M.I.A. released an unfinished demo via Twitter early this morning titled "27," which we caught wind of via Disco Naivete. Complete with lyrics on her Soundcloud site, the artist left a note dedicating it "to all my friends who died at 27."

27 is the age that has taken many an artist from us, including Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and now, Amy Winehouse.

Q: who the heck is MIA and why is this news?

A: she is a singer who 'represents her people' while being married to a billionaire (which is why this article is here).
01:13 PM on 07/25/2011
Poor Amy. At least she won't ever have to hear or know about the vultures swooping in and "creating" memorial "songs" in her name.

"Sleazy" and "ooportunistic" are what came to my mind.

Some of you need to open your minds and your hearts (maybe your ears too.) Whinehouse was an artist, true artists remind us of our humanity and why that is a gift. She taught us the ultimate lesson: Money/Fame can't buy life or happiness. Give/Get some love in this life, as much as you can. Why is there so much hatred here?

What did they call it? "Basket Case"?

And, having listened to her album, what was so good about it?

In honor of a lousy singer who was brain addled before she got hooked on drugs and alcohol? In 6 months people will be saying: Amy who??

It makes one wonder why someone who so declares to loath the singer goes into the article to take one last duke on someone after her death.

You stay classy dooooosh.
An let me know when your magnum opus is available so I can hear your clearly stellar pipes.
You certainly are the handle on a door aren't you?
You should go post over at Mediaite:
That's where the trolls are having a GREAT old time yukking it up.

...handle on the door..., classic. I have remember that one.

Amy had her demons no doubt, who doesn't, but she also had a great set of pipes and a soul to move them.

Tony Bennett, who recently recorded a duet with her, payed a touching tribute to her, 'truly devastated - an artist of immense proportions'.

Good enough for me, rest easy.

To each their own. I know only a little of Amy's stuff but thought this was a pretty remarkable number.

Please don't use the name Amy Winehouse in the same sentence as Jimi Hendrix...there's really no comparison.

Happy to be alive.

I agree. She had enormous potential, but she was not an exceptional and seasoned artist like Hendrix.
10:05 AM on 07/25/2011
That's right - comparing her to The Beatles or Elvis is much more accurate. Amy was the greatest musical talent of the 21st century.

So, did anyone actually hear or understand what she's saying? I think it's a terrible song.

It's fine not to like it. I did and didn't find it any more difficult to understand than lyrics from some of my other faves like Springsteen and Mellencamp!

Has a good beat but her voice on the track sounds really off. Hopefully they can work it out in the studio.

I can't speak for the public but Amy Winehouse's music had a huge impact on me. Her Back To Black album is painfully introspective and honest, her gift of self-expression is undeniable. You don't have to like her to recognize how talented she was. The public may consider her an equal among the rest of the Forever 27 club but I personally hold her in such high regard. She was troubled, intense, visceral and incredibly talented just like the rest of them. Sadly, she makes a perfect addition to the list.

RIP Amy.

She was under-appreciated like Terence Trent D'arby! Oh my goodness, that man's voice was powerful. If the voice doesn't have digital boosts and a load full of samples to 'rap' or 'whine' to, then most don't consider it music. Her voice was powerful! I love a voice that I can recognize from the first 3 words. Not many musicians can claim that power. (Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Amy Winehouse, Tina Marie, Nora Jones, Pink, etc)
