Oregon lawmaker David Wu to resign

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Oregon Democratic Representative David Wu, who has been accused of an unwanted sexual encounter with the teenage daughter of a campaign contributor, will resign, his spokesman said on Tuesday.

Wu, 56, had already announced this week that he would not seek an eighth term. Nancy Pelosi, the top-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, had referred the matter to the House Ethics Committee.

Wu said in a statement that he planned to step down "effective upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis."

While he made no explicit mention of the exact misconduct he is accused of, Wu said in his statement, "I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fighting these very serious allegations."

Wu represents Oregon's 1st Congressional District, which includes some of the Democratic-leaning Portland urban area as well as more rural parts of northwest Oregon.
