Creative Frontiers School Sex Abuse Allegations Shock Calif. Parents

JUDY LIN   07/19/11 10:28 PM ET   AP

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The principal of a private school in Northern California remained out of sight Tuesday as additional details emerged about allegations that he touched young girls inappropriately for years and that at least one staff member was aware of his activities but failed to tell authorities.

A complaint filed by the Department of Social Services stated that several female students said they had been touched by Robert B. Adams, principal and founder of Creative Frontiers School in the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights.

"On numerous occasions, respondent Adams touched female children's bodies under their shirts and down their pants," the complaint said.

It went on to say that Adams – whom students referred to as "Mr. Bob" – also would "seclude female children under a computer desk and lie down with them on a mat in his office."

Adams could not be reached Tuesday at the school, where five horses roamed a pasture and a large playground was surrounded by red, cottage-like classrooms, or at his home in Folsom, where white garbage bags had been taped to windows on the side of the front door in an apparent attempt to prevent people from looking in.

Shades were closed at the yellow, two-story house with a wraparound front porch.

Police said Adams was the focus of the investigation but had not been arrested.

"I have to point out Mr. Adams is not under arrest and an arrest warrant has not been issued," Citrus Heights police spokesman Jon Kempf said. "Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation, we want to move slowly and cautiously."

Kempf said there were more than 10 children involved but declined to say exactly how many or if they were part of the campus pre-school or elementary school.

He said police had served search warrants and seized evidence from Adams' home and from the school that's attended by about 180 students.

Some of the alleged incidents dated back 15 years, police said.

Adams' attorney, Linda Parisi, said her client was saddened by the accusations.

"We're absolutely shocked. These are completely unfounded and we're confident that it will be clear when the investigation is over there is no foundation to the accusations," Parisi said.

She said with the exception of one disgruntled employee, there has never been a sustained complaint made against Adams or the school, which he founded in 1975.

On Tuesday, the campus was deserted, with a sign posted on the office saying the school had been closed by the state. Swim towels had been left hanging to dry on a wire fence near the pool, and a sign-in sheet for parents dangled on a clipboard.

A former receptionist, Irma Mertens, 62, told The Sacramento Bee that she made five calls to the state before investigators took her complaints seriously. She said she quit her job in May and gave police a spiral notebook filled with notes of everything she had seen.

No one answered the door at Mertens' home Tuesday afternoon when The Associated Press sought comment.

The Department of Social Services complaint listed an office administrator, Cynthia Higgins, as being aware of some of the allegations but failing to report anything to authorities. Attempts by the AP to reach Higgins were unsuccessful, and telephone messages left at the school over two days were not returned.

Parents said they were surprised by the allegations against Adams. Some were posting messages of support on the school's Facebook page.

Parent Cristina Azocar said outside the school that she found the allegations difficult to believe.

"I didn't have any bad feelings about him," said the 43-year-old mother, whose 3 1/2-year-old son had been in a summer daycare program at the site before it was closed.

"I actually thought he was pretty nice. The kids seemed to be attached to him and that was one of the things that sold me on the school," she said.

Others said they were reacting cautiously until more information comes to light.

Shannon Panora was shocked to be greeted by police officers on Monday, when she arrived at Creative Frontiers to pick up her 5-year-old son from daycare. Even if the school reopens, she said she would not send her son back to the campus.

"Whether or not Mr. Adams is guilty or innocent, I can't take that chance with my son. I can't," she said. "And it's not fair to my son's health and safety."

Creative Frontiers School serves children in preschool up to sixth grade and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Tuition to attend for a full school year is $6,507, according to the website.

The campus is located in a middle class, suburban setting, about 20 miles northeast of the state capital has

A rally in support of Adams had been planned by his daughter Tuesday afternoon at the school, but it was postponed.

The school's website says Adams was honored in 2008 as administrator of the year by the Professional Association for Childhood Education, a nonprofit organization for early childhood educators and professionals.

How do you know when it's nap time at the Creative Frontiers School?

When the big hand touches the little hand.

I find this very difficult to believe. My triplets went to Creative Frontiers and my daughter was friends with Bob Adams' daughter. He's a warm, caring man who loves children, but he runs a private school, not a charity, and pisses people off sometimes when they don't like his business decisions. I remember there was a huge gossip/back stabbing thing going on back when he was asking for support from staff and parents to expand and have the pool built to start the swim program. It's amazing how childish grown-ups can be when they don't get their way.

This sounds like more of the same. What better way to hurt a family man whose whole life and livelihood is about children? The man hasn't even been charged with a crime, yet is being crucified simply because he's been accused with no evidence to support the allegations.

Bob Adams and the entire Creative Frontiers family have my support and gratitude for their hard work and service to my children.

The writers seriously couldn't come up with a better headline than that? I mean, seriously, what is the likelihood that parents are not going to be shocked by an allegation of sexual abuse at their kid's school? C'mon! Let's get create here. Find a parent that's not shocked and write a story about that parent.

WOW, this mother is defending the school. This guy can't be an alleged peophile because the kids seem attached to him and he was 'pretty nice' to a woman who was deciding on whether to send her CHILD there. The police ignoring the whistleblower is just one more reason I am not a fan of privately owned and operated schools.

Well it is 4am and after hearing this news I can't sleep. My son now 14 years old attended Creative frontiers from Preschool to 1st grade. I am shocked, this is a school that was also a before and after daycare for our children. I just can't see Mr Bob doing this, although im not denying that something odd could of happened. I never remember going into the office and him being in there alone. He did not have a private office. The children that may become sick laid in the office on mats until we could get there. Plus his teachers were wonderful. My sons preschool teacher was instrumental in some of his passions now. I am in shock. Until more information comes out, I choose not to believe the accuations. I was molested in preschool and remember it profoundly. I just need to see the proof....

I'm always shocked at this abuses at schools, but even more shocked at the people who don't report it and cover it up. They are just as guilty.

I have no information beyond this article but I would wager this guy did nothing wrong. I remember a case here in San Diego where the guy's character was completely assasinated and by the time a jury aquited him of all charges the deputies at the jail bought the defendent a limo ride home.

So even with all the evidence presented in the article, you still think this guy is innocent because of one case in another city?

There was a similar case at the same time (1990's). Orange County CA had one and there were more around the country I do not recall where. All of the cases had the same setup. One woman made explicit and seemingly credible charges. Local media sensationalized the charges and reported rumors as fact. In all of these cases, few people had any doubt about the guilt of the pervert involved. Then under rules of evidence the cases fell apart. The most damning evidence was overturned and the community became convinced that the the defendant had been completely railroaded. This guy might be guilty but my best guess is that he did not get away with molesting young girls for 35 years and it is likely he is the victim of bad judgement on the part of one employee.

That was the case regarding Dale Akiki.......the guy had severe body and facial deformations and spent two and a half years in the San Diego County jail on allegations of child molestation.... was subsequently acquitted on all charges then sued San Diego county and Jack Goodall of Jack In The Box restaurants for malicious prosecution as well as the two and a half year false imprisonment.....sued for 4 million dollars, settled for 2.5 mil....all this because he looked "strange" and the parents felt "uncomfortable"....see if I ever eat at another Jackass In The Box

May the world move closer to the day when we all can realize that our woman and children cannot wait until the war over there, this happening here, something else over there, and whatever else is happening someplace else is all cleared up before we get to the suffering, victimizing perpetrated upon them. Here in the US and all over the world! Blessings to the women and children of the world. Hang in there, it will get better.

no one would accuse falsly on such a thing???? guys, please, lets keep it real!!!.. a disguntled employee.. a pissed off ex wife or husband who wants revenge... a pissed off lover who feels scorned... a business competitor who wants to bring the other company to its knee's... or how about an angry teenager whos mother said no to going out.. kids are killing their parents and other kids all the time cause adults are running scared of kids these days.... or how about the fact, that once again, our government admits well over 50% of all adults who are accussed of such a thing, are arrested with no solid proof or evidance.
please... get a life people and realize, that an arrest does not mean guilt... as we are innocent until proven guilty.. i predict, that within another 10 years.. parents will have no rights at all... adults will be in total fear of children because our generation went over board like the salem mass witch trials.. remember the hysteria that kids created and accused many innocent men and women falsely?? they were burned at the stake just like adults are being ruined today. because in most states now, all it takes is an accusation. so those who are judging now. beware of the generation that follows you.. and never be alone with a child .. and dont piss your kids off.....

I like your post, but I think things will eventually change back to where the parents have more control and society will have to take a second look at what's happening with this today. It is out of control. We love our kids but we have to realize kids are lying today at an alarming rate to get what they want and as long as we have this "hero" mentality, it will get worse. There are many falsely accused doing time now. We have to protect kids but also realize that we can't go locking people up for accusations until convicted with evidence and not hearsay. If a child makes an accusation (sexual of course) that's all that's needed in a lot of cases. We have to stop convicting on feelings and go with evidence. Someone could steal a child's bike or other possessions with little recourse, but if it's anything sexual, we're done. I see skeletons in closets that need to be buried.

You know when I think about it I am so glad I got this wifi camera thing when I did. You have all this stuff going on in life and putting extra worry on something that you shouldn’t have to is the last thing we need. I can watch my house, kids and property right from my iPhone and that gives me the greatest peace of mind. It will literally send me a text saying something is moving in your house and I can log on right away and see what’s going on- mostly just the kids playing. But you never know especially when you have a stranger watching over your kids. It eases you just seeing the person doing the right- not because they know they are being watched (because they don’t) because it’s the right thing to do. So I seriously suggest checking out this company Spycameras.com. Http:// bit.ly/pvq3oc
P.S. they are very well priced and all the setup and support is free. They literally connect to your computer to set it up.

Well, either this is false accusation by a disgruntled employee or maybe a few parents. Or he crossed someone and they are getting back at him. Or.......

this is true. Problem is, we cannot take chances with our childrens safety. That should be the priority.
