T. Boone Pickens On The Future Of Energy (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/21/11 07:57 PM ET Updated: 09/20/11 06:12 AM ET

When it comes to renewable energy, oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens says the future is bright, but oil and gas will still be around for quite a while.

"You're stuck with oil and natural gas I'd say for at least 20-30 years," Pickens says in an interview with Big Think. "Now what do you go to, to get away from fossil fuels?"

Pickens wrote in a blog for The Huffington Post:

Even with the death of Osama bin Laden, the War on Terror goes on, and it is not difficult to see the link between sending hundreds of billions of U.S. dollars to unfriendly nations and the continued ability of terrorist organizations to recruit, organize, train, and deploy fanatics who are bent on doing America harm. Someone is paying for all that, and I believe that someone is us.

Pickens doesn't want to talk about the fact that wind and solar costs are actually coming down. He also doesn't want to talk about the fact that natural gas prices are artificially low because the industry does not pay for externalized costs, such as the massive quantities of water used in the hydraulic fracturing (or "fracking") process; contamination of aquifers and air pollution from fracking; hazardous waste disposal costs from dealing with the fracking "flowback" water; and wear on local roads due to extremely heavy truck traffic needed to bring water, sand and chemicals to fracking sites.

After T-Boone is done fracking us to hell, we can just burn our tap water.

there seems to be a correlation between those two things.....the fracking will ruin the drinking water, and then t. boone will make a bundle of loot selling us bottled water.

When the Natural Gas Industry succeeds in ruining the water supply with it`s fracking procedures....drinking water will cost several dollars a glass.

Thanks for the input Tboone. Now can I have a glass of water for $4.50 please. What's that? It's a heat wave so you are rising the price to $6.75? Surely that is the reason you are purchasing water rights all over our land! And yes, I called you Surely!

T Boone is buying up oil rights, gas rights and WATER rights all over the West.

He's VERY dangerous.

What we need to do is invest heavily in renewables now, so we don't have to wait half a century for the private sector to get around to doing it, when the fossil fuels have become prohibitively expensive and nations are fighting wars over the remaining scraps.

The market place does not solve problems of this magnitude in a timely manner. It just doesn't. Imagine if Roosevelt had left the private sector to handle World War II.

One word " WATER" he is buying up water rights all over the place

As much as we know that this guy is pushing for something to make him even richer, he really is being quite rational.

The Hard Core Right uses the argument that we can't get off Oil anytime soon. And that is true, but we should be working on the alternatives to fossil fuel and try to reduce our usage. This is the part they never want to talk about.

When will Pickens tell the truth and l investors in Natural Gas know the gas corporations are running a ponzi  scheme to profit from investors while promising easy access to the gas, when in some cases it is impossible to get the gas out of the ground?

do you think there's any conflict of interest in his message?

Picken's energy biz is mainly in the US. He's trying to get the governemt to allo whim to drill in more places at home.
