Carmageddon Begins Today (LIVEBLOG)

We're hours away from "Carmageddon," the 53-hour period when the 405 freeway between the I-10 and U.S. 101 freeways will be shut down. From Friday, July 15 at 7 p.m. until Monday, July 18 at 6 a.m., the public has been advised to stay close to home, use public transportation and even avoid the roads altogether.

The Huffington Post Los Angeles will be covering the highway shutdown the entire weekend, from traffic reports to demolition progress. Come to us for a liveblog of conditions on the roads, breaking news, and the best ways to get around the city (if you so dare!).

And if you're out there throwing a block party, braving traffic on the PCH, Sepulveda, or the 101, or even hiking across the canyon, let us know about it. Send updates, photos, and videos via Twitter (@huffpostla), Facebook or email

Don't forget to check out all the details leading up to the 405 closure.

"The pace is promising"

Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky suggests that the demolition will be completed ahead of schedule.

"The consensus is that the contractor will beat by a considerable amount of time the 5:00 a.m. Monday deadline for the freeway’s reopening," he wrote on his blog.

Yet, he cautions Los Angeles residents against being overly optimistic.

"Things can still go wrong; this is a complicated and difficult job," he wrote. "But the pace is promising."

Someone is trying to get out of town a little too fast...

KTLA is reporting on a high-speed chase that started on the 101 freeway in the West Valley over an hour ago. The driver--a DUI suspect with a passenger--has so far been able to stay ahead of police because of the unusually light traffic conditions.

Did Carmageddon impact attendance at tonight's soccer game?

ESPN speculates that Carmageddon may have affected attendance at the Galaxy-Real Madrid exhibition game at the Coliseum tonight.

Large chunks of empty seats tarnished the Coliseum ambiance when both teams took the field for pregame warmups about half an hour before kickoff.

The game is currently at halftime and Real Madrid is in the lead, 2-0.

The streets are eerily empty...

Encouraged by consistent reports of light traffic, Huffpost LA traveled west on Sunset Boulevard this morning to catch a glimpse of the empty 10-mile stretch of the i-405. Check out the photos here.
