Bald Eagle Saved By Oregon Vet's Mouth-to-beak CPR

Eagle Cpr

07/16/11 03:31 PM ET   AP

BEND, Ore. -- A Bend, Ore., veterinarian has performed life-saving CPR on an injured bald eagle that was under anesthesia during physical therapy.

KTVZ-TV reports Jeff Cooney performed the therapy, during which the bald eagle nicknamed "Patriot" stopped breathing. Cooney's "mouth to beak" resuscitation got the eagle breathing again.

The injured eagle was found by two La Pine women near Crane Prairie Reservoir in June. The eagle had suffered, among other injuries, a dislocated shoulder and paralyzed right leg.

Cooney says it's uncertain whether he will be able to return the bird to the wild. If the bird's foot doesn't improve in the next three weeks, Cooney says he could be forced to euthanize him.

I hope to God they don't euthanize this beautiful bird. If they can't fix his feet, can't they keep him as an educational animal or send him to some other animal welfare group for the same purpose?

No no! Don't euthanize him. Get him a bird wheelchair or something. Christ, man. Be creative.

Why euthanize him?

What about being a "bird ambassador" at a local sanctuary, zoo or other facility?

There are facilities that will take injured animals and give them a home for live such as the Moonridge Animal Park in Big Bear California. Sad to destroy this eagle when other opportunities exist. Hope they will look into this. At this facility, creatures that cannot be returned to the wild are used for education and many often go to schools so children can see and learn about them. Great story for sure.

because this eagle has an injured foot, doesn't mean it may have to be euthanized. if it had major internal injuries, i could see it, but not for just a hurt foot.

I did CPR on a cat once when I was an EMT in St Louis, we used a cannula to provide a little extra O2 after it was revived. I used to get Christmas cards from the owner every year with a photo of the cat, but she died(the cat) in 2005.

There's a great place called VINS (Vermont Institute of Natural Science) in Quechee, VT that rehabilitates birds such as golden eagles, bald eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls. Some are able to lead their lives back in the wild, but there are many who remain permanently @ VINS - but with a high quality of life. The staff takes great care of the birds and tries to educate the public of the importance of preserving wildlife.

It sounds like the perfect place for this bald eagle. I hope the vet finds a place like VINS that will take care of and heal him. I hope so.

Okay, now how many people can honestly claim they've locked lips--er--beaks?--with a bald eagle.

You do what you have to do. Good going, vet.

Brilliant writing. The headline and description in the first paragraph say that the bird was given "life-saving CPR". Then, in the second paragraph, ""mouth to beak" resuscitation". Aren't those two different things? CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is rapid chest compressions.

I hope he pulls through and they can rehabilitate this beautiful raptor. Inasmuch as given mouth-to-beak? I dunno, I'd be afraid he'd wake up and, well, I kinda like having lips.
