TOMOHON, Indonesia — A volatile volcano in central Indonesia unleashed its most powerful eruption yet Sunday, spewing hot ash and smoke thousands of feet (meters) into the air and sending panicked villagers racing back to emergency shelters. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Mount Lokon, located on northern Sulawesi island, has been dormant for years but rumbled back to life late last week.

A series of overnight blasts Thursday and Friday claimed one life – a woman who suffered a heart attack as she fled.

But Surono, a government volcanologist who uses only one name, said Sunday's 10:35 a.m. eruption released the greatest amount of energy so far, shooting soot and debris 11,400 feet (3,500 meters) into the sky.

"We're hoping this helped ease pressure building up behind the magma dome and that we'll now start seeing a reduction in activity," he said. "But it's too early to know."

More than 33,000 people live along the slopes of Mount Lokon, taking advantage of fertile soil to grow cloves and coffee. About 5,000 of them with homes nearest to the crater have been relocated in recent days to schools, mosques and other makeshift shelters near the base.

Despite warnings that the mountain was still not safe, some had returned early Sunday to tend to their crops and their livestock.

The powerful explosion sent them racing back down the slopes, some jumping into cars and motorcycles, others rounded up by soldiers and police and escorted down in trucks.

"It was huge," said Henny Lalawi, who works as a picker for a coffee plantation. "It sounded like a bomb and then I saw the crater burst, sending ash high into the air. It was pretty awesome, really."

She said she'll have to go back when things settle down.

"It's only ash, after all, and I need the work."

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho from the National Disaster Management Agency said there were no reports of injuries or new deaths Sunday.

Airlines traveling within six miles (10 kilometers) of the peak were told to reroute their flights, but none have been canceled so far.

The nearby international airport in Manado also was operating normally, said Lucky Pondaag, an airport spokesman.

Mount Lokon is one of about 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Its last major eruption in 1991 killed a Swiss hiker and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 240 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanoes because it sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped string of faults that lines the Pacific Ocean.

Global volcanos, forrest fires, brush fires..............................how much have these events contributed to "global warming" or for that matter the significant changes in weather patterns?
09:19 PM on 07/18/2011
Volcanos emit relatively little CO2 compared to humans. Very large volcanic eruptions can cool the climate temporarily because of the sulfur dioxide droplets they contribute to the upper atmosphere.

Uh oh..another rise in coffee prices soon to rear its ugly head.

Pretty sure that was done by Frodo when he pushed Gollum into the pit with the Ring. That would most def. make a boom like that.

Where are the "DALMATION PUPPY" photos?Arianna would have had them at the top of the page. We miss the colorful Arrianna as "the Post" sinks down to a zero!

Impressive, scary. Yet humans emit 100-300 times as much CO2 and junk into the air as all the volcanoes on earth combined, and some fools deny that will change the climate.

You Lie! Go check with the USGS and it will tell you, you are exactly incorrect!
07:03 PM on 07/17/2011
I shall retract that. You are correct. The USGS will verify it. I apologize. Speed reading is dangerous at times.

Obama did it. He got his Indonesian friends and relatives to throw 'chunks' of US infrastructure, teachers, firefighters, and union members into the volcano to make it blow in order to justify new spending programs. Oh, wait a minute, that can't be, because Republicans are doing that in the name of deficit reduction. Never mind!

Regrets to Indonesia............riding on the back of 155 volcanoes can't be much fun :-)

maybe the teachers, firefighters, and union members are where the feet came from :)
08:28 PM on 07/17/2011
Hell, let them come to the US. Why not? We already have half of Mexico here.

Can someone explain this sentence ... "spewing hot ash and smoke thousands of feet (meters) into the air" ... I imagine if it was thousands of meters, it would in fact be thousands of feet, but not necessarily the other way around. One or the other would have been fine, but as written, it does not make good sense.
05:18 PM on 07/17/2011
Could have been real feet that spewed thousands of meters, but then we should have heard about all those poor creatures who lost their feet. Or it could have been meters of poetry or even music spewed thousands of feet, but would have made this a somewhat unique and fascinating event. Could be you're right and the author had to chose between feet and yards to satisfy an international audience, and chose feet rather than yards to meet more common forms of expression. In any event, to pick a nit, 11,000 ft is also thousands of meters :-)

Written by a liberal, no doubt. Facts and accuracy in syntax make no difference. People sign on to the emotional end of things and don't spend any time REALLY reading the statement(s). Except you, of course. It's how we ended up with Oblamer.
02:09 AM on 07/18/2011
Hmm, I'm a liberal and I'm very careful with words and figures. I have seen people of all political persuasions make dumb statements.

HP is particularly innumerate and appears to have no one with real scientific expertise on staff, but I think that's an HP problem, not a liberal problem.

Just another day in the life of the planet Earth. Another volcanic eruption in one place, another earthquake in another place.
03:49 PM on 07/17/2011
Al Gore should know about this at once!
08:32 PM on 07/17/2011
He does, he does. 100-300 times as much pollutants as volcanoes is what humans contribute to the climate change. That fact had to come from somewhere, and it surely wasn't from an intelligent human being. So, Algore is a good choice as the source.
