Osama Bin Laden Was Exploring Plans To Attack Obama On 9/11 Anniversary: Reports

Prior to his death earlier this year, Osama bin Laden was exploring plans to target President Barack Obama on the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, according to multiple reports.

A raid of bin Laden's Pakistan compound in May reportedly turned up documents showing that the al Qaeda leader had his sight set on attacking the president. CBS News reports:

A U.S. official confirmed to CBS News correspondent Bob Orr Friday that intelligence gathered during the May 2 raid on bin Laden's compound in Pakistan revealed that the al Qaeda head discussed with his operations planners a wide array of potential attacks against the U.S. and senior American officials.

On the heels of the raid, the AP reported that the Navy SEALs involved in the operation helicoptered out of the compound with documents, computer files, and additional information that they hoped would provide intelligence to bolster the fight to weaken and destroy the larger al Qaeda network.

According to reports released on Friday, the documents show plans were being taken under consideration to attack Obama while he was traveling by aircraft. Officials told ABC News that Air Force One and Marine One were discussed as potential targets.

The documents reportedly suggest that General David Petraeus was another potential target for an attack on September 11 of this year. CNN reports that Petraeus declined to comment on the matter through a spokesman on Friday.

The Washington Post recently reported on some of the revelations from materials collected at bin Laden's compound:

Toward the end of his decade in hiding, Osama bin Laden was spending as much time exchanging messages about al-Qaeda’s struggles as he was plotting ways for the terrorist network to reassert its strength.

Over the past year, the al-Qaeda leader fielded e-mails from followers lamenting the toll being taken by CIA drone “explosions” as well as the network’s financial plight, according to U.S. officials who have completed an exhaustive review of the trove of bin Laden files collected at his compound after the May 2 U.S. raid that killed him.

It is tempting yet dangerous practice to look around the world for evil people and target them. That is just what Osama Bin Laden thought he was doing and thus, he was enjoying in doing so. Osama Bin Laden did nothing to satisfy at least 1% of mankind except his own parties. We must be so vigilant that we do not become what we despise. Any time I think of Bind Laden, I think of Evil
In response to Osama’s death, we have to be so very careful of his legacy, since the evil’s spirit still exists everywhere around us. There is a story says that two days after the 9/11 attacks, some of the university students put on an art exhibit in response called Peace Kitchen. In one portion a student had put a film of Bin Laden’s face over a mirror and in reflection they would see their own faces staring back at them through his. The point indicates that there was equivalency between Bin Laden and them, but to acknowledge that evil is not something which only exists outside of us that we can point to and kill once and for all.

You guys seem to forget that this group is still a very viable and growing element. Criticize and ridicule all you want, but both Obama and Bush have had to deal with these people ever since Clinton refused to do anything about the first attack on the WTC, the Embassy and the USS Cole. You can rip either president apart, but they're doing what has to be done to wipe the terrorists out.

There is no citation of either of these sources in the article I'm commenting on. None. Why would you write implying that there was?

Did you make up your (again, entirely anonymous) sources to get attention? Or are you speaking as a person-of-consequence, someone 'in the know,' now charged with secondary dissemination of these unsubstantiated allegations after they got a positive result in early marketing tests in four major markets?

Maybe everything the corporate press attributes here to anonymous sources is true. I have no idea. But there is no source cited in this article by any corporate news group. That's just bad journalism, plain and tall.

You can believe them if you like, and you can urge the rest of us to trust them too.
Remember, the same press assured us night and day that the Gulf of Tonkin incident was absolutely real -- McNamara said even he didn't know if it was -- and WMDs were reason enough to start the first of three disastrous, economically ruinous wars. Also, the BP oil spill has proved harmless, Fukushima is over, and that the billionaire bankers are not to blame for gambling our economy away on derivatives and other esoteric financial crap games.

If we believed the for-profit press on those stories, why not these too? The record, alas, speaks for itself.
