Heat Wave Hits Much Of The United States This Weekend

Heat Wave Us 2011

First Posted: 07/17/11 12:24 PM ET Updated: 09/16/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fiery reds and oranges nearly covered the United States on meteorologist maps as a massive heat wave hit hard in much of the country on Saturday.

Temperatures averaged up to 15 degrees above normal, with most peaks in the 90s but triple digit heat expected to strike from Montana to New Mexico, according to lead meteorologists for The Weather Channel and The National Weather Service.

Paired with oppressive humidity, temperatures will feel even hotter, as measured by the heat indexes.

The NWS issued excessive heat warnings and watches for the Midwest from Texas to Canada, and heat index values over 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 C) are possible for portions of the central and eastern United States by the middle of next week.

Locations affected are expected to see temperatures and heat indexes of up to 117 degrees (47 C), including cities like Minneapolis where that is extremely rare.

"The stage is being set for a massive heat wave to develop," the National Weather service warned on Thursday.

"When your body temperatures rises on a hot day, as much as two liters of sweat can pour out of ... sweat glands each hour," said Weather Channel Senior Meteorologist Jonathan Erdman, meaning your body has a harder time keeping cool.

Meteorologists predict the heat wave will hang on through as late as Friday of next week. Following record heat that has already blasted the country from early June, the prolonged high temperatures pose special dangers to children and the elderly and economic pain to farmers and ranchers.

While the year is entering its hottest time -- the latter half of July -- an exceptional drought is exacerbating summer heat that has broken daily, monthly and all-time record highs over the last couple of months.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Friday that drought and wildfires through spring and early summer have affected millions of acres of cropland, forests and grasslands across the United States.

In a statement directed to farmers and ranchers in states affected by extreme weather, the USDA said drought conditions stretch from Arizona to the southern Atlantic states.

In Colorado, the NWS forecasts temperatures to soar near triple digits in the northern part of the state over the weekend, after 10 straight days of monsoon rains.

The southern part of the state did not see the rains, and it remains in the grips of a multiyear drought that prompted Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper this week to request federal drought assistance in eight counties.

Most of Utah is expected to see temperatures in the 90s over the weekend, according to the NWS, which also issued a red-flag warning for extreme wildfire conditions in the southwest and central parts of the state.

Several deaths in Tennessee, large swathes of which are rural and poor, have been attributed to the prolonged heat wave -- in a few cases, due to a lack of proper air conditioning.

Memphis Light Gas and Water began an emergency reconnection program Friday for people who had been cut off for lack of payment, letting them reconnect to the electricity that powers cooling systems for one price, no matter how much they owe.

Next week the massive high pressure ridge suppressing storm and cold fronts is expected to move from the central United States to the east, spreading increasing heat to the Mississippi and Ohio regions and East Coast.

New graphic image for the day!

It is as if we humans filled up a 600 foot diameter balloon of waste gas ..... every second!
That would be 31.5 million of these 600 foot diameter balloons full of waste gas... every year!
That means we produce enough of these balloons of waste gas to put one on every square mile of the earth ....every 6.2 years!

Imagine seeing a big ugly 60 story garbage balloon full of waste gas every mile, everywhere you went on land and on sea. That means that you would never be more than a couple of miles from nine of these ugly things, no matter where you were on earth or at sea.

If you still think that 30 billion tons of pollution gas per year is not too much, I think you must be one of those folks who enjoy spending time at garbage dumps or sewage plants.

Happy visions!

I looks like the latest commenters need better information. Let me give them some.
First of all, it is 30 billion, with a "b", metric tons of carbon dioxide being release by humans per year.
That works out to 950 tons per second. Now I know, in the big picture, that rush of gas ( I like that phrase..... I think I will copy right that immediately!!") is only the equivalent of a roughly quarter mile diameter exhaust pipe releasing exhaust gas at hurricane force velocity...24 hours a day, 365 days per year.... but it is a graphic image to give you an idea of the amount of waste gas we are forcing into the atmosphere every second of the day, every day of the year, every year of the decade.

As to the weather 500 million years ago... you have to depend for that knowledge on..... scientists? And you believe them on the climate 500 million years ago.... but not on the climate for this decade....do you have any idea how funny that is????? :^))

Look, why don't you google something on earth science at a level you are comfortable reading at, and come back after you have read about , at a minimum, Milankovitch cycles and ice ages.

Unless, of course, you are a petroleum mis-information specialist who makes your living at this in which case, I don't want to stand between you and a chance to feed yourself.

Cheers.

"90 million tons of carbon"

First of all, carbon is the chemical basis of all known life.

"Five hundred million years ago carbon dioxide was 20 times more prevalent than today"

Guess it must have been all those oil factories and SUV's running around......

ok, I'll explain my post.

"90 million tons..." That's part of someone else's post.
"Carbon is the..." That's pure fact.
"Five hundred million..." That's a quote from Wikipedia.
"Guess it must..." That's sarcasm.

Please, enlighten me on how much you know about everything and how little I know about anything. Given the fact that you have based your assessment of my scientific grasp on the above comments, I can hardly contain my excitement while awaiting your response.

Thank you for your response. I, too, apologize for my "soapbox". My original comment was meant for a poster (like the one you described). I was attempting to get him/her to think about the statement he/she made regarding 90 million tons of carbon being pumped into the air while using that as proof of man-made global warming. From what I've read on the subject, excessive co2 is the issue, not simply carbon. From my understanding, carbon itself is not dangerous unless it is in the form of fine dust from coal or diamonds, or is mixed with another element. The second and thrid statements were to another poster who uses the typical "excessive carbon dioxide by man" sound bites to prove man-made global warming. To my knowledge, there were no humans 500 million years ago and yet the co2 levels were 20 times higher than they are today. Thank you for asking for my meaning, and will try harder in the furture to post my comments with more thorough information. Looking back, I should have "replied" to each poster. Maybe that would have put them into better context.

The next person that says the rapture is coming is going to make me throw up. Global warming is here, and proof is in the melting ice caps. The weather gets hot some summers, and cold some summers. This is not global warming but a natural occurance in the overall change in our seasons. Did everyone forget the huge black out around 9 years ago? The weather was so hot, the electrical grid couldn't handle the overload. It was just as hot then as now and no one was screaming the end of the world or global warming. I wish everyone would just grab a mai tai, someone they love, head for the beach and enjoy.

I'm not sure how long ago, maybe 100 years or so, but New York City had a bad winter where horses were frozen standing up in snow several feet deep.

Do a little research about what is happening to the ecosystem around the world. About the air, water, soil, and climate pollution that has an adverse effect to what's going on, here on Earth.

American libs are the only ones foolish enough to fall for every ECO story they hear.....back 25 years ago it was the coming of the next ice age.......then it was the hole in the ozone layer.....now its the global warming myth!!!!!!!!! Do some real reseach.....if you dont fully understand the situation, youll fall for anything.........

WOW, there are actually several "comments" on here that are factually correct and make sense, as opposed to the Liberal lies and fabrications. The Libs don't want to hear, know or understand that the "alarmists" like Al Bore have a HUGE financial interest in the "Global Warming" HOAX!

OK folks, relax. Individual days of high temperatures are neither proof nor disproof of global warming. Global warming is about increase in AVERAGE temperatures over the course of the year and around the planet. Looking at individual days or even months in a single location (even a location as "large" as the US) is just not pertinent until you take in to account the rest of the year and the rest of the planet. Please note: I am not commenting on whether or not GW is real or not, only that transitory local temperatures are *almost* completely unrelated.

I would rather have the heat than blizzards and sub zero weather. Summer is great and goes to quickly.

Funny how record hot makes the climate change deniers kick into full denial mode, but snow storms are proof positive to them.

Did you ever hear about the great dust storms in the midwest that laster for several years then that winter they had ice storms.........By the way this happened 80 years ago.

I live in Bakersfield California, Don't lol. Over the years Bakersfield has been getting cooler. Just last week bakersfield was in the high 80's and low 90's in july doesn't happen. In July Bakersfield temperatures run from 97 to 108 some times higher. This is global warming I know Al Gore said global warming was real so it can't be true. But if George W Bush said global warming is real. Then we would be force to believe in global warming or be called a terrorist.

Sounds like Bakersfield is experiencing Bakerfield cooling. Has nothing to do with global warming.
10:30 AM on 07/18/2011
Hmm, nothing here other than reporting the weather. I know people froth at the mouth when an article hints at global warming, much the same as a Sarah PaIin witch hunt.

There is money to be made by scaring everyone, and the "intellectuals" on here fall for it every time. Your professor, Mr. Gore, just claimed that a few kilometers towards the earth surface is hotter than the sun. I advise you to send as much money to him as possible, right away.

Al Gore has nothing to do with the science. He writes books and gives lectures. Somebody out there sure hates Al, because everybody wants to come along and kick him. You all got that from somewhere, you didn't all think that up all by yourselves.
03:56 PM on 07/18/2011
Well, most people formulate their opinion from books and influential people like Al Gore. I'm hard pressed to think that they take the time to read scientific abstrats and journals. I'll give Al credit for inventing one thing, Global Warming.

If you think everyone is being unfair to Al, consider substituting Sarah Palin's name for Al Gore in your last post. Odd, isn't it?

That amount is a lie!!!!!!!!!! BTW for comparison the evil carbon contributed by humans makes up less than 2% of the total CO2 released by natural causes........sorry to ruin your story with the FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Learn some science. Mankind injects some 30 gigatons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. It stays up there for decades. It doesn't condense out like water vapor does.
Because it doesn't condense out, it accumulates in the atmosphere such that there is now 40% more of it up there than used to be before the industrial revolution. This leads to warming.

Sorry the polluters got you to lie for them.
10:39 AM on 07/18/2011
There is some truth to what you say, but we are just a part of the planet. People in other nations are more wasteful and they are not under the thumb of American regulation. If you look at the big picture, China is the biggest polluter on the planet and they don't take advice from anybody. Their 3,000,000,000 people will be the death of the world.
