Big Talk's 'Katzenjammer'

The Killers' Drummer Goes Solo

When drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. of The Killers announced a solo project at the beginning of this year, we were a little concerned. We've heard stories of frontmen stepping away from the group and gaining success with their built-in celebrity, but the drummer? (The Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti being the exception, given his looks and frontman-like star status.)

With the release of his first single "Getaways," Vannucci gave us more than we bargained for. Promising a merge of classic American rock and electro-pop influences, Big Talk showcases the drummer's multi-instrumental talents. The album, which dropped Tuesday, is a bit like a lovechild between The Strokes' Julian Casablancas own solo album, "Phrazes for the Young," and Tom Petty's classic American ballads. Here's the first song off Big Talk's self-titled album called "Katzenjammer," which apparently is German for "cat's wail," and is meant to describe a "loud, discordant noise." We're not sure that's the most apt description of the song, but what do you think?
