AUSTIN, Texas, July 16 – A Texas state senator's beloved signature symbol will be reluctantly stripped from her campaign vehicle and rally signs this weekend after police in her border town warned it could draw unwelcome attention from Mexican drug cartels.

Veteran Democratic Sen. Judith Zaffirini is known by her friends, loved ones and constituents simply as "Z."

But authorities told her sister recently that the symbol, which translates in Spanish to "zeta," could cause the truck to be mistaken for vehicles belonging to the deadly "Zeta" cartel, based on the Texas-Mexico border.

Zaffirini told Reuters on Saturday she was grateful for the warning, but found it "disappointing" and "mind-boggling."

"Sadly, we will remove the 'Z' from our campaign vehicle and will not use it at rallies or other public places," she said.

Late last month, police in downtown Laredo pulled over Zaffirini's sister, Josie Pappas. The officer pointed to three bumper stickers on the pick-up's back window.

The stickers, bearing the word "Zaffirini," were applied in a big "Z" formation on the glass of the blue Ford F-150 truck.

Pappas told Reuters the officer asked her if she had noticed "cars full of men passing me by and staring back" at her car recently.

The bewildered Pappas answered, "No."

The officer told her that in Mexico, the Zetas had taken to wearing the letter "Z" on their clothing and their cars. He advised her it was best to remove the stickers "at this time."

He hadn't been the first to mention it, and she figured it was a sign that it was time to take them down.

"I'm having a little trouble removing it," Pappas said Saturday, adding that she would just have to "hold my nose and do it."

NO CHOICE

"We just don't have any choice. Those people have changed our lives completely," she said.

Laredo is directly across the Rio Grande river from Nuevo Laredo, a city of more than half a million people and a birthplace of the Zetas, formed in the late 1990s with members of the Mexican military.

The drug war in Mexico has killed more than 37,000 people in the past five years.

The sticker-symbol has adorned all of Zaffirini's campaign vehicles since her days as a money-strapped freshman campaigner in 1986, the senator said.

"Because we only had 12-cent bumper stickers left, my sister, Josie Pappas, thought of improvising for signs by making a "Z" out of three bumper stickers, repeating 'Zaffirini' three times," said Zaffirini, who runs a communications firm. "The resulting 'Z' was attractive and communicated our message."

Zaffirini is known in the Texas Senate for her refusal to back down from a fight and a calm demeanor in the face of hot heads in the Legislature.

"The initial is especially meaningful to me because my favorite fictional hero is "Zorro," who splendidly carved a "Z" to mark the scenes of his good works," she said.

"Who would have thought that an initial that characterizes such a literary hero could be interpreted so negatively in a potentially dangerous context?"

In an email she added: "I will, however, continue to use it personally."

She signed the note, "Z."

It is reminiscent of the famous Costa-Gavros film "Z", from 1969.

Gee, and all of this time I thought "Z" was for Zorro, that legendary masked hero.

The Mexican people deserve a better government and police than they have had for decades. The political corruption and the police bribes need to be stopped. It is time for the government to provide jobs and services for its people. Their solution for too long has been to export their people. Mexicans need to stand up and demand a better government that provides jobs and an honest police force.

Anybody see the article of Friday, July 15 in AFP? Another prison escape in Nuevo Laredo, right across the border from Laredo, TX. 59 prisoners escaped, 7 dead, 5 guards also fled. Of the 59 escapees, 35 were being held on drug trafficking charges, belonging to armed gangs (cartels).

Of course, this was a "minor" escpae compared tothe 350 who escaped from the same prison in December 2010 - so HP may catch up with this new escape in the coming week.

Remember Prohibition?
... it still doesn't work.
Any leader that does not acknowledge the problems "created" by prohibition is either a moron or is corrupt.
Guns cost money... where does the cartels get arguably 75% of their cash?
Is it really so hard to understand... 1)plant weed seeds in the ground,2) do nothing else except cut it down, 3)hang to dry compress 4)pay bribes 5)smuggle to USA 6) make truckloads of cash out of america.
If the demand could be met by local farmers, how could the Mexican or American gangs or any gangs profit? We have a working model of how this works, only 40 or so years old. Same results, better smarter leaders and public I guess.

Ever heard about that Mexican tequila/ beer/ whiskey smuggling?
How many guns were bought with alcohol money? how many gangs have working stills?
Simple as falling off of a log, but beyond even being brought to debate in committee by Lamar Alexander in his display of fear of facts in an indefensible position.
Lily livered, non critical thinking , unable to understand the scientific method dolts.
If they don't get this, how can we expect them to understand complicated issues?
I am a one issue voter now, because its not one issue, its a hundred rolled into one. Also this issue (War on Drugs) is tied to just about everything wrong in the the way our government doesn't work.

Tell the police that Z is for zombie, and Texas is not Mexico, unless governor Perry secedes and join his hermanos del sur.

Truth is stranger than fiction - In the Costa Gravis's 1969 classic film - Z - the final result was that the letter Z was banned. Now that's reality in South Texas!

What kind of Texas politician would not know what Z stands for??? One that is out of touch with reality... The Zetas have been slugging it out for what at least the last 5 years...

Or she could just get over her familial paternalism and become "J."

You ever notice that a lot of what we do now (even laws we write) is in response to what we THINK other people are going to do in response to what we do? On the one hand, they're trying to protect her, but on the other hand, things don't add up. The cartels aren't supposed to be here in the first place. How about not cutting spending on the backs of the people who are supposed to protect us and teach us. How about not sending weapons over the border for them to use on us and each other? Like putting more malt liquor in the black neighborhoods. Sooner or later it's going to get out of the intended area.

Gosh - isn't Laredo, TX, in the United States? And haven't we been told that the violence from the cartels is only in Mexico and not in our country?

So why have to worry about a "Z" on a vehicle in the United States?

Those groups of men eyeing the vehicle while passing it? Just that - admirers, right?

What is scary, is how little the law enforcement understands the cartels ! These are smart business people and they would never jeopardize their business by attacking a US legislator in the US. Imagine she gets killed by the Zeta here, Perry would order the border drones to be loaded with hellfire and take out the drug-lords haciendas along the border, so that he could proclaim himself Kaiser Of Texas ! Not good for business !

A shame, but what can we expect if we refuse to secure our borders and refuse to acknowledge the violence and cartels of Mexico are on this side of the border and active.
