New Zealand Goldfish Survive 134 Days Without Food

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- There were no Scooby snacks to eat – but at least they had each other for company.

Two goldfish, named Shaggy and Daphne after characters from the animated television show Scooby Doo, have become the smallest and hardiest survivors of the devastating February earthquake in Christchurch that killed 181 people.

The fish spent four and a half months – 134 days – trapped in their tank in the city's off-limits downtown without anyone to feed them or even any electricity to power their tank filter before they were discovered this month and rescued.

"It's certainly an incredible story. I wouldn't have guessed that fish could survive on their own for four months," said Paul Clarkson, curator at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. "Goldfish are very hardy critters."

So how did they do it?

Luckily for the fish, they lived in a large 26-gallon (100-liter) tank. They had weed to munch through. And, according to Clarkson, the fish may have gleaned some nutrition from eating algae growing on the tank's rocks and walls. He said naturally growing bacteria may have helped keep the water clean enough to sustain life.

Then there's the delicate question of their missing companions. There were six goldfish in the tank when the earthquake struck. By the time the survivors were found, no trace remained of three of the fish. A fourth was found floating in the tank. Goldfish are, after all, omnivores.

The fish had been on display in the reception area of Quantum Chartered Accountants in Christchurch's High Street. Company director Vicky Thornley said she was about to step into the elevator when the quake hit and she grabbed onto the wooden tank surround, both to steady herself and stop the tank from falling.

"I was clinging on for dear life," she said. Some of the water slopped over her.

She and her three co-workers made it out of the building as masonry and bricks crashed through a skylight. Thornley's first thoughts were for the safety of her 5-year-old son, Joshua, who was unharmed.

It wasn't until July 6 that authorities finally allowed her back into the office, escorting her for an hour to collect belongings. Her office was in a particularly hard-hit part of the inner-city.

Thornley said she didn't want to look in the direction of the tank because she was sure the fish would be long dead. But then an earthquake-recovery worker shouted to her: "Hey, there are fish here, and they're alive!"

"I was astounded," Thornley said.

The fish looked dull in color but otherwise appeared fine, Thornley said. She scooped them out and took them home in a bucket. She gave them to Joshua, who loves goldfish and already had two of his own, Scooby and Fred. It was Joshua who then named the survivors.

Thornley said she was nervous about putting Shaggy and Daphne in with her son's fish, given that they may already have developed a taste for their own kind. But nothing happened, she said, and all four are now swimming happily together in a new tank.

Although none survived as long as Shaggy and Daphne, hundreds of pets were rescued within the first two weeks of the quake. Carolyn Press McKenzie, who runs the Huha animal sanctuary in Wellington, said she has since found homes for most of the 115 dogs, cats, roosters and turtles she helped rescue from Christchurch.

"Well, like, look man, Look, Daphne and I were talking...and, like, it looks like we're gonna have to eat you dude..We've been stuck here without food for like 3 months now and its about time you did something useful. I mean, I know we get the munchies but like you've been eating most of the fish flakes, so it only makes sense that we munch on yooouuu."

A 26 gallon tank is not a large tank. It's barely large enough for two goldfish and certainly not large enough for six. As a rule of thumb, there should be at least fifteen gallons of water for each fancy goldfish (oranda, lionhead, pearlscale, veil-tail, telescope, etc.), more for a comet. This doesn't mean that one goldfish can be kept in a fifteen gallon tank. A tank that size lacks the floor space for a goldfish to grow properly and thrive.

When properly cared for, goldfish can live for fifteen or twenty years. They are also fairly intelligent for fish that can be trained to do complex tricks for treats.

As a kid I had a goldfish that was impossible to kill. His name was Henry and he would kill and eat every single other goldfish I put in the tank with him. I thought he would have liked the company but apparently he liked the life of a hermit. Eventually I gave him to my friend who put him in a pond and he lived there for another 10 years and grew to the size of a small dog. RIP Henry!

Henry seems like quite a fish!

That's amazing! Fish are so resilient. I had a goldfish once that turned white. It had something to do with the fact that we left it in the dark for 2 weeks while on vacation.Does anyone else find it kind of funny that goldfish will either die a soon as you get them OR live forever?

No, I don't find it funny. I find the level of care given to aquarium fish generally predicts their life span.

My little brother's goldfish were like that - one died weeks after he got it, and the other lived for years. Funny little creatures.
