Evolutionary Science Materials In Texas Get Preliminary Approval, Creationism Debate Fizzles

By JIM VERTUNO   07/21/11 09:21 PM ET   AP

AUSTIN, Texas -- An expected fight over teaching evolution in Texas classrooms fizzled Thursday when the state's Board of Education gave preliminary approval to supplemental science materials for the coming school year and beyond with only minor changes.

The Republican-dominated board drew national attention in 2009 when it adopted science standards encouraging schools to scrutinize "all sides" of scientific theory, a move some creationists hailed as a victory.

But Thursday's unanimous vote diffused the expected renewal of that debate. A final vote is scheduled Friday and even though the board still can make changes before then, member David Bradley, R-Beaumont, predicted few fireworks would erupt.

"Somebody might want to refund their tickets," Bradley said after the vote. "There wasn't a fight."

The public hearing was dominated by witnesses encouraging the board to adopt the materials that had been recommended by state Education Commissioner Robert Scott.

One that didn't make the recommended list was an electronic textbook that includes lessons on intelligent design, the theory that life on Earth is so complex it was guided with the help of an intelligent higher power.

"There's no bad science going into classrooms" in the approved materials, said Dan Quinn, spokesman for the Texas Freedom Network, a group that sides with mainstream scientists on teaching evolution.

The new online teaching materials are necessary because the state could not afford to buy new textbooks this year, leaving students to use some that are several years old. Supplemental materials that are approved have the advantage of being on the state's recommended list, but school districts can still buy other materials they chose.

The board instructed two publishers to make changes to some biology materials that used drawings of embryonic similarities between species. The board said more accurate photographs should be used instead.

Another publisher was instructed to make changes to a section that compared human and chimpanzee skulls. The publisher's written response disputed that its material was wrong, and it has the choice of changing the section or withdrawing its material altogether.

Board Chairwoman Barbara Cargill, R-The Woodlands, a former biology teacher who disputes evolution, and Bradley said there was little debate among board members because the materials met the standards set in 2009.

"The supplements are good," Cargill said.

One conservative group, Texans for a Better Science Education, had put out a call to pack Thursday's public hearing with testimony urging board members to adopt materials that question evolution. But they were outnumbered by witnesses urging the board to adopt the materials with few changes.

"I don't want my children's public school teachers to teach faith and God in a science classroom," said the Rev. Kelly Allen of University Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. "True religion can handle truth in all its forms. Evolution is solid science."

The public testimony got off to a heated start. One of the first speakers, Tom Davis of Austin, urged the board to ignore any materials that deal with creationism or intelligent design.

"Intelligent design is creationism, wrapped in thin veneer of pseudoscience," Davis said. "Creation isn't really science at all. It's philosophy."

Sensing that repeated attacks on religion were to come, board member Ken Mercer, R-San Antonio, offered anyone in the audience $500 if they could find any reference in the state science standards to "Jesus or God."

"It's just not there," Mercer said.

The tone of the debate quickly settled down from there.

David Shormann of Magnolia, who runs a Christian-based math and science education software company, said evolution has too many "untestable" components and can't provide a real look at ancient life without a "time machine or a crystal ball."

But Lorenzo Sadun, a math professor at the University of Texas, said those opposing evolution overstate gaps in the fossil record and other areas when trying to discredit the theory.

"The theory of evolution is based on almost as much evidence as the theory of gravity," Sadun said.

Have any of you recently discovered the recipe that proves that life began from some chemical reaction? To believe in one or the other is nothing more than believing in one miracle over another. The odds of either are so astronomical I'm sure it's a number I couldn't even pronounce or for that matter have ever even seen. So, for one side to bash the other side into submission is a bit ridiculous. When my life is over death will be a much more peaceful experience having had the lord in my life. In the same breadth, evolution fascinates me and believe in some of it with an open mind. The part I don't get is how you mix a few chemicals together in some primordial stew and produce something as complicated as life from the non-living. If you are going to go that far you might as well believe in God, at least there's a textbook.

It's understandable how so many Texans have trouble accepting evolution, as there's so little evidence of it in the state. Neanderthals and humans were for a time contemporaries, and sometimes interbred; it's said the Neanderthals died out but I posit that they still walk among us and hold high positions in Texas government.

The fact that we are even debating the teaching of creationism is depressing enough.

I don't know if this is a good idea guys, teaching evolution in Texas is sure to be a sign of the coming Apocalypse. Though in all seriousness, since both theory’s require a little bit of faith (well creationism requires A LOT of faith) I never understood how the creationists defend their view as right without coming off terrible hypocritical.

It’s a big universe and we are one life form, why is it not visible God created Evolution as sort of the greatest reality show in existence.
03:00 PM on 07/24/2011
No faith is required for evolution because evolution doesn't require that anything be "believed," per se. Evolution is simply the best model we have to fit the current data. Anyone who wants to propose an alternate model is free to do so, but it has to fit the data better than evolution does. Thus far, nothing of the sort has happened.

Creationism is NOT a scientific theory. Evolution requires NO faith.
Our public education system is failing us.

"why is it not visible God created Evolution as sort of the greatest reality show in existence"

Anyone could come up with an unlimited number of possibilities all of which are just as valid as your god doing it. You are merely looking for someone to agree that it is a possibility, to validate your beliefs.

Apparently they never did get along. You'll notice that Noah conveniently "forgot" to pack up pairs of all the dinosaurs, even though he must have had plenty of space on his Ark.

When are the religious going to realize that evolution does not disprove the existence of God, nor is it the founding doctrine of atheism? The only way evolution disrupts Christianity is if you believe every word of the Bible is the literal truth.

I wonder what kind of explanation creationist have for the existince of the Neanderthal people. We know they existed, we have discoverd their gravesites, where they buried their dead with artifacts from their culture. They were not human biengs. They were a completley diffirent species of humanoid that died out around 10-15,000 years ago. They are the proverbial elephant in the room to creationist because they have no explanation for them.
12:01 AM on 07/24/2011
If you could create a universe right now would that prove or disprove Creationism? If you state the act itself is impossible as well as the science behind it then we will NEVER be able to do it. To explain my view better lets take the burning bush... How would I do it? Simple a 3D hologram so advanced that the mind is convinced it is real & therefore the viewer reacts as if it were hit. The 5000 fes with 2 loaves of bread & a fish One of two ways. One Two dimensional "pots" that held 5000 loaves & 5000 Fish OR alter time in that location so that the SAME three items reappear. If you consider these as FACT we are talking some EXTREMELY advanced science. so to answer your Question They were the Evolutionary part of Creation. Evolution Creates Diversity in Creation. If you toss an elephant into an empty room was it always in that room? your religion says YES. I say someone put it there.
12:46 PM on 07/24/2011
But isn’t creationism the idea that one all powerful force created everything? If you created a universe to disprove creationism you would in turn be that creator. In the end EXTREMELY advanced Science and magic are only different based on the viewer’s understanding and knowledge. Your point makes sense, the wording not so much.

I simply can not believe people still use the "We didn't evolve from monkeys" argument!

IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT EVOLUTION YOU WOULD KNOW THAT HUMANS DID NOT EVOLVE FROM MONKEYS.

The Theory of evolution is very clear about this. We share common ancestors. if you don't understand the difference you need to go back to school.

This image will make it very clear why we did NOT evolve from monkeys:
http://img.timeinc.net/time/covers/1101010723/images/apes_timeline1.gif

If you want to argue against evolution at least watch this short video. So you can at least argue based on facts instead of wrong assumptions.

03:03 PM on 07/24/2011
It's called "willful ignorance." People don't WANT to know what evolution is about because that would require them actually learning something.

I said in bold: " IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT EVOLUTION YOU WOULD KNOW THAT HUMANS DID NOT EVOLVE FROM MONKEYS. "

DID NOT evolve from monkeys.

Reading is indeed fundamental. I guess you just proved that once you have made up your mind about something or someone it really is hard to actually comprehend what you are reading.

Right now, tonight, in medical labs across the planet, medical researchers are trying to fight the evolution of simple bacteria that are infecting medical patients in every hospital on the planet, killing hundreds of thousands of them. These bacteria are evolving with defenses against the antibiotics man can invent at a furious pace, rendering our efforts to stay ahead of them useless.

Evolution goes on right under your noses and the vast majority of the humans living in some kind of magic kingdom fantasy land are far too stupid and ignorant to notice it. They cling to a fantasy dreamed up by really ignorant fishermen and goat herders thousands of years ago when a sick child was slit open to "let out the evil spirits" and left to die in the desert. They still believe in the same boogieman sky pilot the goat herders thought they saw in the pitch black of night and dream of dragging us BACK into that simpleton world of evil spirits.

How sad it has come to this.....

Reality & Life Is Less Then A Second Away
08:01 PM on 07/22/2011
People that do not believe Gods Word, (unbelievers), do not believe because they do not believe God Loves us, and Created the complete future, the complete past, and most importantly, that God is Everlasting. Unbelievers’ do not understand that God immediately has control over every last second into infinity, and that God can immediately and instantly change any part of any reality. Unbelievers’ do not understand that our existence (men) is the only anomaly in this current reality. Every second that passes, is frozen in time and infinite, and is immediately accelerated to our current movement that we perceive as normal. {Infinite combinations) We all should kiss the Ground we live and step on, because the Soil and everything upon it, is Lovingly Blessed and Created by God. Teaching evolution in schools and not referring to God, is like brainwashing students to believing only in science, the most unpredictable and unreliable theory in existence.

Reality & Life Is Less Then A Second Away
07:41 AM on 07/23/2011
This is what you are missing in your intelligence, read it and keep it deep inside your mind please.
God the Creator, who made the Heaven and the Earth, and all things that are therein, and to demonstrate that there is nothing either above Him or after Him; nor that, influenced by any one, but of His own free will, He Created all things, since He is the only God, the only Lord, the only Creator, the only Father, alone containing all things, and himself commanding all things into existence.

The Holy Spirit calls the Father “Most Highâ€, “Almightyâ€, and “Lord of Hostsâ€, so that we may learn that God truly is the Creator of Heaven and Earth. These names tell us not only that He made the whole World, but Angels and humans as well, and that He is Lord of all, who sustains all things. The one God is omnipotent and therefore He does not need Angels or other inferior deities to help Him with the Creation of the World. Creation is absolutely dependent upon God who existed before the making of the World. Creation was conducted by God out of nothing and cannot exist separated from God.

Cool aid? Look deep inside your mind, it is endless and limitless, unlike your your outer self destructive knowledge.

{Part 1 of 4}
There are three truths in existence, only three types of luminous knife stabbings that we plunge in materialism and obvious obstacles, so that we may possibly force them to reveal their mysteries.
One is the scientific truth is science, science relies on criticism, on theory, on experiments, on criticized corroboration, on criticized motion. The truth of yesterday is the oppression of today, no stable ground whatsoever, constant rookie, ever-changing solutions, constant grabbing of false positive glory, elevated and false positive acts on human logic, constant and false positive pragmatic theory and solutions, constant and obvious war of process of elimination.
The today that denies the yesterday and the tomorrow that denies the today.
Fraudulent amazement, delusional progress, constant change and replacement of facts.
No rest, no ending to misleading solutions, no resolve, no repentance of breathing.
The scientific truth is intertwined in an agnostic thromboembolism.
Auto detachment of time and pure unsteadiness.
Unrestored and seismic, weak or non existent steadiness on the unexpected humanity.
