Rick Perry: Gay Marriage A States' Rights Issue

Rick Perry Gay Marriage

By IVAN MORENO   07/22/11 11:02 PM ET   AP

ASPEN, Colo. -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a potential Republican presidential candidate, said Friday he supports state rights so much that he's fine with New York's approval of gay marriage but still called himself an "unapologetic social conservative."

Perry, who has been weighing a presidential run, said he opposes gay marriage – but that he's also a firm believer of the 10th Amendment.

"Our friends in New York six weeks ago passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex. And you know what? That's New York, and that's their business, and that's fine with me," he said to applause from several hundred GOP donors in Aspen, Colo. "That is their call. If you believe in the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business."

It's not the first time Perry has expressed strong feelings on state rights. He said he didn't think Arizona's divisive immigration law would be the best course for Texas but supported Arizona's right to push for its law.

His comments may further stoke tea party groups that have criticized Perry's record on issues like immigration and public health and his ties to the Democratic party before he became a Republican in 1989, around the same time as other conservative Democrats.

Perry was speaking Friday at a forum held by the Aspen Institute as the Republican Governors Association held a fundraiser and convention in Aspen, a glitzy resort town with heated sidewalks about four hours southwest of Denver.

Republican Govs. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Nikki Haley of South Carolina, Susana Martinez of New Mexico, and Bob McDonnell of Virginia also attended the forum.

Perry has been strongly hinting that he'll run for president and said during the forum that he'll make an announcement in three to four weeks. He said he believes being Texas governor is "the best job in America" but that his wife has encouraged him to aim for the presidency.

He said his wife told him he should tackle the issues of the new health care law and the national debt.

"And she says, `You need to get out of your comfort zone. Your country is in trouble and you need to do your duty.' I listen to my wife," Perry said.

He took shots at President Barack Obama, questioning his announcement last month to pull 33,000 troops from Afghanistan by the summer of 2012. Perry said Obama should listen to his military commanders "and not his political advisers."

The forum moderator pressed Perry about his presidential ambitions a couple of times, but the governor didn't budge, saying only that he's "going through a thoughtful process."

"I'm asking the right questions," he said. "I'm basically asking people, `Do you think there's room in this presidential election for a full-throated, unapologetic fiscal conservative? And if you do think there's room, are you going to help?'"

But it was clear Perry had the presidency on his mind Friday. At one point, he made the crowd laugh when he started answering a question with a slip: "As the president ... As the governor of the state of Texas ...."

There is no such thing as "state's rights". The rights belong to the individuals of society--and the only choice is whether we take seriously the Constitution's mandate for "equality before the Law". It doesn't matter if we "like" someone or their cause or not, it only matters that all people are treated equally in the eyes of the Law.

Based on this, either marriage equality must be upheld as a right, or the Federal government needs to completely remove "marriage" as a consideration at all. Personally, I am in favor of marriage equality.

I wouldn't cast my vote for Rick Perry in a million years. I don't trust him and his cronies, especially trying to pass the drug on to our young girls because he was getting a cut him and his buddies. Then was talking about making Texas a non union state, he has lost his mind!! Also for a man that can afford to cut, do you think he could have found a place reasonable than $10,000 per month to live in? We live in Texas, they could have found something cheaper after all it's only temporary!

Texas is the only state in the nation that has not suffered economically in the recent USA recession. all major Texas cities are the top cities in which people are moving for jobs. This fact is not because Perry and his administration don't know what they are doing. As far as the 10.000 per month housing cost, Perry is governor . . Do you expect Perry to live in low rent housing? Obama lives in much more expensive than this. You seem to forget that Perry is from a poor Texas family that did not have plumbing in their home until he was six years old. I live in Palo Pinto County, Obama left many residents who were poor without any aid to help with their homes during the recent fire disaster. Senator John Cornyn, Perry, and Kay Hutchinson all asked Obama to reconsider, and he said no and never showed up in Texas. You can verify this if you download Texas news channels. Perry prayed for Obama and his family in his Christian Houston gathering. Perry showed nothing but class by praying for Obama who had deliberately shunned Perry and many people in Texas during a terrible disaster. This was done deliberately by Obama because many in Texas don't agree with Obama's policies. Obama canceled the National Day of Prayer, which our nation had for decades, for all religions. Apparently Obama believed neither he nor the nation needs God's guidance. Obama's arrogance is shocking. .

I just posted. Perry has said Texas needs no Arizona immigration law, we have a long border with Mexico and have good relations with Mexico. Perry wants to keep it that way, though he did say we need immigration reform. Perry is for the honest, hard working immigrant, who wishes to start a life in this country. Perry has also said though he is personally not for gay marriage, he respects states rights to legalize gay marriage, This is a wonderfully open attitude, especially on the part of one who is a Christian.States and individual rights need to be respected. Obama does not respect an individuals rights or states rights, except, when it comes to racism. Obama even blew the racism issue, In the Presidential primaries, Obama said his white grandmother who raised him showed 'typical white behavior." I cannot imagine how badly this hurt this poor woman who raised Obama, and having been said to international media. Obama has said he is 'suspicious of states that try to pass their own laws." Obama is without a doubt one who wants too much government control. . . Go to the website of the National Black Republican Association. This group has said from the beginning that Obama is not whom they want to represent their race in history. Martin Luther King was a Republican.

"States Rights" means, "Republicans don't control the Federal government, so we want to protect our own demesne until we get control again, then we'll eviscerate states rights".

W didn't give a lick about states rights when he was president.  No Child Left Behind was the biggest unfunded mandate in US history.

Let's see him take that position when marriage equality comes to Texas.... because just like the right of women to vote, or the desegregation of schools, it WILL come.

Well I wonder why the party that is so concerned about wasting money is staying at expensive Aspen, CO, palyground of the elite, and NOT, say an American city such as Cape Coral, Fla., Detroit, MI, Youngstown, OH or even Las Vegas, NV?!! My goodness, heated sidewalks, when many of their constituants won't even be able to heat their homes this winter due to the Repubs playing self rightous with our economy!!! This IS the party of Jesus!!

• Next time I tell you someone from Texas should not be president of the United States, please pay attention. - Molly Ivins

Actually we Texans all want Goodhair to get the nomination because it will shine light on his machinations here in the Republic. When he crawls back from the presidential race to lick his wounds, he'll be such damaged goods that Texans won't want him anymore. Can you imagine what his response to the following questions in a debate would be:

“Governor Perry, you said before the campaign began that the single most important issue in 2012 was the Tenth Amendment. Do you honestly believe that the majority of Americans consider states’ rights a higher priority than improving health care or education or national security?”

“Governor Perry, you have hinged your campaign on your success in bringing jobs to the State of Texas. But during the period you boast about, your state added more minimum-wage jobs than the 49 other states combined. Texas now has more citizens living in poverty, more uninsured children and adults than any other state. Is that your vision for America?”

“As governor of Texas, Mr. Perry, you have doled out hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars, along with thousands of high-level government jobs and appointments, to your largest campaign contributors. As president, do you intend to continue this practice?”

Perry, you can dance the repub rodeo all you want and share your personal thoughts on gay marriage but a fine thinker and respectful man of diversity you are not. You, Perry, are not leadership quality of a nation that is mostly smarter than you.

We simply wont allow it by virtue of intellect. Your personal feelings are personal, keep em that way and out of public service.

salesman for life-You couldn't be more wrong. . Texas is the only state in the nation that has not declined terribly financially during the recession, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin are the top cities in the United where people have been moving for jobs, This is not because Perry and his administration don;t know what they are doing financially. you should respect Perry, a Christian, who respects states rights to legalize gay marriage. . Perry has said he is personally not for gay marriage . But he respects others rights, No, you are wrong that this country 'won't allow it." I am a Christian, but gays have the right to be who they are.

Rickie couldn't be elected to the office of president in either the 20th or the 21st centuries; he is would be out of step with the American people in two centuries.

There's no doubt the nomination is his for the taking. People are blinded by the good hair, and don't even pay attention to what he says. I'm just wondering if he is hesitating because he is trying to figure out if he has a real chance against Obama. He always wins elections, and he will not enter if he thinks he will lose. There is a chance he could wait until 2016, when Obama is out of the way, and people have forgotten how bad Bush was. Either way, he is a disaster we will have to deal with at some time. Please, remaining investigative reporters: START DIGGING.

First ten comments I read here are absolutely devoid of any rhyme or reason. No more Texans in the White house, He wants to secede, etc, etc. Just stupid. How could I possibly add to that?
02:40 AM on 07/26/2011
You managed to do it.
08:57 AM on 07/26/2011
Wait...how is the fact that he stated that he wanted Texas to secede from the union NOT an important issue here?
