Rick Moranis' Classic Cover Of 'Turning Japanese' On SCTV (VIDEO)

Dangerous Minds posted a clip from this classic SCTV sketch earlier today, and we just had to track down the whole thing.

"The Gerry Todd Show," starring Rick Moranis as the titular character as well as cover song crooner Tom Monroe, was an "all-night televised radio" spoof featuring fake sponsors, weather reports and, yes, music videos. The various segments, featuring the rest of the SCTV ensemble, shockingly anticipate the coming of MTV, and frankly Internet culture.

But our favorite part of this may simply be watching Gerry Todd work his AV board, repeatedly bringing up the logo for the show and controlling the other graphics. It's a subtle touch, underlining the question, "Why would anyone watch this?"

The 'Turning Japanese' and 'Da-Doo-Doo-Doo' song segments were shot in Mayfair Park in Edmonton, Alberta. This would have been in the late 70s. SCTV was produced and shot in Edmonton by an independent station, ITV, before the show moved to Toronto.

On a show where there were no dud performers, it's high praise to say that Rick was my 2nd favourite (Catherine was first).

Great video amazing how much Moranis sounded like 1960s lounge lizards Jack Jones and Jerry Vale.

SCTV- that was comedy gold. Some of the best spoofs out there.

Rick Moranis is one of the funniest and nicest people I've ever worked with. Here's a very ahead of its time sketch we did with Ken Finkleman on a pilot for CBC TV a long time ago. You won't need to get the Canadian references but if you do you'll love it even more:

Finally got to it by using the search bar...that was an excellent clip. You all look so young!

And yes, Moranis is a mighty nice guy. I have always liked the Gerry Todd clips since they are pretty accurate for the time (think "The All Night Show")
