Steve Bach, Mayor Of Colorado Springs, Criticized For Not Signing A Resolution Condemning Possible Hate Crime

Hate Crime Colorado Springs

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/14/11 11:40 AM ET Updated: 09/13/11 06:12 AM ET

Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach has rejected a call to sign a resolution condemning a savage beating of five gay men, two of whom have been identified as Fort Carson soldiers, that occurred on the evening of July 3 and has been categorized by the victims as a hate crime.

According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, 40 people attended a rally at City Hall where local Democrats and leaders of the local LGBT community called out Bach and the City Council to take a harder-line stance against this violent crime and pass a resolution denouncing hate crimes specifically against Colorado Springs LGBT citizens.

El Paso Democratic Party secretary Carolyn Catley spoke at the rally with strong words directed at the city government, the Gazette reports:

It is not one incident that brings us here, it is an incident that has been tolerated for over a decade. It is an incident that has been tolerated by members of our council and our mayor who will not speak out and denounce hate crimes against our citizens.

This rally occurs just days before Colorado Springs's annual PrideFest this Sunday, over which Bach has also received criticism for not signing a proclamation in support of the event, Huffington Post reported earlier.

But the LGBT community in the Springs is still planning to turn out for PrideFest in large numbers despite Bach's hesitancy in both situations. Charles Irwin, executive director of Colorado Springs Pride Center spoke to KWGN about the LGBT community in Colorado Springs:

Most people in this community, despite the stereotype about the Springs, they support equality for all GLBT people. But the mayor missed an opportunity to underscore that.

The two victims who are soldiers have described the attack on the night of July 3, but have kept their true identities a secret because being identified as homosexual could do damage, or potentially end, their military careers, 7News reports. Although one man calling himself "Ted" says most of his military peers already know that he is gay, he still says he needs to protect himself from the military brass finding out about his sexual orientation.

On the night of the attack, the five friends were out celebrating the birthday of one man calling himself "Johnathan." The group had stopped by Albertaco's, a local fast-food restaurant, when a group of African-American males walked in and singled out the gay men because one of them was wearing skimpy shorts from his dancing job at a gay nightclub, according to KWGN.

Jonathan, in a statement to KWGN, said that as his friends were viciously beaten with brass knuckles and kicked in face and ribs, the alleged attackers shouted several derogatory statements:

We felt pretty helpless. They were saying a lot of homosexual slurs like 'faggot' and 'queer' and stuff like that.

7News reports that all-in-all, the men suffered serious injuries: one victim was treated for a facial fracture and had his jaw wired shut, while another had six bruised ribs and one eye that was swollen shut for nearly 10 hours.

Mayor Bach did release a statement to Fox31 stating, "There's no place in our city for violence, discrimination or intolerance. I expect our Police Department will do a thorough investigation and prosecute any offenders to the fullest extent allowed by law."

KWGN reports that anti-gay hate crimes are on the rise nationally, up by 13 percent in the last year alone, according to a recent report by a national coalition of anti-hate groups.

Only one suspect has been arrested, but the investigation is ongoing.

He's doing nothing but enabling the attackers. By not condemning the hate crime, he's saying it isn't a hate crime.

Well, congrats for speaking out against violence...

And shame for you bigoted views of homosexuals.

If you believe homosexuality is a choice, then you are probably bisexual...and I'm not saying that to insult you, but think about it...are there any members of the same sex you are SEXUALLY attracted to? If your answer is no, then you must certainly believe it's possible for you to become sexually attracted to members of the same sex, right? If you just came across the right guy, right?

I live in Colorado Springs. It's a beautiful city. It's not a tolerant city by any means, but there are good people here.

I know lots of gay people who have made lives here and carry on, but most of them have suffered considerable trauma in so doing. I have black neighbors who recently moved here after living across the country and in Italy with their three kids and never encountered such blatent racism (from students and teachers) as they have here. I know a Viet Nam vet who has lived here for over 40 years. He's hispanic, born in Texas, and this year had a group of people shout at him on the street "Go back to Mexico, you dirty s----"

My husband and I worked for 8 months to help President Obama get elected. But we knew we were making a commitment that would likely cost us friends. It was worth every one of them. And the new friends we made are awesome.

well number one...obama is an usurper and he was selected by the elites, all these so called presidents are selected by the illuminadi, secret society, and the electorial college,i speak against homosexuality,so what...are you gonna call me a hate monger because of it,im an israelite jew/cherokee ansestory,it is a lifestyle, they chose to be that way,THE MOST HIGH EL(i dont call HIM god),did not make men nor women homosexuals, just because im against their lifestyle,if i see them just being beaten down, robbed,of course i will come to their aid,but keep that lifestyle behind closed doors, and no they dont belong in the military

I don't like hate crime statutes any more than I like mandatory sentencing laws. Both take discretion away from the judge and give it to the prosecutor, who basically determines the punishment by choosing which crimes to charge the defendant. Zero tolerance policies do the same thing to school administrators, forcing them to apply "one size fits all" punishments without giving consideration to individual circumstances.

I live in Colorado Springs, Beautiful city, great people. Aren't ALL violent crimes against someone else hate crimes? Prosecute the attackers to the fullest. Obviously Bach does not want to sign a Proclamation endorsing the Pride event. So what? We live in a free country. We don't HAVE to endorse the behavior of others. That does not make us bad people. The bumper stickers here say, Celebrate Diversity. Trust me, libs do NOT celebrate the diverse opinions of conservatives.
03:44 PM on 07/15/2011
Yaayyy! That needed to be said. Bravo!
04:29 PM on 07/15/2011
Bravo!! Couldn't have said it better myself. Remember that freedom goes both ways. Toleration does NOT mean endorsement. Each and every one of us has the right to that choice.
04:16 PM on 07/15/2011
I don't celebrate hatefull opinions.

And the Springs is freakishly conservative so he's either himself a bigot, or scared he won't get re-elected if he supports LGBT rights.

Dunno why people live there, go to Manitou, go to Denver, go to Boulder. Anywhere but the home-town of Focus on the Family.

This is our, 'strong mayor,' - yeah, right. The choices we were presented with for this position were horrid. When the results of the election were presented guess what? DO OVER - and two people were presented for us to pick from. This guy won.

So - here were are, with this guy to deal with. Is there any question how he would deal with a Person or Persons with Disabilities who experience such a hate crime in this city? NO.

There are words to describe this guy, but I can't put them down on this site.

I've said it once, I'll say it again. There should be no such thing as hate crimes. It is unbecoming of a nation that believes in equal rights. Everybody should be juged according to the same standards, and there should be no favored or protected class of people. The people who were responsible for beating these five men should be prosecuted and punished as anybody else would for beating anybody else. Yes, those responsible need to be punished, but the punishment should not be altered because the victim chose a different lifestyle. Equal treatment for everyone.

I was almost with you until you said "the victim chose a different lifestyle."...

Gays don't 'choose' to be gay.
12:57 PM on 07/18/2011
Apart from what any social or sceintific community may say, does it really mater if it's a different lifestyle /different values/ skin color/ whatever. The fact is that everybody should get equal treatment in justice, and a person being diffierent should not alter teh punishment of the crime.
04:51 PM on 07/18/2011
sorry, but it is a choice, they were not born like that, gay used to mean happy, now they take that word and use it for themselves, they stole the rainbow, that THE MOST HIGH EL(i dont call HIM god) created after the flood for a sign between HIM and noah, now they use that for their purpose, they teach this to our children in our schools....IT IS A CHOICE,THEY WERE NOT BORN HOMOSEXUALS...guess what,my friend used to be a homosexual, and even he said it was a choice and that lifestyle is wrong

Hate comes in all forms but hate on behalf of the bible is the worst. i seem people thing they can do anything, hurt people, kill, and take away the rights of others because the bible okays it. Which is not true but in their mind it is. This county was founded on freedom and liberty, not hate! Hate crimes is spreading like a wild fire and it time people take a stand for what is right, not put their head in the sand or look to a book for the values of what is right. When harm is done to a person, you do all you can to make sure it does not happen again. Other wise you are as guilty as those who did the crime!

Interesting how one person deserves more justice than another based on thought control. The concept of a "hate" crime is totally foreign to actual justice.

Prosecution for assault? Yes Even attempted murder? Perhaps.. But DO NOT diminish the victim hood of other assault victims simply because the attacker supposedly did not "hate" them.
12:56 PM on 07/15/2011
Indeed, I have already made a comment, but I agree with you 100% It is a disgrace for a nation that champions equality to distribute unequal justice just because people chose a different lifestyle. Hate crimes need to be taken out of our judicial dictionary. Everbody should get the same treatment when it comes to justice.

Both of you aren't understanding that this isn't about one type of victim being more 'valuable' than another. It's about the motivation and resultant perceived dangerousness to the public of the person committing the crime.
