Gwyneth Paltrow Says She'll Raise Children As Jewish

Gwyneth

After appearing on the television program, "Who Do You Think You Are," Gwyneth Paltrow has decided to raise children Apple, 7, and Moses, 5, as Jewish.

According to The Daily Mail, the NBC ancestry show sparked the discovery that the actress descended from a notable line of Eastern European rabbis. Though she's long practiced Kabbalah, Gwyneth had previously stayed neutral about a formal religion upbringing in her household, which includes crooner husband Chris Martin, who is of Christian background.

"I don't believe in religion. I believe in spirituality. Religion is the cause of all the problems in the world," the actress once told The Daily Mail.

Gwyneth also recently made news by opining on homosexuality and the Bible in a June 2011 GOOP newsletter.

"Sprirituality" IS religion, (though not necessarily a particular denomination).

I just hope she's serious about Judaism. Hollywood stars choose everything based on what is trendy and will get them the most publicity.

Did someone just say that religion is the reason for all the world's problems? Can someone to make that argument without resorting to logic fallacies or that silly "well its my opinion"? I doubt it.

What a lot of nosy people. How she chooses to raise her children is her business. She could choose to be a Pastafarian for all I care,

Since 1985 Reform Judaism recognizes patrilineal descent.

Since 1985 in Reform Judaism recognizes patrilineal descent. My mother was not formally converted to Judaism, although she drove my siblings and me to synagogue to Hebrew school and study for my Bar Mitzvah and participated in services and holidays. Yes I had a Bar Mitzvah and learned Hebrew and observed so how can I NOT BE JEWISH? There's too few of us around to begin with, Baruch Hashem if Gwyneth wants to raise her children in our ways.

I can't believe some of the dismissive remarks about her choice in faith on here!

She is choosing to carry on the faith of her father- Gweneth IS Jewish already, so I'm not sure why this is such a shock to people, that she would raise Apple & Moses to be the same.

Plus, what's everybody's hang-up with Judaism? Jews don't walk around door-to-door annoying people to convert to their religion, and they mostly keep to themselves!

What have the Jews done to any of you on here personally, that you would take *issue* with her choosing to raise her kids Jewish! It just doesn't make sense! And it seems to me, it's just more of the same "not liking Judaism... because it's Jewish". (lol) What other reasoning is there for all the complaining?

I'm sure if she had decided to raise her kids in the faith of her husband Chris Martin (Christianity), nobody would make a comment about it!

Get a life people... WHO CARES what she raises her kids as??

she is technically Jewish only if she converted since her mother was not Jewish. But is that's what she wants, I welcome her to the tribe

Correct me if I am wrong, but it my understanding that since the temple records were destroyed in about 70ce no one can be sure which of the tribes the should be a part of.

Nope, sorry Gwyneth is not Jewish merely because her father is. Judaiism is matrilineal, not patrilineal. If she wants to convert she can, but no one will make her do so. And being a follower of Kabbalah isn't a pathway to calling one's self Jewish, either.

I have seen people who will literally show someone thousands of Scriptures relating to why one should choose their concept of Christianity to find the best chance of finding Our Creator's approval. Have you ever noticed how the Jewish proselytize? It is an entirely different process, if you watch you can see it, or if you talk to someone who has been proselytized sometimes they will let you know why or how they got there. Life is for some an ever learning process. A saying I like is, "Learn each day like you are going to live forever, but live each day as if you knew you were going to die in your sleep that night and be judged by Our Creator for how you have lived".

Jews do not preach to non-Jews, only to non practicing Jews.

We don't proselytize, at all. That is not our thing.

If she wants to raise her kids Jewish, that's up to her. I just can't believe all these comments attacking and dismissing her decision. I don't think people here would be doing that if she decided to raise her kids Muslims

more like they would not be doing that if she decided to raise her kids athiest

It would be the same - people are just a bit tired of her me, me, me agenda - which would be fine, if she had something interesting to say.

Why not let then choose when they can. If they want to. I feel better not practicing the religion I was born into.

Never mind...it's only Gwyneth's talk.

It never makes much sense, bless her little socks.

I suppose people around her just smile and nod...

You'd have to ask her, I think. I'm guessing that she sees a rightful distinction between the organized religion and what she finds meaningful (the Spirituality).
