Romney Set To Fundraise With D.C. Lobbyists On Tuesday

WASHINGTON -- As the political world watches the clock wind down on the debt ceiling debate, presidential candidate Mitt Romney is coming to Washington D.C. for an entirely different reason.

The Romney for President committee is hosting a fundraiser on Tuesday that is being billed as a "Lawyers for Romney" event. Taking place at the offices of the high-profile firm Patton Boggs LLP, the affair will feature a veritable who's who of insider Republican officials. Not all of them are lawyers, however. Several are lobbyists with deep, influential client lists.

Perhaps the most noteworthy lobbyist originally slated to attend the Romney event is an individual who was forced to back out at the last minute. Andrew Siff, of the firm Siff & Associates, was listed as a host on one of the first invitations to be sent out by the Romney campaign. Siff's political significance is owed to the fact that he lobbies for Koch Industries, the private energy conglomerate that has become a Democratic bogeyman for its willingness to bankroll conservative causes.

Asked about his presence on the host list, the Romney campaign responded Monday that Siff had bowed out of the event. Reached by phone, Siff confirmed that he would not be in attendance on Tuesday night; not because he no longer supports Romney -- he said he does -- but because he had a personal issue to deal with instead. Siff gave Romney the $2,300 maximum donation during the 2008 primary election and told The Huffington Post that he planned to back his current run for the White House as well.

Even without Siff on the docket, the Romney fundraiser features some K-Street heavy hitters. Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott is listed as a host. The Mississippi Republican has lobbied for a wide variety of companies with legislative interests before the government, including Goldman Sachs, Raytheon Company, AT&T, and Delta Airlines, which is currently fighting to reverse union-election laws that would make it easier for its workers to organize. J.C. Boggs, who lobbies on behalf of Prudential Financial, and SAP (among others) is also named as a host, as is Darryl Nirenberg, who lists Wal-Mart and MKW Capital, a leading venture capital firm, as clients.

The majority of people on Romney's host list are not federal lobbyists or, for that matter, lobbyists at all. Thomas R. Phillips, a lawyer with Baker Botts and a former Texas Supreme Court Justice, is a registered lobbyist in Texas. Another notable host is Elliot Berke, a former counsel to the former House Majority Leader, and convicted felon, Tom DeLay.

If the registered lobbyists helping to raise money for Romney end up pulling in more than $16,000, their names will be made public under federal election law. But those individuals on the host list who are not registered to lobby will not have to reveal how much money they bundle for the former Massachusetts Governor on Tuesday night. The Romney campaign has said that it will not voluntarily make that information available, despite the fact that previous Republican presidential campaigns, as well as President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, have offered such disclosure.

BELOW IS THE MOST UP-TO-DATE INVITATION:

UPDATE: POLITICO'S Alex Burns has stressed that his colleague, Jonathan Martin, was the first to report on the fundraiser.

All I can say is, "welcome home Mitt."

What do people think they're going to get with this man? He's a true corporatist who made his fortune by buying up companies, cutting them up into pieces, laying off thousands of people and selling off the assets.

He's never ever going to look out for the interests of the American people. They're not even on his radar. So as he takes money from corporate lobbyists it will be the easiest money he ever takes because he's one of them in mind, body, and spirit.

This guy went around the country getting rid of all the jobs and now wants the American people to believe that he is for jobs. Whoever votes for this guy is ignorant and UnAmerican.

This guy is so bought and paid for.
I think Obama might be the last president who wasn't so, "on the take" and "hooked up".
He didn't come from money, not from a wealthy family, was self-made, and a minority.
Read up on Romney's "family tree" for a real eye opener.

Romney offers nothing to the political discourse of our Nation other than a beached squid void of a spine.

Okay doesn't the Tea Party hate this kinda of stuff. I know he is the front runner, but wouldn't this give B more ammo to drop his numbers?

I guess the Huffington Post isn't interested about the fundraising Obama has with lobbyists and special interest groups, or talk about all the $32,000 per plate dinners the President hosts. I'm not surprised these facts are omitted.

They've actually had several reports on Obama's fundraising activities. This report happens to be about Mitt. I can't actually see what the point is that you're trying to make.

romney said obama has not shown leadership, so someone asked him what he would do. his reply: cut cap and balance.... (he had the talking points down perfectly, didn't deviate at all)

so basically his notion of leadership is to do what grover norquist tells him too.... thank goodness obama isn't much good at that

Has anyone asked Romney where he stands on the fake debt ceiling crisis. Seems as though he's trying hard to fly under the radar. As a Presidential candidate, the publlic needs to know where he stands now, not after the fact.

Lobbyists get to him now while he's still cheap because once he gets the GOP nomination his price goes up dramatically.

While on the Republican side only one candidate does not get that support because he cannot be bought while getting the most support from soldiers because he is the only candidate that will bring them ALL home...

So Romney is getting into the pen with the wolves. These tactics of sucking up to the wealthy lobbyists and lawyers might raise money for his campaign but, what does it tell the American voter about the man? Bought and paid for like a cheap suit. For the power brokers, the little guy has no place, no voice, no hope, no job, no house and yet they have big plans for how they can somehow prolong the wars to make more money and get that black man out of the oval office. That's what the Repubs are all about. Sign a pledge to not raise taxes on their friends and more importantly, donors. The oil mafia, Wall Street and big corporations like GE and GM, spit on us, as we slide down into the gutter which is where they should reside. But if we don't elect them in the first place (by they, I mean rich lawyers with friends in high places), and instead vote for the cow farmer, the housewife; anybody with common sense who will go to Washington and speak for us. Or are they corrupted after getting to Washington? The atmosphere is poisoned there for anybody with a conscience, it's an aquarium filled with hungry sharks and, the weak are eaten alive. Romney will be picked over by the vultures and I don't feel a bit sorry for him.

Full Screen the Invitation -  Check out the names attending the
luncheon and  supporting Romney.
"Senator" Trent Lott   ----- apparently he's still wheeling
and dealing and has  kept his defunct title of "Senator."
It must be beneath him to use, the barely acceptable title, "Former" Senator.
For Trent, it is SENATOR.
Isn't it a crime to impersonate a Federal Official?

I hate it when pols keep their titles when they are no longer in Office.
IMO, when pols are Out of Office, they are back to Mr., Mrs. and/or Ms.

The Founding Papa's must have been at some gin joint getting drunk with their slaves' wives when they concocted this farce of a Government system.
