China Human Trafficking Ring Crackdown Saves 89 Infants

China Human Trafficking

First Posted: 07/27/11 10:30 AM ET Updated: 09/26/11 06:12 AM ET

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese police rescued 89 infants kidnapped for sale and arrested 369 people they said were linked to two human trafficking rings this month, state media reported Wednesday.

In the first case, the traffickers, who were mostly Vietnamese residents, abducted children from Vietnam and sold them in China's southern regions of Guangdong and Guangxi, the China Daily newspaper said, citing an unnamed officer from Guangdong's provincial department of public security.

In mid-July, police detained 39 suspects in connection with trafficking and rescued eight infants, aged 10 days to seven months, who had been drugged with sleeping pills, the newspaper said.

In another crackdown this month, police arrested 330 people suspected of involvement in the trafficking of baby girls, the newspaper said. The police operation took place across 14 provinces.

The 81 infants rescued were aged 10 days to four months and are now in the care of institutions, the report said.

Efforts by China, the world's most populous nation, to contain population growth through a strict "one child" policy, coupled with the country's long tradition of favoring boys, have contributed to the rise in cases of trafficking in children and women.

Women are sold to men in remote areas who are unable to find brides due to the sex imbalance resulting from China's one-child policy which has encouraged sex-selective abortions.

Police set up a special task force in February following the discovery of a child kidnap ring in the Guangxi region, the newspaper said. Another trafficking operation was broken up in the poor southwestern province of Yunnan this May.
The report said that police have uncovered 39,194 cases of human trafficking in China since April 2009, the majority of the cases involving women or children.

There's also trafficing of Vietnamese and Chinese women and children in the US. They're used in sweat shops and for prostitution.

Amidst such horrific, inhuman news is some solace that China suspended typical suppression of human rights reports to publicly reveal this. Could it portend rethinking their population control policies?
China's balance of 'market forces' and social behavior is emergent model of scrutiny for future. (from fortune cookie discards)

China "rethinks" it's population control policies every 5 years.

I am not convinced you know what it is, and more importantly who benifits. You woulf find it very interesting.

The article forgot to mention buying children and raising them as slaves. Put them to work in the factories as soon as they can walk. Give them a little rice and a little water every day and sell the junk they are forced to make to the USA........if any of them drop dead, buy some more. It is a business not unlike horse trading. Buy them in bulk cheap under a year old and get as much use as possible out of each one..the uglys work in factories, the prettys get pimped out.

This article does not state the reason(s) for the kidnapping of the children. Were they being offered for adoption? Were they being sold as sex slaves? And, were they actually kidnapped, or did the parents sell them because they were girls? Finally, if they WERE kidnapped, why aren't they being returned to their parents rather than put in "institutions"?

I hate articles that give you a few facts and then launch into the writer's personal politics, leaving numerous questions that are essential to the story, just hanging out there.
03:35 PM on 07/27/2011
reread the article.. they were kidnapped by being drugged and most likely sold into slavery of some sort! and this sort of thing is nothing new. plus its going to get worse since they only want ppl to have one child and want boys not girls..
04:55 PM on 07/27/2011
"slavery" doesn't explain the infants. Are those infants meant for sexual abuse? They aren't old enough to provide wives for men who can't find women, so this article leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

THIS is where GE (bailed out with OUR TAX DOLLARS) is taking TWO BILLION DOLLARS to build factories, thus taking jobs out of Wisconsin. To China. For revenge on the anti-union Wisconsin government. Bye bye USA, bye bye good sense, bye bye freedom...it was pretty nice while it lasted.

They may be soon if the U.S. defaults on its debts since China owns a good part of the national debt.

Nope Myoho.. to the front.. they shoot you while looking at your executioner. Although with the organ trade going so nicely the poison needle and body harvest vans make rounds in villages to collect prisoners that are to be killed and euthenize them and harvest their organs right on the spot. Talk about recycling.

I know it's not a solution but maybe if it were made easier to legally adopt these children the problem would not be so great.
08:15 PM on 07/27/2011
You have a point. But also consider "traditional" values. People don't like adoption mostly because they want to pass off children as their own, for issues of honor and family name.

How do they go from CHILD abductions rings to men buying wives?
Are the "reporters" trying to say that 4 month olds are being sold as wives?
Reuters is pathetic.

I fear it is you who needs to start thinhking...

The story is that 81 children, none older than 4 were saved from abduction rings.
Such rings exist all through out Asia and Europe.
Any speculative commentary about WHY the Chinese become child abductors is political, speculative and does not belong in the NEWS story.
I prefer to think for myself, Reuters can keep their opinions to themselves.
10:13 PM on 07/27/2011
maybe they are being kidnapped to be organ donors

Could be, that is a big problem.
Sex slaves and prostitutes in Thailand or sold to adoption agencies from any number of places around the world.
I don't know, and neither do you nor Reuters and that's my point.
That we can all take pretty good guesses is beyond the point.

Keep your bias against "tea party people" off of this post. You are no better than the "tea party" people you despise, especially with your misspelled words and punctuation. This article has absolutely nothing to do with it. Female trafficking and gendercide (my term to describe gender-related murder) is a serious issue in Asia.

China's one child policy is brilliant I see what it's really for, they claim china will have 20-30 million more males then Females, military experts claim China will get at least 10 million of the males who have no wives to join the military to secure China's resources, to expand it's dominance and power across the world.

Actually, China's one child policy applies to han Chinese to insure ethnic groups increase. It also insures that all couples have a right to have offspring regardless of income.
08:19 PM on 07/27/2011
China's one child policy has caused the country more problems than they ever wanted. The Chinese government is actually threatened by the high percentage of males, young and single, who can easily become insurgents against the government.

I'd like to bring up the REAL cultural reasons for the preference of males in Asia. It is due to the fact that men never take care of the elderly. When a man marries, his bride is instantly obligated to care for her in-laws once they are in need of care. She is not allowed to care for her own parents. So, if you have a baby girl, you know she will not be able to care for you when you are old and infirm. You can only hope for a son, who will in turn marry a woman who will care you.

Also, there is the dowry attached to females, which is a manufactured social prop to further advance the idea that females are a burden and males are most desirable. Since it is taboo to examine the true selfish reasons for wanting a male child, cultural bias covers it up at the expense of females by devaluing them while simultaneously overvaluing males.

Stealing female children has been going on for some time now. Many young men are without the prospect of getting married. Women have traditionally done the work that men have refused to do, so they are absconding with females from poorer villages, etc.

Last, the inheritance laws still favor males in many areas of Asia. Who wouldn't want a male child if their daughter couldn't inherit and was basically treated like a slave? Hence, the bias and sad lives of unwanted, abused females in Asia.

This is nonsense. It's the boy's job to take care of his parents. His wife is also committed to take care of his parents. That's why the one-child policy cut so deeply among the poor, because having a boy is the impoverished Asian (not just Chinese) version of Social Security.

Sweeping statements like "men never take care of the elderly are bigoted, sexist, and wrong, and indicate a very shallow understanding of the Chinese/Southeast Asian problem with girl babies.

Let me get this right. This is a country we give millions in aid to. This is a country that we allow to send their junk here to sell without taxes that kills American jobs, and this is the same country that many of our large corporation move operations to avoid taxes and government regulations. Wow is this world screwed up. I liked China better thirty years ago when we refused to trade with them and they were poor.
