Animal Photos Of The Week

First Posted: 07/17/11 01:40 PM ET   Updated: 09/16/11 06:12 AM ET

This past week was a big one for animals in the news.

16 Dalmatian puppies were born. Threatened snow leopards were spotted in Afghanistan.

"Citizen scientists" were enlisted to help track the bee population, while South African scientists fit penguins with satellite transmitters to track them in the wild.

Oh yes, and a dog bit a shark.

Meanwhile, photographers snapped images of cheetah cubs, bear cubs, and some non-cubs as well. Enjoy!

Love those cheetah cubs! Actually, I love all of these photos.

I got to pet a cheetah once. It was purring very loudly! Their fur is very coarse ... felt like steel wool. I was so excited!

Cheetahs chirp and whistle. Here is a link where you can hear them:

I prefer animals in the wild, too. But these are still great photos. Sadly, some of these animals may not be found in the wild much longer.

Our beautiful animals ... we must take great care of them. I hope that one day soon we can eliminate all forms of animal cruelty and appreciate the gift they are to us. Thanks for the pictures. --Monte

Beautiful pictures.....I love animals of all kinds. I could look at chickens all day, much prefer them to people. Guess I'm fated to become a cra.zy old critter lady.

Me too. I spend most of my waking hours either poetry/painting animals or in some animal rights related activity

Man unkind needs to learn that
This planet is not
For him to burn
Animals are not
For exploitation
They are separate
Vital nations
We are all here
On mother nature's lease
If she does it renew,
Our world will cease

Cheetah cubs with their dandelion fluff heads always have an unfair advantage in any kind of "cute" competition.
