The summer heat is here to stay, at least for another month or two, so it’s time to get serious about finding ways to stay cool. One of your best (and cheapest) options is to head to one of Chicago’s many public pools. We’ve found a few of the best pools in the city, some of which offer sweet features like water slides, concessions and more.
Hamlin Park Pool: For prime tanning opportunities, Hamlin Park in Roscoe Village is hard to beat. The large pool is surrounded by plenty of space to lay out and is sun-drenched all morning and afternoon. Arrive early to lay your claim to one of the pool’s lounge chairs.3035 N. Portage Park Pool: The Olympic-size pool at Portage Park offers plenty of space to swim and misting sprays to help you cool off. If you get tired of lazing in the sun, the park also has an interactive water play area with a slide and diving boards. Chase Park Pool: This popular Ravenswood park features a sizable outdoor pool along with a wide range of free programs, including aquatic exercise lessons. While you’re there, be sure to check out the brand-new 7,481-square-foot playground.4701 N. Ashland Ave.; 312-742-7518
Palmer Park Pool: Get a taste of water park fun right in the city – and without paying a dime. Just stop by Palmer Park, where the outdoor pool features three water slides. Several lap swim periods are available each week as well.201 E. 111th St.; 312-747-6576
Holstein Park Pool: This Bucktown pool is perfect for families with rambunctious youngsters. With a playground, swimming pool, separate kiddie pool and a sprayground, there are more than enough ways for little ones to run off some energy and cool down on a hot summer day. 2200 N. Fosco Park Pool: The pool at Fosco Park features zero-depth entry, meaning the pool has a shallow slope leading into the water like at the beach. This makes a great option for older folks or for families with little ones just getting used to the water. Additionally, Fosco Park features a sprayground with a water slide.1312 S. Whealan Pool Aquatic Center: Though it’s a little farther from the city center and costs a few dollars for admission, Whealan Pool Aquatic Center is well worth the trip. The park offers a zero-depth pool, a sand play area, separate baby pool, two water pools and a concession stand all tucked in the gorgeous forest preserve.$5 per person, $3 for children ages 4 – 12 and free for children 3 and under.6200 W.
