Winnipeg Jets Logo Unveiled

Winnipeg Jets Logo

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/22/11 06:07 PM ET Updated: 09/21/11 06:12 AM ET

On June 24, the National Hockey League's new Winnipeg team unveiled its team name: the Jets. Now that team has a logo.

Truth North Sports & Entertainment, owners of the Jets, unveiled the logo at 5 p.m. today. (Scroll down to see it.)

Rather than using a version of its old logo, the Jets opted for a brand new identity. Its owner explained the choice:

"[We] felt it was important for the new Winnipeg Jets to develop a strong new identity," said Mark Chipman, Chairman & Governor of True North Sports & Entertainment. "We felt it was important to authenticate the name Jets and we believe the new logo does that through its connection to our country's remarkable Air Force heritage, including the rich history and relationship that our city and province have enjoyed with the Canadian Forces."

Early Twitter reactions to the logo from Winnipeg have been mixed. The new uniforms for the team, which is moving from Atlanta, will be unveiled at a later date.

See the logo for yourself below and let us know what you think of it in the comments.

Could that logo get any more Canadian? Maybe they should smear some maple syrup over the maple leaf and have the jet be made out of Canadian bacon with a little Mountie visible as the pilot and a speech bubble that goes "we're Canadian, eh?"

I like them. They have a nice retro feel to them.

love it. it's classic, but new. pays homage to the air force. maybe a bit too much maple leaf, but hey- we need to get excited and patriotic and ecstatic. i want the entire stadium to be roaring O Canada opening day. i can't wait. go jets, go habs, go canada.

Why did the previous Winnipeg Jets franchise move, and what is going to be different this time ?
06:45 PM on 07/25/2011
Mainly because of the lack of ownership interest and the Jets were playing in an outdated arena.

At the time the issue ws all about the money. Moving forward at least in the first year that doesn't seem to be an issue.

Looks like the grille of a car. Must have used auto designers for the logo.

As a pure sports graphic, I like it. It's clean, bold and has a strong use of color. Lends itself to strong merchandising.

Not big on mixing military symbols in sports, but I don't recall the Canadian Air Force starting any phony wars lately, so I have no big complaint about that.

Remember, logos don't exist in a void. Over time, they take on the meaning and cache of the team they represent. If the Jets stink for decades, no one will like it much. If the Jets become a gritty, tough, successful team, everyone (in Winnipeg anyway) will come to love it. That's how logos work. They're a rorschach test for our association with the team.

Judging it now means very little one way or the other.

Should have changed the name of the team if this is was the best that they could come up with.

Changed from Atlanta Thrashers. Maybe not as good as the Manatoba Moose they replaced.

I meant they shouldn't have gone with the wha/nhl (71-96) Jets name if they couldn't improve on the logo.

Very retro - could have been designed in the 40's or 50's.

If it were designed in the 40's or 50's it would look better. This is awful. The Jets might still look better than the Minnesota Wild, but that isn't saying much.

Using the Gotham typeface is going to date the logo in a couple of years. The values of the grays and reds are very close and difficult to discern the shapes from each other. Especially in the hockey stick version. The jet is used like a MicroSoft icon. Its not moving or doing anything exciting (other than exploding apparently). Think of all the things that jet could be doing. but it just sits there as an icon in case you didn't know the team name. Isn't this a little Toronto Maple Leafs-y? The spacing on "JETS" on the hockey stick version is clumsy and not worked out. There's a lot of real estate on either side of the word. Its the name of the team, do something cool for gods sake! The big winner by far is the type solution. It's original ligature work, memorable and easy to read. No dark gray here. Obviously type work is the designers forte'. Using Gotham is a crutch though.

Looks too much like an old CAF logos from the 60s.

it's one thing to stick a hockey logo on a can of beer, but you never stick a beer logo on a hockey team.

I would have designed it, but nobody asked me.

Although the team name has Jets in it.....no need to actually have a picture of a "Jet" in the logo I mean we get it...... I like the other two except the one with the pic of a "Jet"

I suppose that they wished to differentiate it from the RCAF roundel.
