New York City Teaching Gay Marriage In Summer School, Seeking Formal Curriculum Inclusion

Gay Marriage New York

First Posted: 07/18/11 04:13 PM ET Updated: 09/17/11 06:12 AM ET

California may have passed the legislation, but New York has already hit the ground running. Summer school teachers in New York City are already teaching about same-sex marriage in civics classes, according to the New York Post.

Not only that, but the Post reports that city education officials are looking to follow in California's footsteps and formally include it into city schools' curriculum. A timeline was not reported.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that legalized same sex marriage just less than a month ago. New York became the sixth state to permit gay marriage.

California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill Thursday that makes the state the first in the country to mandate lessons in public schools about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender life and history.

Will the New York State curriculum then mandate that religious schools teach this as part of the State curriculum or be afforded an exemption from this overt example of social engineering???

I have a four year old and I know at some point she will know about homosexuality, but she is in a household with a man and a woman, so I would like to be the one to tell her about it myself in a private and sensitive way.I'm already teaching her about the differences in all of us. She's a very smart little girl and I want her to be tolerant of others, and not be hateful base on "societal norm" of others ideas to who's right or wrong. However somethings are mine and mine alone to teach, or tell my child

Atwill, r u Really PROUD of having a Gay son or r u just trying to appease Yourself and be PC? I don't think having a Gay kid is something to Celebrate. When you meet new people and they ask about your kids do u inform them right then that UR the Proud father of a Gay SON?

So you would be so ashamed of your prospective "gay kid" that you would drive him or her out of the house to get by as best they can living on the street? Or would you try to "beat the gay" out of them so that they'd "learn a lesson or two" before they run away to try and get by as best they could on the street. Or maybe send him or her to a bogus pray-the-gay-away "recovery center" that would, likely as not according to anecdotal research, cause longterm psychological problems? Or maybe you'd just resort to emotional torture, like not answering the phone when your child called, or changing the locks on the door, or mocking him or her in front of other family members, or forcing him or her to "act gay" in front of the company, or purchasing a birthday present that was obviously designed for the gender the child is not (like a pink party dress for your 8 year old son, to be opened in front of all his friends). Which would it be, leagen?

This person's energy would be better spent in a remedial writing course. Not only homophobivc but borderline incoherent.

My dear departed mother unabashedly mentioned me and my partner just easily as she mentioned my brothers and their spouses.

No reason to hold back that I'm in a same-sex relationship -- but, then again, there's no reason to make that your number one topic of discussion, just as she would not make my brothers' heterosexual relationships a number one topic of discussion either.

And, yes, my mother was proud of both me and my partner.

It's not about "celebration" -- it's about treating straight and gay children with equality, respect, and dignity.

That's not PC. That's just doing the right thing.

Get involved by contacting your local school board, councilman and school chancelor.--failing schools, violence and other problems and they're wasting our money on this ?Tthey ALREADY teach on alternative" lifestyles.

You have nothing to worry about on that score -- homosexuality isn't a "lifestyle."

this has more to do with pushing a social agenda rather than purusing a policy of formal education...usually, such reforms would take time as the material would be vetted, peer reviewed, and approved as its way through a process...

Had these public educators invested as much time and energy into teaching kids math science-related subjects with the same level of dedicated exuberance as they implemented this new curriculum, I'm certain our kids wouldn't be as far behind as they are now...

---signed disappointed...

They've certainly invested much more time into teaching kids math and science. But gay marriage is certainly a current topic that's much debated, and absolutely should be covered in a high-school civics class. This is really a non-issue.

If you're seriously interested in problems in the elementary and secondary school system in this country, the film Waiting for Superman is excellent. It's available through Netflix and the Red Box kiosks and likely elsewhere; it won a lot of awards when it was released last year. Truly an eye-opening documentary.

I really appreciate the pro-gay symbolism you're representing leagen
By writing like a mentally retarded four year old while speaking against the LGBT community you are doing a great job of showing that the views themselves are just as ridiculous. Especially in contrast to the fact that the pro-LGBT crowd is using proper grammar and logical arguments.

Did you know there are many straights who are for gay rights? why are you against it? Teaching these thigns can only help stop discrimination.
06:31 PM on 07/18/2011
Will they be teaching gay divorce or will that still be just for straights?

We straights can teach that course. Heterosexuals are experts on it.
