Debt Crisis Making Us Look Bad: Madeleine Albright

Albright

First Posted: 07/26/11 03:07 PM ET Updated: 09/25/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The ongoing political circus over raising the debt ceiling is undermining America's position as a "moral example" for the rest of the world, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told The Huffington Post.

"It looks very strange that we can't deal with this," Albright said in an interview. "It weakens our position as a moral example to the rest of the world."

Albright, who served under President Bill Clinton as America's first female Secretary of State, is currently a professor of international relations at Georgetown and remains engaged in American diplomacy.

At a moment when Europe is struggling to find a solution to its own debt crisis -- which, in the case of Greece, has recently led to violent street protests -- Albright said, "We look pretty feckless that we can't deal with it."

Albright also took issue with the single-minded obsession with budget cuts that seems to have gripped much of Congress over the course of the debt debate, saying that as the U.S. begins troop withdrawals in Iraq and Afghanistan, and confronts a civil conflict in Libya and an uprising across the Arab world, the resources allotted to foreign diplomacy, rather than military action, are far too small.

"It's very hard to deal with all of the foreign policy problems that are out there today, really hard, and especially with the constraints that exist," she said. "The State Department budget -- in comparison to the Defense Department's -- is small, which is ludicrous. The budget of the Defense Department is more than $670 billion dollars, and State's is less than $50 billion"

Albright went on, "The budget cuts conversation affects how much money we can put into national security. Congress is arguing right now about the State Department budget, and I read recently that the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted to cancel our dues to Organization of American States, which was a treaty obligation."

HuffPost recently reported that Democratic lawmakers were livid after an appropriations session in the House introduced severe limits to the State Department's budget, including suspending dues to the OAS.

"When we're talking about the fact that many of the problems we have don't have military solutions, but political and diplomatic ones, it doesn't make a lot of sense."

"There is a real debate going on about what is the role of the government in this country," Albright continued. "And I happen to believe that taxes are the price you pay for living in a civilized country."

If we raise taxes on the top 2% to pre-Bush tax cuts, the tax revenue would rise only $123 billion. Leaving us $1.4 trillion short on closing the annual deficit.

So, let's go crazy and take ALL (100%) of the money the top 2% makes. Leaving the U.S. with no millionaires and billionaires. Basically robbing these people of everything they make in a year and killing their businesses, we would still fall short of closing the one year deficit by $30 billion.

Raising taxes is not the answer folks. Plain and simple.

Over exaggeration is not helpful here, no one wants to see millionares and billionares to lose anything, after all,, this is americas promise,,, that somebody from nowhere can become a prominent member of this society,, but lets spread the burdens on all of us of this generation to avoid having an aura of hopelessness for the next generation

Who pays all of these taxes? The best information on that comes from the Congressional Budget Office, which has tracked the tax burden for many years. The most recent complete data cover 2007. CBO figured in that year more than half of all federal taxes was paid by the top 10 percent of income earners. They paid 55 percent of all federal taxes in 2007, CBO said. The CBO also recorded that Corporate taxation paid 9% of all taxes in 2007. Almost 9% more was paid by excise taxes and "other" taxes, leading to the final 27% to be paid by personal income taxation. http://www.factcheck.org/2011/07/fiscal-factcheck/
SO THE CORPORATIONS AND """WEALTHY""" PAY 73% of the total tax burden. IS 73% TAX RATE OK FOR YOU??? IS THIS PROPORTIONATE??? S T O P T H E S P E N D I N G

Nobody likes more taxes, nobody, but this generation should pay this debt down and not kick it down the road for our children, if we had made some wrong moves along the way, then let us pay for it, Republicans will say whatever they think will make them more popular, " no new taxes", "no more taxes" I would think twice about continuing as a republican

If it can be done without additional taxes, it would be the best. Stop the spending.

You may have a point, madam, but the US ceased to be a "moral example to the world" somewhere around the time of Richard Nixon's presidency...

Try to vary your preferred literature a little more.
07:16 AM on 07/28/2011
So before Nixon we were a moral example? Wasn't that less than 10 years after the Selma march? I think this "moral example" vision is a bit idealistic in the first place.

Madeline Albright? Didn't know she was still alive. As to why anyone would care what her opinion is on current events and feel it deserves a "news story" is a bit of a mystery. I guess the media must think the story line is pretty saturated and the current talking heads are repeating themselves too much so they dug her up. The fact she considers us a "moral example" to the world is an indication she is in the throes of dementia.

Madeleine Albright makes perfect sense. The United States is the moral standard for the world and we are doing a poor job at being the leader of the free world. It does look very strange that congress has been unable to get the job done, all the squabbling going on is very childish. What kind of men have we elected when there's another sex scandal every few weeks or months? What does this do to our reputation as a world leader? We're becoming the laughing stock for the rest of the world, we're looking like fools so I guess that's what we have in congress, a bunch of fools. It's a sad time for our country, the morals of our country are shameful.

It is indeed a very sad time for our country.......We have lost credibility all around the world and it continues to get worse every single hour that passes. It is really disturbing to watch and painful to endure..... the arrogance and lack of social conscience from Congress. A collective sociopathic state of mind willing to bring this country down with no remorse whatsoever.....The American people are being held hostage..........and America the Beautiful.......weeps!!
10:46 AM on 07/27/2011
""And I happen to believe that taxes are the price you pay for living in a civilized country."

Finally, someone said it! I agree. Why are Americans so terrified of taxes? Especially since we have one of the lowest tax rates of the first world countries--and far less in benefits and a lower standard of living and more poverty and higher infant mortality and shorter life spans--and are the only country where everyone does not have guaranteed health care. Oh, and one of the unhappiest populations.

Gee, anyone see the connection?
12:46 PM on 07/27/2011
If you gave someone money to help them pay their rent and you found out they spent the money on hookers and booze, would you give them more when they came back to you again. THAT is the level of responsibility our government has with our tax dollars. Waste and fraud is rampant. No one is "terrified" of taxes. They just don't like seeing hard earned money confiscated and thrown away.

The rest of your post is pure pap.
05:21 PM on 07/27/2011
Really? Got any links to prove that?
01:02 PM on 07/27/2011
Where do you get your information? Lowest standard of living?

We don't have the lowest tax rates in the world. Our business tax rates are THE HIGHEST in the world. We recently surpassed Japan last year. We have the best health care in the world. Once you remove the murder rate, we have the longest life spans. Our infant mortality rate is DUE to our overly involved health care system and this country GUARANTEES health care. Federal law mandates that anyone who shows up at a hospital has to be treated. No exceptions.

Nice try though. I'm sure you convince quite a few intellectual lightweights on this site.
05:19 PM on 07/27/2011
All wrong. Look it up. We have some of the lowest effective--EFFECTIVE--corporate and personal tax rates of first world countries. WHO ranks US health care something like 30th in the world for outcomes. We do not have the longest life spans. All I can say is look it up and turn off your TV.

Madeleine halfbright ...a looming scourge on the image of intellect that reflects poorly on the USA. $50B is PLENTY for ""diplomacy"" and of course, she supports taxation being increased. If you took ALL of the wealth from ALL of the wealthy, you still cannot pay the debt. SPENDING cuts are THE answer, halfbright.
11:25 AM on 07/27/2011
"If you took ALL of the wealth from ALL of the wealthy, you still cannot pay the debt." What orifice did you pull that gem from? You sir, are one of the idiots if you think this can be solved without a balance of cuts and revenue increases.
12:01 PM on 07/27/2011
An idiot is one that believes that people that pay 70% of taxes (lets call it what it is) will continue to contribute jobs to the economy like they have. What I AM saying is that taxes are not the answer, that CUTS, SERIOUS CUTS are going to have the dominant effect needed. Nobody ever taxed an economy to health.

The best way to increase revenues is to cut taxes, eliminate loopholes, and broaden the base.

whaaa-whaaa...the credit company want extend my credit so I can't get a security system for my house.

What do you mean I should cancel cable TV, subscription to News Week, cancel my membership at the country club, get a car with better gas mileage; and use that money to pay for security? Yeah! I know Obama said to get rid of the truck and buy a car if gas prices are too high, and to sacrifice, but I'm the federal government; he wasn't talking to me (or to himself)!

Invading countries that are not a threat to the US makes us look bad, very bad.

Our debate should show the concerned world that we have a system for dealing with our currency...its called fiscal responsibility and the unbridled spending and bailouts has got to stop.
06:55 AM on 07/27/2011
Oddly enough, I've not seen much mentioned in these discussions about the loss of the dollar as the world's reserve currency. S&P is already talking about downgrading the US credit rating, regardless of the outcome of the debate, merely because of the debate. The dollar is already falling in value against other world currencies due to the uncertainty that this debate has caused. The impasse in DC and all the political posturing over ideologies will destroy this country. It appears to me that both parties inability to compromise puts the country on a sure footing of collapse. Much of what I see online about the dollar as the world's reserve currency is dated last year. I find that interesting. It's as if this entire "crises" has been manufactured to ensure the demise.

I really wish we could hear more from M. Albright. I used to love her tone and intelligence as she quashed interviewing journalists into submission. She makes H. Clinton look like a pansy in comparison.
