Norway Attack: Far-Right Threats Light Up On Europe's Radars After Oslo Tragedy

In its first report published last spring, the EU's Europol (European Police Office) identified the region's biggest terrorist threat as radical Islam. But the criminal intelligence agency also lists several attacks committed over the past few years by far-right activists.

In Hungary, three bomb attacks were foiled in 2009, after the murder of several Gypsies in 2008. In France, six people were arrested for activities linked to far-right extremism in Germany. The police also intervened in Great Britain, the Czech Republic and Germany. Elsewhere, police found "enemies lists," as well as explosives, propaganda material and computer data.

I see this as an attempt to detract from the real story- the shocking reality that Breivik was an Islamophobic, pseudo-Christian armageddonite heavily supportive of Israel- in other words, a neo-con, who had more in common with his fellow extremist American ideologues a la Glenn Beck and the anti-ground zero mosque crowd than he did with the classical European ultra-right.

Right and Left descriptions do not work very well in describing the opponents in this war.

Islamic literalists--those who reject the recent Western influences on Islam--are on one side.

We are all on the other side, but the most dangerous part of our side is what you point to--Christian literalists.

The separation of religion and state is what we have to defend from all literalists.

From what i gather he mentions his love of Israel multiple times; perhaps he was upset that Norway was in favour of a Palestinian state? From what i read the group of children who were gunned down were part of a parade the prior day which was held to support this effort. Maybe this was his right wing hate the news is staying away from reporting on?

Im glad the authorities are getting serious about this.  In NL we have a far right party - the laughably named "Party for Freedom" that is now part of our ruling coalition.  Their single platform:  get rid of the Muslims.

In the last ten years, voices that would ordinarily be shouted down for being far too intolerant and hate inspiring have been given a much bigger platform, and often by Murdoch owned media outlets.   The internet has given them new voice, too.

Alas, hatred is a constant threat - always potentially malignant.  Not only must the police keep on eye on people who can take this hatred to violent extremes, the rest of society needs to make it plain just how unacceptable such bigotry and divineness is. 

The good news is that the good guys vastly outnumber the bad guys.  The not-so-good news is that too many people don't speak out against this type of cancerous thinking.
