Tribune

CHICAGO — A Chicago Tribune printing facility will soon turn out editions of its longtime newspaper rival the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Chicago Tribune Media Group announced the agreement Tuesday. The deal means that Sun-Times Media Productions has exited the print manufacturing and distribution business.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

The Sun-Times will move printing operations from its plant in the city to the Tribune's Freedom Center, which will print and package daily editions of the Sun-Times and seven of the company's suburban newspapers.

A Sun-Times spokesman says hundreds of jobs will be lost, while the Tribune will hire up to 100 people.

The Tribune's Freedom Center opened in 1982. The company has distributed some Sun-Times products since 2007.

How sad!

First Border's Books is selling all 400 stores, NASA is shutting down operations from the Space Shuttle Program, Cisco is laying off 6,500 people and now the Newspaper.

Here's what happens. Two papers in the same town- bad times for papers. Lets do both from one place! Sounds good. People by off. People are laid off. One year later, the weaker paper disappers. See Denver Post+Rocky Mountain News. See Seattle PI+Seattle Times.

Can't there be a (small, temporary) tax hike and a law forcing people to subscribe .And, I don't think recent emigres from the state should be exempt from this.

It does happen alot.

Nashville Banner and Tennessean had a similar deal. The Banner's gone now.

Come to think of it, I think the Sun-Times and Chicago Daily News once shared offices at one time. Now, no more Daily News.

Correct re: The Daily News because my Dad had to switch to the Sun-Times when the Daily News went out of business.
