IPhone 5 Release Date: 'Early-To-Mid-September?'

Will there be a new iPhone by Labor Day 2011?

Evidence has been mounting recently that the iPhone 5 (also known as the iPhone 4S) will be released at some point in September.

First there was new Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam's slip-up on a recent earnings call, during which he mistakenly told analysts that his company expected an iPhone refresh "sometime in the fall."

And now there is a new rumor from tech blog Boy Genius Report that "AT&T has begun communicating launch plans internally for Apple's next-generation iPhone 5 handset" and that AT&T is ramping up hiring due to the "influx of foot traffic expected in September."

But wait--there's more! Those are just the two latest reports of a September release date for Apple's next generation iPhone, which has been rumored since April. Apple was expected to take the wraps off of a new iPhone in June--it has done so every year for the past several years--but this year, June came and went without a new Apple smartphone. The lack of a refresh has added fuel to rumors that the next iPhone is due in the fall.

On April 12 John Paczkowski of All Things Digital wrote that Apple would announce the updated smartphone at its annual media conference the first week in September. The Wall Street Journal reported on July 7 that people close to Apple expected a new iPhone launch "by the end of September."

I was so excited when i saw the commercial that the iphone 5 would be released on Sep 5th. I saw this commercial earlier this summer on TV. When i called Apple just to confirmed, they said since Apple did not released that date, it wasn’t true. Here i am, Sep 15 looking at my phone and seriously thinking about switching to a differnt phone. Apple ‘cmon, let’s set a release date already so i can have something to hold on to. I’ve been eligible for an upgrade a long long long time ago. I am getting tired of waiting.

The usual idea is that you would use NFC to set up the link between the two devices and then do an automatic hand over to a different protocol for doing the actual transfer of data – eg Bluetooth,iphone 5

Sounds about right...release it in September so that is should actually be working with most of the major bugs patched by the time Christmas rolls around.

Knowing Apple, they always caught people by surprise. It doesn’t matter to them if they had just released their white iPhone 4 version last week. No one can stop them if they want to release the 5th generation iPhone in June. This is the downside of being an Apple fan. But considering that iPhone 5 will be released anytime soon this year, let’s just be a little more patient. Who wouldn’t want a dual-core device for their gaming needs?

um in all fairness, Apple is hardly the only tech company that manages to do that (Nintendo's handheld market comes to mind). And to be honest *most* of the apple folks I know don't pony up the funds to upgrade every year (in fact the only ones I know that DO pony up are developers so they devices on which to test new features etc). Most people I know only upgrade every couple of years.

That said, anyone who feels the need to upgrade to every year for ANY product is kinda silly. But hey, if they wanna spend the $$ and stimulate the economy, more power to 'em.

in all fairness, its a little too late to say what it does or doesn't have as Apple hasn't released any official details about it. Although if the rumors are to be believed its likely only going to be an incremental release with a few hardware tweaks: scaled up processor and a higher quality camera. But its all conjecture at this point.

Well, I have had my original IPhone since 2007, and I must say it's one of the best and most durable phones I have ever had. nearly 5 years for a phone is unheard of in our society of Trash and Buy. I think I'm going to finally upgrade come this release.

Make fun all you want. I can sell my iPhone 4 on eBay and make more than a new iPhone 5 will cost... I have upgraded to every new iPhone and actually made money on the deal.
