These are just examples.

Sorry, Democratic Party...YOU do not get to determine "when" Walker's recall election is held. For Democratic operatives to think otherwise means that they are misinterpreting Wisconsin's Republican Recalls just as Walker "ReTH UGlicans" misread the election results in 2010.

Walker's Recall and that of the Republican Senators has NOTHING to do with the Democratic Party for most of us. It is about sending a very direct message about what happens when elected officials put ideology and ambition ahead of democratic principles and the rights/interests of Wisconsinites. It's slap-down of abusive power...It is NOT about what is best for the Wisconsin Democratic Party.

Continued Democratic political posturing will lose the Independent vote in Walker's recall. Recall sentiments will begin to die once Walker is neutered by a Democratic majority in the Senate. Waiting until November 2012 means risking a failed Walker recall effort.

Get out of the way....Walker's Recall needs to happen in January!

In just one quarter of the senatorial districts the democrats have gathered one half of the number required signatures to recall the governor during the senate recall campaign... Assuming that all those who signed those petitions would also sign to recall Walker he is done!

Didn't say it had anything to do with Murdoch other than both of them representing hope. Was it really worth your energy to post that?

But now that you mention it, Murdoch is in trouble, also because people are expressing their rights and his invasion of them.

Also the details of how much Obama has collected in campaign contributions was shockingly good news.

Obama has collected twice as much for the campaign coffers as all the GOP candidates combined.

And those contributions are still coming from the grass roots with the average contribution being just under $100.

Some pundit said that most shockingly, 286,000 contributors were first timers. Apparently there are many people paying attention and getting involved.

I am waiting and watching for Scott Walker to sell a power plant to Koch Brothers.

He passed a law allowing him to sell off power plants without oversight.

SECTION 44. 16.896 of the statutes is created to read:
16.896 Sale or contractual operation of state−owned heating, cooling, and power plants. (1) Notwithstanding ss. 13.48 (14) (am) and 16.705 (1), the department may sell any state−owned heating, cooling, and power plant or may contract with a private entity for the operation of any such plant, with or without solicitation of bids, for any amount that the department determines to be in the best interest of the state.

***** If and when such a sale takes place, serious investigation of the deal will be undertaken. This smacks of fraud, corruption and conflict of interest.
