Mayor Michael Bloomberg presided over the wedding of Jonathan Mintz, his Commissioner of Consumer Affairs and John Feinblatt, his Chief Policy Adviser, yesterday at a ceremony at Gracie Mansion. It was the first day same-sex marriage was legal in the state of New York.

Feinblatt and Mintz have been partners for 14 years and have two young daughters together, according to The New York Times. They worked closely with Mayor Bloomberg on the successful campaign to legalize same-sex marriage in New York.

we're still not quite there folks, for adults who want to marry. there is one more step that needs to be taken. We have hetero and homosexual marriages; now join me in fighting for legal marriage for consenting adult polygamous families!

The question of democracy. In order for this to be democratic decision it have to be really approve by general population. I mean by majority of voting population. First there should be referendum not just back door collusion with corrupt politician that are promise campaign contribution from gay activist. You just bought the politician you did not convince any body. That the same tactic that corrupt corporation buying influence in Washington, states and cities - few buying the control over all.

I disagree that Gay marriage is a good for society and good for the Gay them self. I had nothing for the Gay unions but marriage...that step too fare. So nothing to be proud and to celebrate in NYC.

So let me finish on more sarcastic note: So next time what... you could married with not living things like tablet, chars (I think I already have union with that – sitting whole day on it:) or house.. how about dogs. The last one may have really some traction because people genuinely lover there pets and vice verse. If somebody is offense, I am apologized , but we are all animals...

While I completely disagree with you, I must say you certainly have the courage of your convictions.

You are incorrect about this being put to a vote. According to the US Supreme Court, marriage is a fundamental right. Marriage has always been seen as a civil right, and folks don't get to vote on whether or not people are offered the same rights as others. Example, we didn't vote to decide if blacks could go to schools with whites. We did not vote to give the right to vote to women. We did not vote to allow interracial couples to marry and live together as husband and wive, yet all these rights were denied to these people by the same public you think should vote for/against marriage equality.

What if I wanted to deny you and others who clearly are not native English speakers the right to communicate online? And the whole 'marry a dog' argument is never used by intelligent people anymore. A dog, a table, a plant -- cannot enter into contracts and marriage, like it or not, is a contract.

So NY government " be_nd o_ver" to 3.8 % of the population at best. That percolation contains:1st genuine born people with permanent genetic change, 2nd effected by gender bender chemicals like endocrine produced by corporation like Monsanto, 3rd just brain wash, abused and so on. The first two are very closely connected and the trend is on the rise.
The government role should be to prevent population modification do to external environment in first place so it will not happen. I do not see much of a trend in US. I see some movement in Europe. This is no a question to some how eliminated existing population because some grope do not like how others behave. That will be immoral and criminal. The key is prevention. The final question will be survival of human kind it self. If you think that this might never happen... thing again. The danger is that some group will deliberately increase gay population as a mean of power. They could sponsor research or block certain restriction in chemical production to deliberately increase the gay population from couple percent of today to to 80-90%. That will spell out end of humanity with in two generation.

Look for Part 2

As a gay New Yorker, this makes me very proud. Thanks to the Mayor, our Governor and our most recent ex-Governor for standing so strongly in favor of equality. My neighbors -- for the most part heterosexual couples -- are also really happy about these recent developments ... and guess what? Their heterosexual marriages are all still intact. None of them has witnessed the collapse of the institution. No one in the building has felt a need to propose to a pet. None of them have added a second or third spouse. Nothing. So, I guess all those warnings from opponents turned out to be just so much hot air, after all. Go figure ....

Congratulations to Mr. Mintz and Mr. Feinblatt and to all loving couples who want (and now can, at least in New York and a few other states and countries) to marry.

They are a part of Bloomberg's staff, not just city employees, hence "staffers" instead of employees.
