BP Spill: Alaska Pipeline Ruptures, Methanol And 'Produced Fluids' Leak (UPDATE)

Bp Pipeline

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/18/11 03:31 PM ET Updated: 09/17/11 06:12 AM ET

A pipeline at a BP oil field in Alaska burst over the weekend, spilling between 2,100 and 4,200 gallons of an oily water and methanol mixture in Alaska's North Slope, reports Reuters and the Anchorage Daily News.

John Ebel, State of Alaska Environmental Program Specialist Emergency Responder, told The Huffington Post that the rupture occurred at an underground portion of the 8-inch pipe while workers were conducting a valve test.

SCROLL DOWN FOR BREAKING UPDATE

The Anchorage Daily News reports that people who were in buildings near where incident occurred could feel the ground shake from the force of the rupture.

Ebel said that the spill consisted of 60% methanol and 40% "produced fluids," which include crude oil, water, brine and other substances associated with oil production.

The spill affected about 2,000 square feet of aquatic tundra and nearly 5,000 square feet of a gravel pad, according to a report by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.

The spill occurred at a drill site in the Lisburne Production Facility, only 800 feet from Prudhoe Bay. The report says, however, that "there is no evidence that the released product has migrated away from the area adjacent to the pad."

From Reuters:

A BP spokesman said the cleanup was under way and the company would determine the cause "in due course."

Lisburne, which is managed as part of the Greater Prudhoe Bay Unit, has produced no oil since June 18, according to Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission records, suggesting maintenance work requiring a prolonged shutdown.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that 630 gallons of the spill had been collected as of Sunday afternoon. According to CNBC, no people or wildlife were hurt in the explosion.

In May, BP said it would pay $25 million as a penalty in a settlement over a 2006 spill in the North Slope.

UPDATE: 11:43 p.m. EDT

An earlier version of this post cited an incorrect ProPublica report which said that the rupture occurred on a portion of the pipeline that BP had previously marked as being corroded and at risk of failure and "presented an imminent threat of rupture."

ProPublica now reports that "when BP officials got back to ProPublica Monday night, they clarified that the pipeline which burst was not the same one previously flagged for urgent repair or replacement."

That's just 100 barrels - sounds much bigger and sexier to give it in gallons. Why not use quarts - 16,800 quarts of oil! WOW

How much oil does the earth ooze into the ocean every day, without and human involvement? C'mon you greenies - tell us how much.

How much arctic tundra is there? Is 2,000 square feet a lot? C'mon greenies - tell us how bad this is.

This is the link to a song I wrote over a year ago. The subject is BP and the oil disaster
in the Gulf of Mexico. What, this corporation just gets to go around the world
ruining the environment with no significant accountability? Give me a break.
Let their liability be what a person's liability would be, since
corporations want to be considered persons so badly.

Can we please look at alternative fuels now? Or do we have to completely destroy these areas first?

I don't know... Aren't these the same people that think windmills and solar roofing are 'UGLY'!?

Probably. Speaking of this- I live fairly close to a wind turbine farm, and a lot of the people who live next to the turbines started complaining when the county wanted to up the power on them. It would increase the ambience to about 55 decibels- which is as loud as a hearing people talk outside while you are inside. Cars driving by would make more noise. The turbines aren't even on all the time, either. So, I really don't understand their complaints- especially when the energy that comes from the turbines is so clean and beneficial.

2100-4200 gal actually means about twenty times that in BP speak.

Funny how Al Gore is so concerned with Global Warming or is it climate change this week and does not even comment about BP trying to pollute the entire planet with slick oily water. Can someone please tell me how BP can still be posting massive profits after these mishaps.

Sadly, we're far beyond that. The Deepwater Horizon disaster alone put nearly a quarter of a billion gallons of crude in the ocean.

Or were you saying a million separate spills? That, I fear is close to correct. Maybe it would be best to just sigh and admit that humans will probably allow themselves to become extinct over this issue if they have any choice in the matter.

Lord, what fools these mortals be.

I have a solar array that makes 120% of my power with zero leaks, my hybrid gets 50+ mpg here in Vermont. I will get an EV ASAP and use the 20% extra from my solar array to charge it.
Just trying to do my part.

then you are lucky you live in Vermont - here in California homeowners are urged to
install solar panels (at a cost of $70,000 for a single family house) So - people
took out a second mortgage and the power company will not let them connect
into the grid. Excuse: There are so many applicants, not enough time

I am sure that the price of oil will jump to a new price record? They use any excuse to profit!! My old house was 6,300 sq ft! The spill was less then the size of my old home.

Oh God!!!!
Environmental tragedy!!!!!
Assuming the worst of volume, 4200 gallons, that would be 2520 gallons of methanol. Methanol, you know, wood alcohol. Like any alcohol, it will evaporate. If it soaks into the ground, it's biodegradable and has a half life of about three days. In other words, if none of it evaporates, half of it will degrade into carbon dioxide and water within three days.
Then there's the "produce fluids". Water. Brine (that's salt water). Crude oil.
The worst is the crude. However, at the temperatures in the area (about 50 F), the crude will have a viscosity of about 10000 cp, thicker than molasses. If it gets into the gravel bed, a few dump trucks will take care of it.
Ignoring the condition of the pipe is a different animal altogether. If it's proven that someone at BP knew about the condition of the pipe and intentionally ignored it or delayed repairs, legal action against the people involved should be started immediately.

People are upset not because of the quantity, but because of repititious leaks, spills, and the general disregard for our water, land, and air. Although this is a small tree, it's part of a forest.

Hemp BIO-ENERGY
Hemp 6X more BTUS than Corn
Hemp uses less water no herbicides and little pesticides and fertilizer.

Subbituminous coal is common in the US. It has an energy content of about 18 million Btu per ton, and is used mostly in coal-fired power plants

Coal generates about half of the electricity used in the United States. ... Each person in the United States uses 3.8 tons of coal each year.

Some 965 million tons of coal were consumed for the generation of electricity. This amounted to 86% of total U.S. coal production

U.S. soybeans 76.6 million acres

U.S. corn 90 million acres

Half of the acres 83.3 million acres

Hemp yields an average of nine dry tons per acre
(more in southern areas)

749 million tons hemp fiber

Bio-diesel Hempoline can be made from leaves and stalks.

You would also have the hemp seeds as a food source too.

U.S. annual anhydrous ammonia 22.90 million tons used.

U.S. ROUND-UP use100 million pounds
Contaminated with 1,4 dioxane

HERO-INSECTIDE SYNGENTA INSECTICIDE Soybeans and corn

Keep it up you oil companies!! And you will have spOILed another fragile world.And..with the nukee stuff spewing out...It is like the plan to kill off the planet for the present existing Life forms is going according to plan. How many disasters is enough? At this point I call for a time out, so We can catch up on fixing the existing ones.

Don't worry, they are only trying to kill the "carbon based" life forms. The others will be fine...

British Spilltroleum. I know I'll offend someone, but the Brits are about as good at oil as they are at building cars. Both leave a lot of oil on the ground.

I resent that comment.
I had a 1976 Austin Marina that never left a drop of oil on the ground.
It leaked it all onto the exhaust manifold and burned it off.
