Akshat Saxena Has Most Fingers And Toes: Guinness World Records

Most Fingers And Toes

First Posted: 07/22/11 06:23 PM ET Updated: 09/21/11 06:12 AM ET

Count'em up. This young man born with 34 fingers and toes set a Guinness World Record for most digits.

Akshat Saxena had seven fingers on each hand and 10 toes on each foot when he was born in India in 2010, a Guinness spokeswoman told The Huffington Post.

"I was so happy to see my baby as it was our first child," his mother Amrita Saxena told NDTV. "But later, when I saw his fingers, I was shocked and surprised."

Doctors recently amputated the excess appendages in a series of surgeries and now Saxena has the typical five digits per limb, the Guinness spokeswoman said.

This prodigious polydactyl wasn't born with thumbs, but doctors planned to create them with pieces of the extra figners, The Hindustan Times reported.

Delighted mum Rinku Devi delivered her one-in-fifty-million babies last Friday (29 July) in the northern city of Patna. Stunned doctors said giving birth to healthy babies conceived in different ovaries is so rare an average of one case is reported each year anywhere in the world. The babies, however, are not twins, as they were conceived at different times. According to gynaecologist Dr. Dipti Singh, "Rinku Devi suffers from a rare medical condition known as the uterus didelphys in which the womb develops in two parts, each with its own fallopian tube. It is quite a rare congenital condition and less than 100 women around the world are known to have it." Rinku's condition was not diagnosed until she went into labor, but after a one-hour-long surgery, she gave birth to two little boys weighing 2 kilograms and 1.5 kilograms respectively.

i know this is nothing more than a conspiracy theory, but there are a lot of clinical drug trials poor people are subjected in India (also prenatal exposure to uranium pollution), and it makes me wonder about all the birth defects children are born with there.

I'd like to know if his fingers functioned normally. His feet appeared to be "doubled up" and might be uncomfortable to walk on, but his hands appeared "normal" with just double the amount of fingers. It would be a shame if they removed fully functioning fingers just for appearance's sake...

This headline is not only insensitive and crass, it is incorrect. Since, according to the article, this unfortunate child has had his excess digits removed, the headline should read "Had" rather than "Has" Most Fingers and Toes. Just another example of the HUFFPOST/AOL journalistic trainwreck.

Absolutely, vile and disgusting headline, HuffPost.

I wonder if it's possible that this boy's mother was originally pregnant with twins but one fetus absorbed the other or something similar? This is very interesting. I hope the doctors were able to give him normal hands and that he has a normal, happy life.
