Somalia Famine: Dadaab Camp In Kenya At More Than Four Times Capacity (SLIDESHOW)

ROME (Reuters) - Emergency food centers in drought-stricken eastern Africa are overwhelmed by thousands of starving people every day and mothers are forced to abandon their dead or dying children by the roadside, aid officials said on Monday.

Josette Sheeran, executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, told a conference in Rome that a deadly combination of natural disaster and regional conflict had created an emergency affecting more than 12 million people.

"We are seeing all the points able to distribute food completely overwhelmed ... our food is not adequate, so we are airlifting in more life saving supplies," she said.

"We want to make sure the supplies are there along the road because some of them are becoming roads of death where mothers are having to abandon their children who are too weak to make it or who have died along the way," she said.

She said a camp in Dadaab in Kenya for example that was built for 90,000 people was now dealing with 400,000.

Ministers and senior officials met at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome on Monday to discuss how to mobilize aid following the worst drought in decades in a region stretching from Somalia to Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti.

The WFP said it needed an extra $360 million in urgent funds. Oxfam said that overall another $1 billion was needed to handle the situation.

The World Bank said in a statement it was providing more than $500 million to assist drought victims, in addition to $12 million in immediate aid to help those worst hit.

Amid warnings that urgent action was needed to stop a humanitarian disaster spreading across the Horn of Africa, officials said there was still a chance to support people and help them resume livelihoods as farmers, fishers and herders.

Governments worldwide and the U.N. have faced criticism for their slow response to the severe drought but they face severe problems getting aid to a region in the grip of a raging conflict across much of southern Somalia.

The U.N. has declared a famine in two regions of Somalia and warned it could spread further afield.

Years of anarchic conflict in southern Somalia have exacerbated the emergency, preventing aid agencies from helping communities in the area. Nearly 135,000 Somalis have fled since January, mainly to neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia.

The WFP has said it cannot reach more than 2 million Somalis facing starvation in areas controlled by Islamist militants, who imposed a food aid ban in 2010 and have regularly threatened relief groups.

Oxfam's Barbara Stocking said it was very difficult for staff to access parts of Somalia but it was working with local partners to provide aid and they were trying to help them scale up their support in the current crisis.

Hey maybe we can raise a lot of money and send the UN over to have sex with the women. Or better yet the rock stars can get together and have a musical telethone and give all the money to their goverment.

Seriously, what is WRONG with people? There are waaaay too many "they brought it on themselves" or "we have our own problems" comments on here. Do you vastly intelligent people have ANY idea what these people go through or what their society is Actually like. Take a trip to this beautiful country and we'll see if you're still singing the same tune.. As far as all the "stop having babies" comments; birth control isn’t typically an option for these women. In case you didn’t know, third world countries aren’t exactly leaders in women's rights movements.. Jesus, I hate (us) self-righteous American's and our selfishness and lack of empathy. Im willing to bet even the most destitute American has it better than most of the people in this country.

As bad as thing's get in the USA, unemployment come's to mind, we are so much better off
than these starving children. I never go to bed hungry, their are so many recources in this
country to help me when time's get tough. I feel selfish not helping, We shouldn't care if other
countries don't want to help ! WE MUST HELP. We are not a Great Nation if we dont.

I love it when ignorant people with no comprehension of life in other countries or cultures feel they have an overly simple solution for such an overwhelming problem

UNICEF is a good place to donate. I wish we could donate to the equivalent of a mercenary army to squash the al-shabab punks who are denying aid to the starving people. I guess that's illegal (unless you're a gov't).

It is a sad situation, and we just keep sending them moeny and food, and what to they do? they just keep poppen out them babies! How about sending doctors over there to give hystorectomies after the mother gives birth or go snip snip to the guys. It seems like every grown woman has at least 5 kids!. Now this is a bad example but close to it: what happens if you have a room full or rats, with no source of food and nothing to do and no way to get out? well im sure most will die, now if that same room full of rats is constantly given food, what do you think is going to happen? duh! more and mroe rats! it never ends. stop giving them food, nature will take care of it, sorry its the sad truth, everyone deserves the right to live but the world shouldnt contribute to this, we just keep feeding and they keep producing more mouths to feed, so we hae to keep sending mroe food! food in the U.S. is being sent over there to help poor people when we have enough poor people ourselves!

Are you really basing the justification of your position on watching a movie?
08:02 AM on 07/26/2011
Amazing....Our progressive president went around congress to bomb Libya at a cost of $10 million per day using the excuse of preventing innocent deaths in an oil country.....Yet no mention of aid to Millions starving and dying of horrific disease and hardship....I wonder if the $10 million/day could better be used there.....Oh wait, the the progressive agenda and philosophy as opined by their heros , Peter Singer and Margaret Sanger, places a lower value on those peaple...Google those names to see what the belief system is rooted in under the veneer of humanism.

We have overcrowded camps in this country too - they're called jails and prisons. Quite frankly, I have no sympathy for their situation since they chose the behaviors that put them there, and the Somali refugees didn't.

How do you compare criminals in jails to poor women and children dying from famine??!!! At least have a heart and compassion.

You completely missed my point. Did you not notice how many posts were written by people complaining that the US should let the Somalis solve their own problems, how tired they are that their tax dollars are being spent overseas trying to save peoples' lives, that we should only focus on needs here. These opinions are rampant as the Supreme Court orders California to relieve overcrowding in their prisons, saying conditions are inhuman. The definition of true inhumanity is in Somalia and in that refugee camp.

We need to explain to these people that we pay farmers not to grow crops for food and it will be hard to help them. In the future we may come up with a better system and offer them the help that they need.
