Great White Shark Jumps Into Research Boat Off South African Coast

Researchers observing great white sharks on South Africa's Cape Coast ended up slightly closer to their subject than they probably hoped.

The team of scientists from Oceans Research was conducting a shark population study on Monday in the waters off Seal Island, located near Mossel Bay, when around 8:30 am, the waters calmed for about five minutes.

Dorien Schroder, team leader, described to the Cape Times what happened next: "Next thing I know I hear a splash, and see a white shark breach out of the water from [the] side of the boat hovering, literally, over the crew member who was chumming [throwing food bait] on the port side."

According to the Guardian, the nine-foot, half-ton shark found itself flailing across the vessel, destroying equipment and struggling to return to the water.

Researchers used a hose to keep the shark hydrated during the hour-long period before rescue workers could attend to the crew and return the shark to the water using ropes and a crane.

Perhaps if the research team had used music from AC/DC's "Back In Black" album -- shown to be preferred listening for great whites, according to an Australian study -- instead of fish bait to attract the sharks, they would have avoided the uninvited boat guest.

This isn't the first time a shark has startled humans with its jumping abilities. Just last month, a shark jumped out of the waves and over a surfer at New Smyrna Beach, in Florida. And a husband-and-wife photography team has spent years in Africa capturing images of the great white shark "flying" up to ten feet from the ocean to snatch its prey.

Great whites are amazing animals. They travel half way around the world on a regular "circuit" that includes the best times for eating seals at seal island, and other points of interest.

I wish we could tag them all, and use that tag to alert us when they are near, and perhaps irritate them so they go away. Killing them is not the solution.

I know someone who went out on a shark-watching tour in South Africa. The guide chummed the water and waited and waited and eventually announced that the sharks weren't cooperating and they'd head in. And THEN one of the critters leaped up and took a bite out of the gunwale about a foot where from where the woman's hand was resting. That was enough shark-watching for her, permanently.

It's lonely being a shark, he was just looking for a chum.

So now we aren't even safe in a boat. Only a matter of time before they start crawling up on the beaches to snag unsuspecting sun bathers.

They haven't evolved much in a couple hundred million years -- I think you're safe.

Bright shiney object entertains and amuses three Village Idiots.... Can you imagine anyone with any self-respect admitting on television that their "favorite" installment in the Jaws franchise was "Jaws - 3D?" The ignorance is palpable.

a shark can smell one drop of blood in a fifty million gallon aquarium. they do breech the top half of their bodies while lookin for prey, and a shark doesn't bite with ehe same PSI as a big cat (lion, tiger, leopard, etc) does. however, the reason ot seems so, is that it's teeth come together in a certain pattern which "tears" cleanly through it's prey.

Sharks are incredible animals. Unfortunately they are becoming endangered due to over fishing.
