Glendale Man Attempts Hernia Surgery On Himself With Butter Knife

Butter Knife Hernia

A Glendale, Calif. man who attempted to repair his own hernia using a butter knife is recovering at USC Medical Center, the Glendale News-Press reports.

KTLA spoke to Sgt. Tom Lorenz with the Glendale police department who said that officers responding to the call encountered the 63-year naked, reclining on a lounge chair with a knife sticking out of his abdomen.

From The Associated Press:

The sergeant says that while waiting for paramedics, the man pulled out the knife and stuffed a cigarette he was smoking into the wound.

In 2009, a woman suffered infections when she attempted to inject her lips and face with silicone in order to avoid expensive Restylane and Botox plastic surgery.

Last summer, a 32-year-old man in Sweden who was frustrated with the hour-long wait in the emergency room used materials he found at the hospital to sew up his leg himself, according to the The Local.

Earlier this year, Johnathan Avery was arrested in North Carolina after he was suspected of hitting his son and using fishing tackle to sew up the wound on the boy's head.

I don't think anyone wants to think of giving themselves a vasectomy. I know I can't think of cutting myself down there.

Just like the United states, we have to live within our budgets......and our mental abilities.

Damn, my jokes to my dermatologist about her using a cheese grater & belt sander to remove my melanoma may have worked? I guess this guy would have thought so! What would he use to yank out a tooth I wonder, loosen it with a hammer & chisel? Ingorwn nail, no problem, just cut the whole toe off, that'll do it. Now where are those pruning shears...

I've got an uncle that once drank, and fought a lot. I have seen him pull one of his teeth with a pair of pliers several times. He tried to get me to do it, but i was afraid that as soon as the pain hit him, he would hit me, and I'd be the one with the loose teeth.

Wise; never trust anyone who is drunk!

Medicaid won't pay to have a tooth filled. You have to suffer, until it's too rotten to fix, then they will pull it. They will not however, pay for dentures....How's that for rational?

There will be a lot of this after obama ration care goes into effect. The long waiting periods associated with socialized medicine will entice people to take extrordinary measures to do for them selves that ration care will not do. There have been cases of people in Europe who had long waiting list for surgery that attempted to do their own. When you are in pain and told you will be able to be scheduled for surgery in about two or three years. You will be tempted to do your own.

Unlike the US, where you are told there is no wait - as long as you have insurance. No insurance? You can go die somewhere, just don't do here

I've contemplated on doing the next surgery on myself next time around ... have some lumps here and there, inside and outside, that need surgery. After having a Cardiac cauterization $36,894, Orthroscopic knee surgery $8,700 twice, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, $5,000, 6 Spinal Steroid Epidurals at $4,000 each day, add medications, physical therapy, MRIs, Scans, medications, follow up visits to all the different specialists, etc. My insurance doesn't cover it all, therefore I am responsible for the balances, and I live on a fixed income. The hospital bills and collection calls are driving me to drink! Not saying it is the right thing to do, but I can identify with the people that opted to perform surgery on themselves and sew up their own wounds ... I don't know if I have the courage, but I do share their pain!

Acording to our leaders, we don't need to fix healthcare. You should write to Congress and tell them differently. Not that they will listen, but you could try.

Cruel thing to say. If you have insurance, you should go see a shrink.

If he had insurance he would have seen a doctor to repair his hernia.
