Lewis D. Hostetler, Amish Teen, Arrested For Allegedly Drinking Beer In Horse And Buggy And Leading Police On Chase

There are hot pursuits, and there are trot pursuits.

After a short attempt at a hoof-powered getaway, an Amish teen who was allegedly spotted drinking beer in a horse and buggy was locked up by sheriff's deputies in Cattaraugus County, N.Y.

Deputies say they saw Lewis D. Hostetler, 17, holding an open can of beer inside his buggy on Route 62 at around 1 a.m. on July 18, The Buffalo News reports.

When the driver of the buggy refused to stop, police chased the carriage and apprehended the suspect, according to the paper.

Hostetler has reportedly been hit with a number of charges including resisting arrest, unlawful possession of alcohol, obstructing governmental administration, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, littering, and operating a vehicle without tail lights.

This isn't the first time an Amish teen in Cattaraugus County has galloped towards trouble with the law after allegedly drinking and driving an animal.

Last year, 17-year-old Levi Detweiler was arrested after he purportedly lead police on a one-mile chase until he took a turn too quickly and rolled over his buggy.

Do you really 'drive' animals though? Was the horse drunk too because really it's the horse doing the 'driving'. If you're drunk but your horse is sober I'd think it'd be okay.

I live in the heart of Amish country and they are a wild bunch. The women with their ankles showing, staying up past 8, buggy racing,barn raising and all of that obscene pie baking. Someone call the FBI.

I grew up in Amish country and this isn't that unusual a story. I can remember stories of vandalism by Amish kids drag racing their buggies through cornfields or racing bicyclists. And I can't count the number of times I found myself behind a buggy or cart with Amish teenagers, a portable radio blaring rock music or heavy metal, and all of them plastered 3 sheets to the wind. Kids will be kids. Even the Amish can't stop that truth. And don't even get me started on Rumspringa.
