Casey Anthony Appealing Conviction For Lying To Police

First Posted: 07/15/11 02:19 PM ET Updated: 09/14/11 06:12 AM ET

Casey Anthony's attorneys have filed a notice of appeal for her four convictions of lying to police. The document was filed at Orange County Court Courthouse Friday by Anthony's lead defense attorney, Jose Baez.

Last week, a jury of seven women and five men acquitted 25-year-old Anthony of killing her daughter, 2-year-old Caylee. The jury did, however, find Anthony guilty of four lesser counts of lying to police officers about the disappearance of her child.

On July 7, Chief Judge Belvin Perry sentenced Anthony to four years for the misdemeanor counts, but he shortened her term because she has served more than 1,000 days behind bars. She is scheduled for release Sunday.

Anthony's attorneys have also filed a motion asking Anthony be deemed indigent. If the motion is granted, the State of Florida will have to foot the bill for legal expenses associated with her appeal.

Tattoo artist Bobby Williams testified that he gave Anthony the Bella Vita tattoo, which means the good life. "She didn't seem upset about anything ... She seemed pretty happy," Williams testified in court.

  • Evidence

A photograph entered into evidence during day 18 of the Casey Anthony murder trial shows a sheet of heart shaped stickers that were found in Casey Anthony's bedroom. According to prosecutors, the stickers are similar to a heart-shaped sticker found on Caylee Anthony's skull.

  • Car Driven by Casey Anthony

Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, called 911 on July 15, 2008, after being told by her daughter that Caylee had been missing for 31 days. "There's something wrong. I found my daughter's car today, and it smells like there has been a dead body in the car," Cindy Anthony told the dispatcher. Cindy Anthony, a nurse, testified that she is familiar with the smell of human decomposition and said that the odor in the car "was like something I had never -- it was pretty strong," she said.

  • Car Interior

Casey Anthony's father, George Anthony, a former police detective, acknowledged in court he had smelled a "pretty strong odor" when he picked up his daughter's car. He testified that he was afraid of what he might find in the trunk of the vehicle and thought, "Please God, don't let this be my Casey or my Caylee [in the trunk]," he testified.

  • Car Driven by Casey Anthony

Simon Birch, the former manager of Johnson's Wrecker -- the Orlando towing company that impounded Anthony's Pontiac Sunfire on June 30, 2008 roughly two weeks after Caylee Anthony died -- delivered explosive testimony when he described inspecting the vehicle. "It was an odor consistent to what I have smelled in the past when it comes to decomposition," said Birch, who noticed the odor while examining Anthony's car four or five days after it was impounded in the secure lot.

  • Shovel

An evidence photo at the trial shows a shovel that Casey Anthony allegedly borrowed from neighbor Brian Burner on June 18, 2008. "She said she wanted to borrow a shovel to dig up a bamboo root," Burner testified. The prosecution has suggested that Anthony may have used it in the killing, to conceal the body of her slain daughter.

  • Evidence

Dr. Tim Huntington testifies during the murder trial of Casey Anthony on June 17, 2011. Huntington, a assistant professor of biology from Concordia University, testified the lack of bug evidence -- he only found one blow fly leg when he examined Anthony's car in 2010 -- suggested a body did not decompose inside the trunk. The defense entomologist also pointed to research he conducted in September 2010, in which he put dead pigs into the trunks of cars to observe the decomposition process. During that study, Huntington said blow flies were drawn to the pig soon after death. He also noted there was a large amount of fluid left inside the vehicles by the decomposing pigs. "It is a sticky, greasy, disgusting material," Huntington said. "Once it soaks in there, I'm not sure a professional cleaner could get it out." Such a stain was not found in Anthony's vehicle.

George Anthony testified that he discovered someone had broken into his shed and stolen two of his gas cans on June 24, 2008. He suspected his daughter was responsible and confronted her about the missing cans. He testified he walked to the back of his daughter's car to open the trunk when she rushed ahead of him. "As I get toward the end of the car, right toward the passenger rear, just where the tail lights stuff is at, Casey opens up the trunk, throws the trunk open, reaches in and grabs the gas cans and says, 'Here's your f---ing gas cans.' She places them down on the ground and slams her trunk," Anthony said on the stand. Afterwards, Anthony "abruptly got into her car and drove away," her father testified.

  • Doll

Casey Anthony's 52-year-old mother broke down in tears on the witness stand as she testified about the foul smell in her daughter's vehicle during the sixth day of her 25-year-old daughter's trial. "Casey's purse was on the front seat and Caylee's baby doll, her favorite doll, was in the car seat like it was sitting where Caylee would have sat," Cindy Anthony said, describing the interior of her daughter's Pontiac Sunfire. "Caylee's doll smelled like the car so I took it out," Anthony continued. "I sat the doll down and I went and got a Clorox wipe and I wiped the face and hands. The body was soft and so it smelled pretty bad ... I sprayed Febreze all through the car thinking that might help the odor ... I used pretty much a whole can of Febreze."

Are they out of their F...ing minds? She walks clear of murder, now she wants to have the minor convictions erased so she could sue the State for wrongful arrest and imprisonment? She is not only going to collect millions from appearances on TV but, wait till the books, movie, etc..
07:23 PM on 07/27/2011
Are they going to get away with this like they have everything else? This is just another horrific mess tangled in all the other horrific messes this woman has caused.
06:05 AM on 07/22/2011
Just when I thought they couldn’t get any more ridiculous they manage to top themselves. She should be grateful that she didn't get the chair. And her lying has been proved so I don't understand how they think they can appeal those convictions.

There is a growing trend of parents KILLING their kids and kids killing their parents and husbands and wives, girlfriends/boyfriends killing each other! Normal well adjusted people don't think like this, so it is just too UNBELIEVABLE. Casey CAN NOT get away with this for so many reasons, for Caylee and also for all the other children who are not wanted for any reason. It is just too sad.

I would have expected it to turn out this way if it was someone wealthy, high up thought of person etc. etc. Forget O.J., I never thought of him as anything. All I have to say, this trial was The Greatest Comedy On Earth for the way it was handled. The outcome was the Biggest Nightmare on Earth. Prosecutor could not come up with anything that would stick, law enforcement could not prove anything or find any evidence and could not even find a body when called on the phone and told where it was. The duck tape heart shaped raised imprint was even destroyed by a bungler woman who said it was not on her list to run a test on so she destroyed it running her list of tests before she got around to telling anyone it was there. What a disaster. Caylee Anthony's death was lost to the result of no evidence found because no one knew how to find it OR no justice ever for her even BEFORE the body was ever found.

Didn't she play on the Wizard of Oz? I think she lived after the house fell on her.

It figures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This piece of shiet got away with murder, wasted a lot of taxpayers money and now is going to contiune her free ride. I hope Florida will ahve some brain left and do not assign another TV judge who has the gull to be lenient toward a person who as a minimum should be put away for endangering the welfare of her kid, and haing parties for months after her disapperance withouth notifications to any authority. She is the byproduct of a disfuntional family and a sex siko.

Don't pretend to care about the taxpayers money ok to blatantly justify your beliefse, saying it's a waste of the taxpayers money is a sorry excuse. If your concerned about the taxpayers money then be more concerned about pulling the troops out of Iraq.To me and any one who is inquisitive that right their is what's milking the taxpayers money.Blame the war in Iraq ok it's taking several of the countrys money just keeping the troops their. And blame congress blame the right wing republican facists. They are the one who is takeing money from the poor and giving it to the rich.So blameing one person for taxes is a poor excuse and rather stupid.Your not even touching the problem.Don't use stupid judgement to just blindly jump on the bandwagon.

I am sure that everyone has heard the term "street justice". Sooner or later justice is completed and the guilty pay for their crimes. The human conscious is a great convictor of people that manage to escape the folly of men. She KNOWS what she has done and her life will always be in turmoil...never a minutes peace even with herself. I would hate to have to look over my shoulder for the rest of my life. Rest in eternal peace Caylee.

Just one question: Are any charges being brough against Casey Anthony's father for partaking in the concealing of the death/murder of his granddaughter?? Have I missed something here?!

Good lord - this woman reminds me of Sarah Palin - any news, good or bad, is justified in keeping her in the headlines. She should be grateful for what she didn't receive and gracefully exit stage right.

She is a total sociopath--no remorse despite the fact a 2 year old girl was suffocated to death with duct tape over her mouth and buried in the surrounding woods. But the circle always comes around, and I bet any money she will cave in sometime because people like her feed on the spotlight and she, like most others, cannot stop talking about a crime like that. She will alienate herself from everyone she know and everyone she meets. Nobody will hire her because the belief is still there, even if it is not all her fault. There is too much lying going on and she will incriminate hersel sometime. It will be a fitting ending, especially for those who cared the most to realize that there is no excuse for taking the life of anyone, especially that of her own child...,
03:16 PM on 07/21/2011
Yes.....in America we have many rights. And this person has the right to appeal her convictions of lying to the police. Now the trick is for her lawyers to prove the video tapes were doctored, the phone calls were fake, and the child was with her for the 31 days. Even the greatest lawyers of the country can not deny this person's guilt. So, she will get to "play" the system again...but this time, she will not win. Her daughter is truly in a better place.......away from her. This person is simply delusional to think she can win this appeal.

On appeal will she have to take the stand and speak on her own behalf? Admittedly there is entirely too much about the law that I am in the dark about. You would think that if she is appealing that she would need to explain, but I suppose that much of that is done in writing and in a formal way...

I wish there were a way to just make her speak.
02:28 PM on 07/21/2011
SHE CAN'T GET AWAY WITH THIS
SHE STRAIGHT UP LIED TO THE POLICE AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT
Her lawyers are the one whose fault it is anyways she even got convicted of this because she kept changing her story! Her mother committed perjury too they should get her for it! This isn't fair!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. ANYONE OUT THERE. WAKE UP. DO NOT I MEAN DO NOT GIVE HER ANY MONEY. GIVE IT TO THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT AND ARE HOMELESS. SHE FOR NO REASON DESERVES IT. Unfortunately, she has the right to appeal. Not sure how she is affording all of this. Oh yeah.. her attorney is LOVING the spotlight. Maybe they'll actually hit her harder the second tiem around. Or maybe new evidence will come into light. Either way... I'm trusting God ot handle this one. WE may not see the justice, but it is all His. God bless that baby girl.
