Andrew Walker Mark: Australian Football League Forward Climbs Defender To Make Unreal Catch (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/25/11 04:22 PM ET Updated: 09/24/11 06:12 AM ET

You're not going to see a mark much better than this.

The following video comes from Melbourne's Carlton Australian Football League Club's match against rival Essendon on Saturday. Watch carefully, as Carlton forward Andrew Walker ignores the difference between his defender and a step-ladder to climb up for an incredible grab.

The catch is being called the "Mark Of The Year" and prompted Deadspin to suggest "eliminating offensive pass interference."

Carlton coach Brett Ratten was certainly impressed.

"I said to him at half-time to stay on the ground a bit more because I thought he was flying at everything," Ratten said in a post-game interview. "He looked at me when he came off and said 'Is that OK?' -- I said that's OK when you do that."

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the Carlton rugby club was based in Auckland, New Zealand. It also misidentified coach Brett Ratten as "Bruce."

This is pretty bizarre, I never thought the Huffington Post would bother itself with Australian Rules Football, but then to get it confused with Rugby and think that Carlton is in Auckland (actually New Zealand, a country where AFL is not played) one begins to wonder what is going on!

Okay, yeah, clearly a bit of a car crash of an article. The effort is appreciated, though.

For the record: note that while a catch is "made" in baseball or NFL, a "mark" is "taken" in AFL football (just as a catch is "taken" in cricket). Also, he's an Australian Football League (or AFL) player, he doesn't play Australian League Football - you wouldn't call someone a National League Football player, would you?

I'd go for:

Aussie Rules Forward Andrew Walker Climbs Defender To Take Unreal "Mark"
========================
You're not going to see a "mark" much better than this.

The following video comes from the Australian Football League, where AFL clubs Carlton and Essendon squared off in Melbourne on Saturday. Watch carefully as Carlton forward Andrew Walker ignores the difference between his defender and a step-ladder to climb up for an incredible grab.

The leap is being called the "Mark Of The Year" and prompted Deadspin to suggest "eliminating offensive pass interference."

Carlton coach Bruce Ratten was certainly impressed.

"I said to him at half-time to stay on the ground a bit more because I thought he was flying at everything," Ratten said in a post-game interview. "He looked at me when he came off and said 'Is that OK?' -- I said that's OK when you do that."

==================================

Not perfect, but much better.

And inevitably, having sent it, I looked it over and said "wait a minute...":

Brett (not Bruce) Ratten is Carlton's coach. Where did *that* one come from?

"Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the Carlton rugby club was based in Auckland, New Zealand."

Oh, good grief. The Carlton rugby club IS based in Auckland, New Zealand! THIS IS NOT THAT CLUB!

NFL players would be doing that every Sunday if offensive pass interference wasn't against the rules.

if you watch a full game thats when you will be saying wow all the hits and falls and still they get up and keep on playing without any helmets or anyother protection like the guys that play nfl
10:56 AM on 07/26/2011
He could play in the NFL as a WR. Cool play though

Please just delete this article, and never post another about Australian Rules Football ever again. Even when you try to correct it, you still get it wrong.

You guys have the internet, right? It's called wikipedia
11:44 PM on 07/31/2011
why never post an article about aussie rules footy.
01:12 AM on 07/26/2011
That's some pretty weird "rugby" being played by "Auckland". I won't bother to post the corrections because pretty much everyone else has.

Gayest uniforms ever.

1. Wrong sport, that's Australian Rules Football.
2. Wrong city, Melbourne not Auckland.
3. Wrong country, Australia not New Zealand.
4. It's a 'mark' not a 'catch'.
Whoever writes/fact checks needs to be fired immediately.
07:47 PM on 07/25/2011
AND they got the country wrong. Cummon. It's Australian Football League. In Australia. And that catch is called a mark. One this good, is a "Speccie"--a spectacular mark at that.

That looks dangerous. Is the defender not allowed to hit him in the air. In the American Professional football he would have gone out on a stretcher if he jumped that high with a defender near him.

Since everyone is criticizing the article for not knowing what sport this is.....

From the article,
"The following video comes from Auckland New Zealand's Carlton Rugby Football Club's match against..."

The headline of the article states "Carlton Rugby forward climbs..."

So the article is not mistakenly calling the game a rugby game, it is stating that the forward for the Carlton Rugby Football Club climbed on top of the defender.
01:02 AM on 07/26/2011
That is still wrong.

The club does not play in Auckland, New Zealand, they play in Melbourne, Australia.

And they are not known as Carlton Rugby, they are the Carlton Football Club...you can see their initials on the logo on their shirts.

There should be no mention of rugby anywhere here

On their website they call themselves the Grammar Carlton Rugby Football Club, and they say they are in Auckland, New Zealand. Maybe that's a different organization?
07:07 PM on 07/25/2011
carlton are not from Auckland NZ but Melbourne Australia and this is AFL not rugby
