James Brown Impersonator Is Subject Of New Photo Exhibit

James Brown

When photographer Kelsey Bennett first saw James Brown impersonator Black Velvet’s act last summer, she knew she’d found her next subject. ā€œWhen you see him perform he just kind of splits open the room,ā€ she says. ā€œHe has so much passion in his performance, and it’s like he’s channeling James Brown’s spirit.ā€

Bennett was enrolled in a workshop with the Pulitzer Prize-winning lensman David Turnley at the time, and her next assignment was to spend a week photographing a stranger. After watching Black Velvet (otherwise known as Charles Bradley) take the stage at Tip Top Bar & Grill, a club in her friend’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood known for its popular soul nights, she approached the singer and proposed the project. ā€œHe didn’t skip a beat and said, ā€œDo you think that this will make people happy?ā€™ā€ she recalls.

The resulting images -- 10 framed shots supplemented with smaller 8x10 snapshots of Bradley’s private life -- will be on view at the Christopher Henry Gallery in Soho starting tonight and running through August 14.

In addition to shooting three Black Velvet shows, Bennett spent time at Bradley’s mother’s home, where she was able to connect with the performer on a more personal level. ā€œIf you have a camera in front of your face, you’re not making eye contact with someone,ā€ she explains. ā€œI think it’s really important to be face to face with the person so they know you’re not just there to capture them; you’re there to know them and you care about gaining their trust, which I genuinely do.ā€

Bennett says one of her favorite shots was taken just after Bradley had finished showing her his elaborate hand-sewn costumes, which include sequined capes stitched together from thrift-store evening gowns. ā€œHe has his arm propped up against the closet door and his gold cape thrown over his shoulder, and there’s something in his expression... you can tell that he trusts me and that he’s happy that I’m there doing what I’m doing.ā€

She also notes that re-creating Tip Top’s convivial atmosphere for gallery goers with a video installation was a key part of the project. ā€My first experience there changed my life, in a certain way. We’re building a stage, putting the same tiles on the ground, and I have a recorded performance that’s going to be projected on top of the stage as if he’s playing.ā€

Working on the exhibit deepened Bennett’s own appreciation for the Godfather of Soul. ā€I always liked James Brown, but seeing how much Charles loves him made me buy more records and want to know more about him. Charles saw James Brown play for the first time at the Apollo in 1962 and he describes it as if he was being brought into a different world.ā€ Bradley went home that night, at age 16, tied a string to a broomstick, and practiced Brown’s signature mic-stand-whipping moves.

This summer Bradley, now 62, will open for Stevie Wonder at the Hollywood Bowl (under his own name). ā€œCharles has spent that long being so dedicated to his craft and to what these other artists have done, like Sam Cooke and James Brown and Otis Redding and all the great people who have inspired him," says Bennett. "And that’s kept him going.ā€

Bennett, the granddaughter of legendary crooner Tony Bennett, hopes that the images will resonate with viewers’ own musical devotion. ā€œJames Brown changed his life and we all know what it’s like for music to define our lives,ā€ she says. ā€œBut it’s the whole package. It’s not just the music, it’s something else that we relate to as well. It’s the image, this icon which ultimately touches us.ā€

As a former fiance' of the Godfather (1995-1996), I suggest Mr. Bennett enjoy his talents wrapped up in his own persona & identity. It strikes me as a little pitiful and sad, not to mention restrictive, to base your career and identity on imitating someone else. Good luck Mr. Bennett -- I'm sure James is getting a kick out of all the impersonators and appreciates those of us who are keeping his memory alive. You can see me with James on YouTube in the movie, "Soul Mates". There's also an online scrapbook of our '96 European tour.

Gee whiz ! You need to re-read this article, because the impersonator's name is Charles Bradley, not Mr. Bennett ! ( the woman, who interviewed Black Velvet, aka Charles Bradley, was Kelsey Bennet ( granddaughter of famous singer Tony Bennett ). By the way Charles Bradley does perform under his own name, and he has CD's for sale on the internet. It is said that " impersonation " is the highest form of flattery, therefore as a die-hard James Brown fan, I sincerely believe that the Godfather of Soul, aka, James Brown would be flattered by Charles Bradley's magnificent performances ! I just hate that it took me 2 years to finally catch his shows. I never thought that I would go see an impersonator, but after 4 years of accepting, that the GFOS is dead and gone, I was able to admit that someone else can do a great impression. I still can't believe that this Christmas will be 5 years since James Brown died ! God has rested his " talented " soul, and He has the ressurrection in which to to look forward, John 5:28, 29. Amen ! ( I will look for you on You-tube, and for the scrapbook. By the way, I have 10 scrapbooks of JB ! ). My, my ! You said 1995 - 1996, so was that before or during Tomi Rae and Rolanda watts ?

Well, I do declare ! I could not find YOU and JB on " Soul Mates ", after clicking on 10 pages, nor could I find the 1996 European Tour. What do YOU think happened . By the way, another commenter informed me of another JB impersonator, by the name of Buck Taylor ! Have you heard of him ? I did a search on him, but I di not want to sign up to his MY SPACE website ! He appears to resemble JB, but he looks like he has the mumps, heehee. There is a site to order Buck's CD's, but no decent photos of him ! I wouldn't spend a " buck " on his music ! Now BLACK VELVET is a different situation, um - hum. He has the " velvet " touch. Believe me ! If you have the " online scrapbook of the 1996 European Tour, then why not share them via this medium ( I am not a fan of Facebook or Twitter ).

HES MUCH MUCH UGLIER THAN JAMES EVER WAS
11:29 PM on 07/24/2011
UGLY ? James Brown was not ugly, nor is Black Velvet, aka Charles Bradley ! I bet you ain't that good looking yourself, because if you were, it would not matter how someone else looked to you. How does the saying go . . . " It takes UGLY to know ugly ! " I think that Charles Bradley looks more like the Godfather of Soul, than any of James Brown's children, with the exception of a daughter, named Venisha ! I have seen Black Velvet perform at the EMPIRE CASINO in Yonkers, New York, and I must say that I wa truly mesmerized. I was in tears, because I thought that the Godfather of Soul had ressurected from the dead. Family members had tried to get me to go see this amazing performer for 2 years, but I said that I did not want to see an impersonator, but that I wanted to see the REAL DEAL ! We know that is not possible, right ! Well, I was in tears during and after the " fantabulous " performance of Charles Bradley. I hope to see him again in October at the casino in Yonkers !
09:25 PM on 07/23/2011
I was just browsing the web and came across this story. So weird to see my name in print and spelled the same way! I wonder how many other Kelsey Bennett's are out there?!
11:36 PM on 07/24/2011
So-o-o-o, are you Black Velvet, or is your name Charles Bradley also ? This is certainly an amazing performer, and it is said that IMITATION is the greatest form of flattery, therefore, I think that the Godfather of Soul would definitely be flattered ! I can hardly wait to see this amazing performer at the casino in Yonkers, N.Y. in October. I loved myself some James Brown, and I am in love AGAIN, heehee !
09:05 PM on 07/23/2011

Jame Brown impersonator?! This man, Charles Bradley, can stand alone -- doesn't need to be compared to anyone.
11:40 PM on 07/24/2011
True dat ! Charles Bradley can stand on his own ! Did you listen to the video of him singing his OWN song, " This World is Going Up in Flames " ? I heard that he is on tour in Europe at the moment, and will return to the USA next month. He will be performing at the casino in Yonkers, N.Y. in October. I can barely wait !

I would love to see him perform. From the energy he gives in his music videos, I can only imagine what it would be like to see him perform in person. I'm out West, so I suppose I will have to wait. Mostly, he is proof positive that you're never too old to seek out your dreams ;)

Boy, do I miss soul music. Rap took away a lot of black talent.
08:34 PM on 07/23/2011
I doubt you've listen to a Tribe Called Quest's Bonita Applebum in the early 90's, or even heard or Grandmaster Flash or Sugarhill gang in the late 70's early 80's. Pure classics. I listen to Soul as well as R&B. I enjoy all kinds of music. Black talent exists in all forms of music, even punk. Have you heard of the Bad Brains in the late 70's/ early 80's? I still have their record. Even today's music, with artists such as John Legend or Lupe Fiasco capture talent. Don't be narrow minded.

I'm not narrow minded. I was just mentioning that I miss soul music. It doesn't happen too much anymore when you turn on the radio. The white people today have perfected the black sound while the black people today are not using their God-given voices. They are using their anger.....such a waste.

I am like so of the other people saying that this man do not look like James Brown. He can sang a little bit, need improving on voice talent. He looks like a lady here in town that wore wigs and he wish he was James Brown. He need to just go out there and try singing on his own name not James Brown. There will never be another James Brown. James Brown was a excellent performer, not something like this man. The song was good, the man need some voice lessons on his part. Whoever said this man looks like James Brown need four pair of glasses and need to quit smoking those left hand cigs.

Check Out Buck Taylor in YouTube 2 me he hits James brown !!!
11:59 AM on 07/24/2011
I went to YouTube 2 and looked at Buck Taylor. This man do look alot like James Brown and he can sing a lot better. You know he still won't take James Browns place. James Brown was the one and only. But, this Buck Taylor is the one that should be recieving a singing award. He need a contract with a record company. His style of singing is much better than Bradley. Buck Taylor looks better and his singing is a much richer quailty. Both men are good, but, Mr. Taylor would win hands down on any table.
11:46 PM on 07/24/2011
Have you seen this amazing man perform ? I am a die-hard-fan of James Brown, and I say that none of the Godfather's children look as much like him as does this guy ! He truly mesmerizes me during his performances, so much so, that I thought that James Brown had been ressurected from the dead ! Do try to catch a LIVE performance, instead of being so critical, okay.
01:18 PM on 07/25/2011
Carolyn, you have your opinion and I got mine. This Bradley dude doesn't look like James Brown even if I say him in person. Now, on the other hand Buck Taylor looks more like James Brown. This is my opinion and it sticks.
06:06 PM on 07/25/2011
Thank God that we all do have our own opinions ! I will have to google BUCK TAYLOR, because I have never heard of him. I first caught BLACK VELVET's performance in October 2010. My daughter and cousin had been trying to get me to see him perform for two years, but I said that I did not want to see an impersonator, only the REAL DEAL, hahahaha. Now we know that's not possible ( but I do google the performances of the God Father of Soul on You- Tube ), besides, his live shows are etched in my memory FOREVER ! I loved myself some James Brown, and I can't believe that " Christmas 2011 ", will be 5 years since he died. God has certainly rested his " talented " soul ! However, HE has the ressurrection in which to look forward ( John 5:28, 29 ).
08:02 PM on 07/23/2011
James Brown have a daugther that can dance just like him . I don't know if she can sing.
11:42 PM on 07/31/2011
Yes, this daughter named Venisha can sing, as well as his daughter Yamma. There is a CD out there with these 2 daughters and their father, James Brown singing together !
07:42 PM on 07/23/2011
Please pass on to Charles that I loved the one song I heard. I liked Brown. Yes, I am old and I still like his music.

What the ham sandwich. This man does not look like JB.

I have had the privilege of James Brown as one of my escorts. Mr. Bradley has somewhat of a resemblence and is good as far as look alikes go (with a wig and same energetic stage presence) but there will only be one James Brown, one Elvis, one Frank Sinatra and so on.
09:36 AM on 08/05/2011
so you just posted this to feel fancy about having met James Brown - huh.
